Vatican Museum Entrance Fee

By Updated 11 min read

The Vatican Museum entrance fee is paid per person for a dated, timed ticket, and the current base amount is published on the official Vatican Museums ticket site. Skip-the-line tickets from resellers start around $36 per person for entry only and reach about $128 for a small-group guided tour.

The Vatican Museum entrance fee is the price of a dated, timed ticket for one person, and it is the number visitors ask me about most. I leave the base figure off this page on purpose, because it is the one amount that changes, and the official ticket page is the only place I trust for it. What I can give you is everything around it: the free day, what each ticket type adds, real prices from booking platforms, and the dates when you cannot get in at all.

My advice is simple. Decide first whether you want entry only or a guide, then pick a day, then book the slot. Money is rarely the hard part. A sold-out slot or a closed day is.

What Is the Vatican Museum Entrance Fee Today?

The Vatican Museum entrance fee is charged per person, with the base ticket sold directly by the museums through their official site. Skip-the-line versions from resellers cost more since they bundle in timed entry, a host, an audio guide or a guide.

Here is how the options compare. Euro amounts come from the official pages, and dollar amounts come from the booking platform listings I reviewed in November 2026.

Ticket option Price What it gives you
Last Sunday of the month Free Entry 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., final entry 12:30 p.m.
Entry ticket with a dedicated entrance $36.21 Skip-the-ticket-line entry, booking fee included
Skip-the-line ticket with a host $40.11 Host escort to the entrance, optional upgrades
Skip-the-line ticket with arrival help $53.48 Host at an office near the museums, Sistine Chapel access
Tour with an official Vatican guide $52.37 Entry ticket plus a guided visit
Guided tour with St. Peter’s Basilica $76.88 Guide, headsets, Basilica access on most days
Small-group tour with fast-track Basilica entry $128.14 Expert guide, small group, Raphael Rooms
Scavi excavations ticket (separate site) EUR 13, about $14.51 Guided visit under St. Peter’s, no reductions

The dollar figure for the Scavi ticket uses the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on 2026-11-06. The Scavi Office states that no reductions in price will be given for any reason.

Prices and slots change daily, so treat my table as a map, not a quote. Confirm the live amount on the platform before you pay.

Is There a Free Day at the Vatican Museums?

The free day at the Vatican Museums falls on the last Sunday of every month, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m. The official hours page lists the exceptions: the free Sunday does not apply when it falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.

This is the only way to avoid the Vatican Museum entrance fee entirely. It has a catch. The Sunday opening is short, and the museums say visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. Guided tours are possible on that day by reservation on the official site.

I would use the free Sunday only if your schedule is flexible and you are comfortable with a shorter, tighter visit. If the Sistine Chapel is the whole point of your trip, a weekday slot gives you far more room.

Vatican Museums Admission Cost Explained: What Your Ticket Includes

Vatican Museums admission cost covers entry to the museum complex, and the Sistine Chapel sits on the route. Wikipedia notes that the chapel is the last room visited and that there are 24 galleries in total. One ticket therefore gets you the whole visit, with the chapel at the end.

What the base ticket does not cover is a guide, and that is where reseller prices split. Here is what the products I reviewed add or leave out:

  • Booking fee: the entry-only ticket lists it as included, so the price you see should be the price you pay.
  • Audio guide: included only if you select that option on the entry-only ticket.
  • Guide and headsets: included on the guided tours, with groups of 10 or 20 on one of them.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica: included on some guided tours, with limits. One tour notes it is not accessible on Wednesday mornings.
  • Dome climb: excluded everywhere I checked, and one operator says it needs a separate ticket bought on site if available.

I cannot say what the official base ticket includes beyond the route itself, so read the ticket page before you buy. The point to remember is that “entrance fee” means the right to walk in. It does not mean someone explains what you are looking at.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get In?

The cheapest way in is the free last Sunday of the month. On any other day, the lowest price in my review was $36.21 for an entry ticket through a dedicated entrance, followed by $40.11.

For most people, I would book one of the entry-only tickets and skip the guided tour unless art history is the reason you are going. The Vatican Museum entrance fee is the same cost whether you wander or follow a guide, so a guide is a separate decision about how much you want explained.

If you want a soft starting point, the tours below are the entry-only options I compared. You can also see every ticket type side by side on the main guide if you are still choosing.

One traveler summed up the value of the simplest option well:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”

Which Ticket Is Worth the Extra Money?

The ticket worth the extra money is a guided tour if you want the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms and the Basilica explained in one go. An entry-only ticket does the job if you would rather set your own pace.

The guided products I reviewed ranged from $52.37 to $128.14. The cheaper one uses an official Vatican guide and covers the museums. The $76.88 option adds the Basilica and gives you a choice of 10 or 20 people. The $128.14 small-group tour has the highest rating in the set at 4.64 from 3,715 reviews, and it includes a fast-track Basilica entrance that is not guaranteed for bookings made less than 72 hours ahead.

My rule of thumb: pay for a guide if this is your first visit and you have only one morning. Skip it if you have already seen the collections or you travel with young children who will not stand in a group.

Note the weak points too. Travelers on the guided tours mention uncomfortable headsets, and some entry-only buyers want clearer directions to the right queue. Read your meeting instructions twice. If you also want the Vatican’s rarest private access, VIP entrance tickets for the Vatican Museums are covered on their own page.

When Can You Enter, and Which Days Are Closed?

Vatican Museums opening hours run Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. The museums stay shut on Sundays apart from the free last Sunday, and visitors must be out of the halls 30 minutes before closing.

The official hours page also lists fixed closures. Before you book, check these dates:

  • 1 and 6 January
  • 11 February
  • 19 March
  • 6 April
  • 1 May
  • 29 June
  • 14 and 15 August
  • 1 November
  • 8, 25 and 26 December

The museums also publish temporary closures. As of the page I reviewed, all sectors are closed from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on 10 November, and the Sistine Chapel closes at 6:00 p.m. on 4 and 18 December. The Castel Gandolfo complex closes on the afternoon of 7 December. The official site also links a museum openings and closures calendar for 2026 to 2027, which is the document I would check last, right before you pay.

Last entry matters more than people think. If you arrive near 6:00 p.m., you will be pushed through the galleries to reach the Sistine Chapel before the halls clear.

Can You Buy Tickets at the Door?

Buying tickets at the door is something some visitors attempt, but I would not build a trip around it. One traveler who showed up at about 5:00 p.m. reported a 30 to 40 minute wait for tickets and then had to rush through the galleries before closing.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That account matches the schedule. With final entry at 6:00 p.m. and a 30-minute clearing time before 8:00 p.m. closing, a late arrival leaves you very little time. I cannot confirm what the box office will sell on any given day, so check the official ticket site first and book ahead.

If you do want to arrive without a ticket, go early on a weekday and expect a line. Another traveler suggested arriving 30 minutes before opening to avoid big queues. That is one person’s tip, but it fits how the entrance works.

Where Do You Pay and Enter?

The Vatican Museums entrance is the gate on Viale Vaticano, and the entrance guide shows the route in detail. The nearest Metro stop is Ottaviano-San Pietro-Musei Vaticani on Line A, which Wikipedia places in the Prati district.

On the entry-only tickets I reviewed, you show your ticket to the guards, pass security, then scan it at the box office desk marked for online tickets and groups. Some tickets use a meeting point instead: one office on Via Sebastiano Veniero, one flower stand at Via Giulio Cesare and Via Leone IV, and one set of steps near Caffè Vaticano on the corner of Viale Vaticano and Via Tunisi.

Check which of these applies to your booking before you leave your hotel. Arriving at the wrong place is the most common way people lose a timed slot.

Do the Vatican Gardens and the Scavi Cost Extra?

The Vatican Gardens and Scavi cost extra: the Scavi excavations are a separate ticket at EUR 13, which is about $14.51 at the ECB rate above, and the price includes the contribution for the guide. Monday to Friday the Scavi office runs 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., according to its official page.

The Gardens are also a different product. One operator offers a Vatican Gardens minibus tour as an optional add-on to its skip-the-line ticket. For pricing and booking rules, see the page on the Vatican Gardens.

I would not try to squeeze the Scavi into the same morning as the museums. They have different offices, different hours and different booking systems.

Vatican Museums by the Numbers

Vatican Museums by the numbers gives the price some context. Each figure comes from Wikidata unless noted.

  • Visitors per year: 1,612,530 in 2021, a pandemic-era figure. Wikipedia says the museums were visited by 6.8 million people in 2024, which is why timed slots matter.
  • Founded: 1506, when the museums grew from a single sculpture, Laocoon and His Sons.
  • Opened to the public: 1771, per the same Wikidata entry.
  • Size: about 70,000 works, 20,000 of them on display, according to Wikipedia.
  • Galleries: 24 in total, with the Sistine Chapel last.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km², which explains why every visitor funnels through one gate.
  • Currency: the euro, so no exchange tricks at the gate.

The visitor number is the one I would remember. A museum this busy sells timed entry for a reason, and an hour of delay on your ticket can cost you the Sistine Chapel at its quietest.

Planning Your Visit and Your Vatican Museum Entrance Fee

Planning your Vatican Museum entrance fee starts with the date: set it first, compare the fee on the official site with the skip-the-line tickets above, and book the slot that fits your day. Take an entry-only ticket if you want to roam. Choose a guide if you want the story behind the frescoes.

Before you go, check three things:

  1. Your date is not a closure day, and it is not a Sunday unless it is the free last Sunday.
  2. Your ticket matches the name on your ID and your time slot.
  3. You know whether your meeting point is the museum gate or a separate office.

For the full picture of the collections, the route and the history, start with the main Vatican Museums guide. For more ticket and pricing answers, browse the Vatican Museums guides. If you want a quick, impartial start, the Online Vatican Tickets homepage lays out every option, and I am not the official ticket office, so always confirm the final price at checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What day to avoid the Vatican?

The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month, which is free and runs 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. They also close on fixed dates such as 1 and 6 January, 1 May and 25 December. Check the official 2026-2027 calendar before you pick a date.

What is the official website of the Vatican museums?

The official site is museivaticani.va, and it also hosts the opening hours and closure calendar. Wikidata lists it as the museums' official website. Reseller sites are separate businesses that sell their own skip-the-line and guided products.

How to visit the Vatican?

Pick a date, book a timed entry slot, and go to the entrance on Viale Vaticano, a short walk from the Ottaviano-San Pietro-Musei Vaticani Metro station. Pass the security check, then scan your ticket at the box office desk. Leave the halls 30 minutes before closing.

Is 2 hours enough for Vatican?

Two hours is enough for a focused visit that covers the main route to the Sistine Chapel. The guided tours in the brief run about 2 to 3 hours, and the museums hold 24 galleries in total. If you want the Pinacoteca or the Raphael Rooms at a slower pace, plan longer.

Can children or students pay less at the Vatican Museums?

Reduced rates exist, but I do not quote them here because the amounts and eligibility rules are set by the museums. Read the current conditions on the official ticket site and bring proof of eligibility to the gate.
