Visit the Vatican

By Updated 12 min read

Visit the Vatican by choosing between the museums with the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and its dome, then booking a time slot for whichever needs a ticket. The Vatican Museums charge 20 euros for a full ticket without online booking, while the basilica is described as free to enter but with security checks.

Visit the Vatican and you enter the smallest country in the world, a walled state inside Rome that holds one of the largest art collections and one of the largest churches. Most trips combine the museums and the Sistine Chapel with St. Peter’s Basilica, and some add the dome. The rules, tickets and queues differ at each stop, so a little planning changes the whole day.

I sort these choices by what visitors ask most often. This is an independent guide, not a ticket office. Prices and rules come from the official pages I link, and tour details come from partner listings on GetYourGuide. Figures are the latest published as of November 2026, so confirm them before you pay.

Can You Visit the Vatican Without a Ticket?

Visiting the Vatican without a ticket works for some places in Vatican City, but the museums and the Sistine Chapel need one. A partner listing calls entry to St. Peter’s Basilica free of charge, adding that access is not guaranteed and may vary because of crowd control. Extras such as the dome are separate.

The Sistine Chapel is part of the museum route, so you cannot visit it separately. The Vatican Museums’ prices and tickets page says the entry ticket covers the museums and the chapel only on the day it is issued, and that tickets cannot be refunded.

Everyone passes through security. A reviewer of the basilica wrote that they arrived at 6:45 am, found a line already but got in quickly, and that the free visit takes around 40 minutes if you only want the main hall.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

What Are the Top Attractions When You Visit the Vatican?

The top attractions to see when you visit the Vatican are the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Wikipedia names St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums among the sites that make Vatican City a World Heritage Site.

At the museums, the Inside Out Italy listing says you can see over 20,000 works of art by painters like Michelangelo and Raphael, and names The Creation of Adam as a highlight in the chapel. Other listings mention Michelangelo’s Last Judgment, the Pieta and Bernini’s Baldachin at the basilica.

The state is tiny, with an area of 0.49 square kilometers, according to Wikipedia, so walking between the sights is realistic. Maps data lists the museums as open from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday, and the basilica as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm.

How Much Does It Cost to Visit the Vatican?

The cost to visit the Vatican for a full Vatican Museums ticket is 20 euros without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. A reduced ticket costs 10 euros, about $11. Booking a “Skip the Line” slot on the official site adds 5 euros (about $5.58) to the reduced ticket and 2 euros (about $2.23) to the schools ticket. The table shows the official figures from the museums’ price page.

Ticket Price without online booking With “Skip the Line” booking
Full entry ticket 20 euros (about $22) Booking fee applies; see the official portal
Reduced entry ticket 10 euros (about $11) 10 euros plus 5 euros (about $11 plus $5.58)
Reduced ticket for students 10 euros (about $11) 10 euros plus 5 euros (about $11 plus $5.58)
Reduced ticket for schools 5 euros (about $5.58) 5 euros plus 2 euros (about $5.58 plus $2.23)
Castel Gandolfo Papal Palace and Secret Garden 12 euros (about $13.40, full ticket) Not listed

The museums state that the only official site for online tickets is tickets.museivaticani.va, and they warn about look-alike sites that may charge significantly higher prices. To compare your options before you pay, my guide to how to visit the Vatican explains the steps in order.

Who Can Visit the Vatican for Free?

Free Vatican entry to the museums is offered on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the museums’ opening and closing calendar. It also covers children below the age of 7 and to visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67 percent, plus a companion if the visitor is not self-sufficient.

Free tickets for disabled visitors and their companions cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, and the visitor and companion receive priority skip-the-line entry. Directors of museum institutions and certain heritage bodies also qualify, according to the page.

Be careful with reduced tickets. Anyone who buys one without entitlement has to buy a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket is cancelled. The Sunday question gets its own page: my guide on visiting on a Sunday explains how the free day and the closed days fit together.

Can Anyone Visit the Vatican?

Anyone can visit the Vatican, since the museums and the basilica are open to the public, and the rules mostly concern clothing, bags and behavior. The Vatican Museums say entry to the museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors.

Pets are not allowed in the museums, even small ones, except guide dogs for blind or partially sighted visitors, equipped with a muzzle and lead, and animals for certified pet therapy. Luggage, rucksacks and packages that staff consider unsuitable must be left in the cloakroom, which is free of charge.

My page on whether anyone can visit the Vatican goes through who may enter, and I cover the question for Vatican City separately.

What Should You Wear to Visit the Vatican?

What to wear to visit the Vatican is clothing that covers shoulders and knees. The visitor advice page says sleeveless and low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted. It also extends the idea of decorum to visible personal objects and distinctive personal signs, such as tattoos, that may offend Catholic morality, the Catholic religion and common decency.

Jeans are not mentioned by name, so full-length trousers that cover the knee fit the rules as written. Bring a light layer for the chapel and the basilica rather than relying on borrowing one at the door.

Knives, scissors and metal tools must be stored in the cloakroom. If you plan to continue to the basilica, the museums remind visitors not to leave baggage in the museum cloakroom.

How Do You Visit the Dome of St. Peter’s?

Visiting the dome of St. Peter’s is booked through the basilica, and the ticket includes entry to the basilica itself. The basilica’s dome page offers two versions, one with a lift to the terrace level and one with stairs to the terrace level. Both include a visit to the inner ring and outer ring of the dome and a digital audio guide for the basilica.

The basilica entry time is scheduled either one hour before or one hour after your dome visit time, depending on the expected visitor flow, so check the slot in your email. Partner tour listings also offer dome access. The Touriks listing, at $60.17 for 105 minutes, includes dome entry by stairs and entry to the basilica, and it excludes the Vatican Museums.

The Crown Tours listing offers pre-reserved dome access with an elevator to the basilica terrace on select options. If you want the dome, read the option names carefully, because the lift and stair versions differ.

Visiting the Vatican by the Numbers

Visiting the Vatican by the numbers comes down to a few planning figures, taken from Wikidata’s Vatican City entry. I added what each one means for you.

  • Area: 0.44 km², so the sights are close together and you can cross the state on foot.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, the date of the Lateran Treaty that created the modern state.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which explains the strict rules that protect the collections.
  • Population: 949 (2024), so almost everyone you meet inside is a visitor.
  • Currency: euro, so you pay in euros and I convert to dollars above.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin, though you will find English signs at the main sights.

How Long Does It Take to Visit the Vatican?

A visit to the Vatican takes about a half day for the museums and the chapel, plus extra time for the basilica. Guided tours in the partner listings run from about 1 hour 45 minutes for a basilica and dome tour to 2 to 4 hours for museums tours. The self-guided entry ticket lets you stay as long as you like until closing.

The museums provide places to rest along the route. The visitor advice page lists relaxation areas with seats in the Courtyard of the Cuirasses, the Courtyard of the Pinacoteca, the Square Garden and the Courtyard of the Pinecone, which helps if you are visiting with children or older relatives.

A visitor to the museums wrote that they turned up near 17:00, waited 30 to 40 minutes to buy tickets and had to rush the galleries before closing. That is a good reason to start earlier than you think you need to.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

What Is the Best Way to Visit the Vatican?

The best way to visit the Vatican depends on your priorities. Book a timed entry ticket if you want to explore alone, a guided tour if you want explanation, and a combined tour if you want the basilica on the same morning. Compare group size, meeting point and extras, not only the price.

The partner listings show the range. The Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket was listed at $36.21, the Inside Out Italy ticket at $53.48 with a host who escorts you to the entrance, the Brastours small-group tour at $55.15, the Enjoy Rome tour at $60.17 and the Crown Tours listing at $71.31. All are in US dollars as listed when I checked them.

One traveler who could not take a guided tour because their child used a wheelchair did the visit on their own with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights. For people comparing formats, my page on Vatican City visit tickets lays out the ticket side.

How Do Travelers Rate a Visit to the Vatican?

Traveler ratings for a Vatican visit are strong. Maps data gives the Vatican Museums 4.6, the Sistine Chapel 4.7 and St. Peter’s Basilica 4.8 out of 5. The partner tickets and tours score between 4.27 and 4.65, with the entry ticket at 4.48 from about 160,000 reviews and the Crown Tours listing at 4.65 from about 19,500.

Reviewers praise the collections, the saved time at the entrance and knowledgeable guides. The recurring suggestion is for clearer directions to the correct queue and the right arrival time. My advice is to read the meeting-point text on your voucher the day before, and to screenshot it in case your phone loses signal.

If you are weighing a guide against a plain ticket, remember that the cheapest tickets here exclude a guide, while the Brastours and Crown Tours listings include one and add official headsets or audio for the group.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Vatican?

The best time to visit the Vatican is a weekday morning, because the museums are closed on Sundays except the free last Sunday. Maps data shows the museums open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, so an early slot gives you the most time inside. The basilica opens at 7 am daily, so it works for an early start.

Avoid arriving late in the day. One partner listing warns that its ticket is valid only for the reserved time and that latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line entry. The same rule runs through the partner tours: be on time.

A useful order is the basilica when it opens, then the museums later, or the reverse if your ticket has a morning slot. Keep your voucher on your phone and note where you collect it.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Practical tips before you go start with lost items, which you should report at the nearest security point. If you have already left the museums, the visitor advice page says you can ask for help by email, and unclaimed items are kept at the Vatican Gendarmerie at the end of the day. The museums say they cannot be held responsible for loss of personal belongings.

For a first trip, keep the plan simple and write down your meeting point. Read the inclusions on any ticket you buy, since some exclude a guide, the dome or the basilica.

My Visiting the Vatican hub collects practical guides, and the wider Vatican Rome page covers how the state fits into a trip to the city. When you visit the Vatican, aim for an early start, modest clothing and one clear priority.
