How long is Vatican City?

By Updated 13 min read

How long is Vatican City? It covers only about 0.49 square kilometers, so you can cross it quickly on foot, but the museums, the Basilica and the dome together fill a whole day. Plan your time around the sights and entry slots, not the distance.

How long is Vatican City? On paper, not very: the state covers about 0.49 square kilometers, a small enclave inside the city of Rome. In practice, a visit takes much longer than the map suggests, because the time goes into security lines, timed entries and miles of galleries rather than into walking between borders.

I get this question a lot in different forms. Some people want the size of the country. Others want to know how long to plan for a visit. This guide answers both, keeps the numbers tied to official sources, and tells you where I would not trust a figure that nobody has measured.

How Long Is Vatican City in Size?

Vatican City’s size comes to roughly 0.49 square kilometers (0.19 square miles), per Wikipedia’s entry on the state. That ranks it as both the smallest country by area and the least populous. Wikidata lists a slightly lower area of 0.44 square kilometers, so you will see both figures online.

I have not found a single measured length for the state in the official pages I rely on, so I will not give you a kilometer figure for how long it is from end to end. Area is the number the sources agree on, and it is the one worth using. Picture a small walled neighborhood, not a long strip.

It is a landlocked enclave within Rome, and the pope rules it. Most of what visitors want sits in one corner of it: St. Peter’s Square, the Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the museums.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City’s key numbers show you the scale at a glance. Each one comes from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². Wikidata’s figure is a little under the 0.49 km² in Wikipedia’s text. For you, it means the whole state fits many times over inside a large city park.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Very few people live here, so the crowds you see are visitors, not residents.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. The modern state dates from the Lateran Treaty of that year, so it is younger than most of the buildings in it.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The whole state is protected, which is why rules about dress and bags are enforced.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros, and I give dollar equivalents later in this guide.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and official pages come in Italian first, with English on the main visitor sites.

Wikipedia’s text also puts the population at about 882, which shows how often these small numbers change. Treat all population figures as approximate.

Why a Tiny Country Takes So Long to Visit

A tiny country can still eat up half a day, since distance is not the issue. The issue is that you pass through several separate systems: St. Peter’s Square security, the Basilica, the Vatican Museums with their own entrance, and optional extras like the dome.

Each system has its own line and its own rules. The Basilica and the dome are reached from St. Peter’s Square, while the museums are entered from Viale Vaticano. Your day is the sum of those parts plus the walks between them.

Here is how I think about it. The state is a few minutes’ walk across in any direction you need, but I have never found a way to see the museums in a few minutes. Their galleries are what take the time, and a rushed plan is the most common mistake I see.

How Long Does a Vatican City Visit Take?

A Vatican City visit takes a full day for most people who want both the museums and the Basilica, although the exact length depends on what you add. I would not trust any single number from a forum, so here are the durations that come from official pages and tour listings.

Sight Time to plan Source
St. Peter’s Dome About 1 hour on average Basilica FAQ
St. Peter’s Basilica (free visit) One reviewer said most of it can be seen in 40 minutes Traveler review below
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, guided 2.5 to 3 hours Tour listings below
Vatican Museums, self-guided entry ticket Your own pace, listed as 1 day Tour listings below
Scavi (Necropolis) Book separately, with its own fixed hours Scavi office

The official Basilica page says the dome visit lasts about an hour on average, depending on how fast you climb and how long you stay at the top. The lift only goes up to the terrace level, and from the inner ring you climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring.

For the Basilica itself, one Google Maps reviewer wrote that if you only make the free visit, you can see most of it in 40 minutes.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

That is a traveler’s estimate, not an official figure, so treat it as a floor. If you want to read the art slowly, you will stay longer.

A realistic one-day order

A realistic one-day order is simple, in my view. Begin with the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel while you are fresh, because the galleries are long and the stairs add up. Take a break for lunch outside the walls. Then finish with the Basilica and, if you booked it, the dome.

If you want the full planning view, my guide to how long the Vatican Museums take goes gallery by gallery. I keep that detail there so this page can stay focused on the size of the state and the overall day.

How Long Does It Take to Get Into the Vatican?

Getting into the Vatican takes as long as your ticket type allows. With a timed, skip-the-line ticket you go straight to the security check at your slot, while a walk-up buyer can wait a long time. One Google Maps reviewer who showed up around 17:00 without a ticket waited 30 to 40 minutes to buy one, then rushed the galleries before closing.

That is one traveler’s experience, not a rule, but it matches my advice. Book ahead and arrive inside your slot. One tour listing says plainly not to arrive outside your assigned time slot, and another says late arrival means no entry and no refund.

Security checks apply to everyone. The Basilica’s own FAQ says visitors with a dome ticket must pass through the security checks in St. Peter’s Square, and that those checks remain mandatory for all visitors.

If you want the step-by-step version, I explain getting inside the Vatican in a separate guide. Another page covers the Vatican tickets online you can compare before you pick a time.

Vatican Museums Opening Hours and Your Time Budget

Vatican Museums opening hours matter most, because the museums are where your time goes, so check them before you plan the day. According to the Google Maps listing, the Vatican Museums are open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday. The Sistine Chapel shows the same hours. Hours change with the calendar, so confirm them on the official Vatican Museums site before you book.

St. Peter’s Basilica is listed as open daily, 7 am to 7:10 pm, per the same Maps data. That means Sunday is a Basilica day, not a museums day, and I would plan around that.

Those hours matter when you choose a day. If you land on a Sunday, the museums are closed, so the Basilica and the square are what you will see. The Scavi office runs on its own schedule: its page lists Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 14:00.

How Far Is It to the Vatican From Central Rome?

The Vatican from central Rome lies on the west bank of the Tiber, in the city’s northwest, and Metro Line A serves it. Get off at Ottaviano - Musei Vaticani for the museums. One operator describes the walk from Ottaviano to its meeting point on Via Vespasiano as about 10 minutes.

I cover the routes in detail elsewhere. If you are asking how do you get to the Vatican from Rome?, start there, and the page on getting to Vatican City covers the other approaches.

The point for this guide is simple. The trip to the border is a transit ride, the walk to the entrance is short, and none of this is where your time goes.

A Short History of the Ground You Are Walking On

The history of this ground is long even though the state is small. The official Vatican City State history page says the word Vatican once described a swampy area on the right bank of the Tiber, between Ponte Milvio and today’s Ponte Sisto. In the Roman era, villas and a vast necropolis grew up there.

The same page explains that Constantine began a large church over the tomb of Saint Peter around 324 A.D., and that Leo IV (847-855) built the first walls of the civitas, known as the Leonine walls. The modern state then arrived with the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929, as Wikipedia records.

Why does that help with your timing? Because most of what you will walk past is old, and a lot of it is explained by signs and audio guides. If you like history, give yourself more time. If you only want the headline sights, you can move faster.

For a longer look at how the state and the city fit together, see my pillar guide to the Vatican and Rome.

Can You See the Necropolis, Dome and Gardens in One Day?

Seeing the necropolis, dome and gardens in a single day is usually not realistic. The dome needs its own booking and about an hour. The Scavi excavations need a separate reservation. Each of these has its own timing, so adding them stretches the day quickly.

The Scavi ticket costs EUR 13, about $14.51 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06, and the office says no reductions are given for any reason. Check the Scavi office page for current prices and how to reserve.

The dome ticket bought online includes entry to St. Peter’s Basilica, to be done 90 minutes before your dome time, plus the digital audio guide. That is useful planning information, because it tells you the Basilica and the dome belong in one block of time, not two separate trips.

Here is my rule. Pick one major add-on per day. The dome or the Scavi, not both, unless you are staying several days.

Vatican Museums Entry Tickets Explained

Vatican Museums entry tickets decide how smooth a museums-centered day feels. A basic entry ticket gets you in at a set time and lets you explore alone. A guided option adds a licensed guide, which changes the pace.

The four options below show the range. The first is a self-guided entry ticket. The 2.5 to 3 hour listing includes a professional licensed guide, headsets and priority entry to the museums. Another is a hosted entrance with a short orientation, and the breakfast option gets you early access before the main crowds.

I would pick by how you like to travel. If you want to wander at your own speed, the self-guided entry ticket works. If you want the story explained, I would book the guided one. Prices change, so check the listing for today’s rate before booking.

One traveler on the guided tour wrote this:

“Do not visit the Vatican without a tour guide and skip the line tickets. The Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel are wall to wall people. Lots of stairs . Our museum guide was excellent, knowledgeable and a good sense of humour. Escorted by tour company rep to official guide meeting point with skip the line tickets. Always get your tickets in advance to avoid horrendous lines!”

What to Know Before You Walk In

Entry rules at the Vatican affect your timing and can cost you minutes at the door. The Basilica’s FAQ states that clothing appropriate for a place of worship is required, with shoulders and knees covered. It also says only small personal bags are allowed, with no cloakroom or luggage storage for the dome.

If a guard turns you away for clothing or a large bag, you lose your slot. I would pack light and dress for a church before you leave the hotel.

If you booked the dome online, you receive QR codes by email. The official page says to show them at the entrance to the Basilica and the dome, on a device or in print. If you do not receive them within 30 minutes of booking, write to the address given there.

Plan the rest of your day with these in mind. For a broader checklist, the guide on how to visit the Vatican covers what to bring, and a separate page explains how to tour the Vatican with a guide.

Where to Eat Between Sights

Places to eat near the Vatican matter because a visit runs for hours and you will want a break. The Maps data lists Ristorante Pizzeria Castello, a pizza restaurant on Via delle Fornaci in Rome, open 11 am to 11 pm daily and rated 4.7 from over 18,000 reviews. It is outside the Vatican walls, so build the walk into your timing.

I would eat between the museums and the Basilica, not before the museums. That way you do the long, tiring part first and finish with the Basilica, which has a more flexible pace.

Planning Your Day: A Practical Wrap-Up

How long Vatican City takes to see is most of a day, even though the state is tiny at about 0.49 square kilometers. The distance is short, while the hours go on entry, security, and the collections themselves.

Here is the plan I would follow. Book a timed museums ticket in advance, arrive inside your slot, and keep the Basilica for the afternoon. Add the dome only if you have the energy for 320 more steps after the lift. Confirm hours and prices on the official sites before you go.

If you want a guide to explain what you see, the tours above are the quickest way to lock in a slot. I would book early, since popular times fill up.

Frequently asked questions

How much area does Vatican City have?

Wikipedia gives Vatican City an area of 0.49 square kilometers (0.19 square miles). Wikidata lists a slightly lower figure of 0.44 square kilometers, so sources round the borders a little differently. Either way, it is the smallest country in the world by area.

How long does it take to walk across the entire Vatican City?

My sources give the area but no measured walking time, so I won't quote a number. What I can say is that the walk between the Basilica and the Vatican Museums entrance is short, and the real time goes on security checks, queues and the galleries. Plan your day around entry slots instead of distance.

How long does it take to get into the Vatican?

It depends on whether you hold a timed ticket. Travelers who book skip-the-line entry are told to arrive for their assigned slot, while one Google Maps reviewer who bought tickets on the day waited 30 to 40 minutes. Everyone passes a security check, including at St. Peter's Square before the dome.

How far is it to the Vatican?

From central Rome you reach it by Metro Line A to Ottaviano - Musei Vaticani. One tour operator describes the walk from Ottaviano to its meeting point on Via Vespasiano as about 10 minutes. The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano.
