St Peter’s Basilica Città del Vaticano Vatican City is the full postal-style name of the world’s best-known church, and it tells you three useful things at once. The address is Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano, the church sits inside Vatican City, and Vatican City sits inside Rome. I’ll walk you through what that means for your visit: where to enter, what you need to wear, how the dome works and which tours bundle the basilica with the museums.

My advice is simple. Treat the basilica, the dome and the Vatican Museums as three separate visits with three separate entries, then pick the ones that fit your day.

St Peter’s Basilica Città del Vaticano Vatican City at a Glance

St Peter’s Basilica in Città del Vaticano, formally the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, is a church of the Italian Renaissance, according to Wikipedia. Work on the present building began on 18 April 1506 and finished on 18 November 1626. Its main designers were Donato Bramante, Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno, with the square and fittings by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Catholic tradition holds that the basilica is the burial site of Saint Peter, the apostle and first Bishop of Rome. His tomb lies directly below the high altar, also called the Altar of the Confession. That is why so many popes, cardinals and bishops have been buried here since the early Christian period.

The church replaced the older basilica that Emperor Constantine the Great built in the fourth century. Wikipedia describes the present building as one of the holiest Catholic shrines and a major place of pilgrimage.

Where Is St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City?

St. Peter’s Basilica is located at the western end of St. Peter’s Square, at Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano. The Google Maps listing for Saint Peter’s Basilica shows opening hours of 7 am to 7:10 pm every day of the week. Hours can change for ceremonies and holidays, so check the official site on the day.

Wikidata places the building at about 41.90222, 12.45342. In plain terms, you walk through the colonnade, pass the security check and reach the steps of the church.

Many travelers ask whether the basilica is in Rome or in another country. I cover that in my page on whether St. Peter’s Basilica is in Rome or Vatican City, but the short answer is both, geographically. The building is in Vatican City, an independent microstate enclaved within the city of Rome, according to Wikipedia. For a closer look at the square itself, see my notes on Piazza San Pietro.

Is St. Peter’s Basilica the Same Thing as the Vatican?

St. Peter’s Basilica is not the same as the Vatican: it is a single building inside Vatican City, while “the Vatican” can mean the city-state, the papal government or the museum complex. The official basilica site even links to the Vatican Museums and the Vatican State as separate websites.

This matters when you buy a ticket. A basilica visit, a dome climb and a Vatican Museums visit are three products. The basilica itself is a church with its own entrance from the square. The museums, which hold the Sistine Chapel, have a different entrance.

Vatican City is also tiny. Wikidata lists its area as 0.44 km² and its population as 949 in 2024. If you want a longer explanation of the church and its setting, my page on the Vatican Saint Peter’s Basilica goes deeper into the two names.

St. Peter’s Basilica Entry Options Explained

St. Peter’s Basilica entry options differ in what they cover, and the table below sets them side by side using the official basilica site and the tour data I have collected.

Option What it covers Good for
Walk-in basilica visit The church only, after the security check in the square Short, flexible visits
Dome with lift Basilica, lift to the terrace level, inner and outer Ring Views with fewer steps
Dome with stairs Basilica, stairs to the terrace level, inner and outer Ring Travelers who want the full climb
Necropolis The Vatican Necropolis under the central nave History and archaeology fans
Treasury Museum Sacred art and liturgical furnishings Art lovers
Combined guided tour Museums, Sistine Chapel, and basilica when the option is selected First-time visitors

The official site says online dome tickets include entry to the basilica and a Digital Audio Guide. It also lists the Necropolis and the Treasury Museum as separate bookable products on the official homepage.

I can’t give you a ticket price here, because the pages I rely on do not state one. Prices and slots change, so confirm them on the official site before you pay.

A reviewer who skipped the paid extras described the basic visit this way:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That matches what I’d expect: the church itself is the main event, and the extras add depth rather than replace it.

How Do You Climb the Dome?

To climb the dome, book a ticket online, choose lift or stairs, pass security in St. Peter’s Square and show your QR code at the dome entrance. The official FAQ says the lift only goes to the terrace level, and from the inner Ring you must still climb 320 steps to reach the outer Ring.

Here is the process I’d follow:

  1. Book the dome with lift or the dome with stairs on the official dome page.
  2. Watch for three emails: a voucher, a second email with QR codes and your assigned route (Sobieski or Lambertini), and later a third with Digital Audio Guide links.
  3. Follow your assigned route through the security checks in the square.
  4. Show your QR code at the dome entrance.
  5. Enter the basilica at your assigned time. The product page says this is either one hour before or one hour after your dome time, so read your email carefully.

Allow about an hour, according to the dome FAQ. Only small personal bags are permitted. Large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed, and there is no cloakroom.

What Should You Wear Inside the Basilica?

What to wear inside the basilica is clothing suitable for a place of worship, with shoulders and knees covered. That is the rule the official dome FAQ states, and I’d apply it to the whole basilica visit.

I suggest a light scarf or shawl in your bag, because a bare-shoulder problem is easy to solve if you have one. Long trousers or a skirt past the knee work for everyone. Pack small, since bags are limited.

If dress code refusals worry you, this is the fix: dress for church first and weather second.

What If Your QR Codes Do Not Arrive?

If your QR codes do not arrive, check your spam folder first, then write to the booking address if the second email has not arrived within 30 minutes. The official FAQ says to write to booking@basilicasanpietro.va and include your TIE-xxxx or BEE-xxxx reference number.

On the day of your visit, you can retrieve the access QR codes and the Digital Audio Guide codes at myqr.basilicasanpietro.va, by entering your email and the details from your confirmation voucher. Each participant has a different personal code for the audio guide, so make sure everyone in your group has their own.

I’d save the QR codes to your phone and keep a printed copy as well. The official site accepts either an electronic device or a printed page at the entrance, and a dead battery should not cost you a booked slot.

How Much Time Should You Plan for the Basilica?

The time you should plan for the basilica is about an hour for the dome and a separate block for the church itself. The dome FAQ gives about 1 hour on average for the dome, and your basilica entry is set one hour before or after it.

That means a dome booking can fill roughly three hours once you count the security line, the church and the climb. A reviewer who did only the free walk-through said you can see most of the church in about 40 minutes, so a basic visit fits into a short morning.

If you also want the Vatican Museums, I’d treat them as a separate half day. The museums have their own entrance, and the tours below run from two to four hours depending on the provider. Keep the basilica for a different slot, or choose a tour that adds it, so you are not rushing between entrances.

Which Tours Combine the Basilica With the Museums?

Tours that combine the basilica with the Museums are plentiful, and several guided options cover the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the basilica in one morning or afternoon. If you want to see all three without managing separate entries, I’d book Vatican tickets online through a tour that includes the basilica option.

The details differ, so read each listing:

  • Brastours and Made in Rome Tours list St. Peter’s Basilica skip-the-line access in the inclusions.
  • Crown Tours and Real Barcelona Tours offer the basilica as an option on certain versions.
  • City Wonders states that basilica access is not included with its “No Basilica” options and is not accessible on Wednesday mornings. Its Dome climb needs a separate ticket purchased on site if available.
  • One tour description notes that the guided visit of the basilica itself is excluded, so the guide may not lead you inside.

Reviewers often praise the guides. A traveler from the United States who used an audio guide instead of a guide wrote:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”
Dena, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

I’d choose a guided option if you want the story of the art, and a self-guided basilica visit if you prefer your own pace. The Crown Tours listing also mentions pre-reserved dome access with elevator on select options, which is worth checking if you want the dome in the same booking.

What Is Under the Basilica: Saint Peter’s Tomb and the Necropolis?

Saint Peter’s tomb and the Necropolis lie beneath the basilica, where the Vatican Necropolis is a complex of mausoleums dating from about AD 130 to AD 500, according to Wikipedia’s article on Saint Peter’s tomb. It was partly torn down and filled with earth around AD 330 to provide a foundation for the first basilica under Constantine.

Archaeologists found many bones at the 2nd-century shrine. Pope Pius XII said in December 1950 that none could be confirmed as Saint Peter’s with absolute certainty. On 26 June 1968, Pope Paul VI said the relics had been identified in a manner considered convincing.

The official site describes the Necropolis tour as a walk along the ancient path leading to Saint Peter’s tomb, deep in the foundations of the original basilica. It is a separate booking. For the apostle himself, Wikipedia says early Church Fathers attest that Peter spent his closing years in Rome and was martyred there, traditionally on Vatican Hill.

St. Peter’s Basilica by the Numbers

St. Peter’s Basilica by the numbers comes from Wikidata’s entry for St. Peter’s Basilica, and each figure is explained for your visit.

  • Visitors per year: 11,000,000 in 2018. Expect crowds and a security line.
  • Height: 136.6 m. That is why the dome shapes the skyline of the whole area.
  • Length: 220 m. Plan to walk, not stand in one spot.
  • Width: 150 m. Side chapels give you room to move away from the nave crowd.
  • Inception: 18 April 1506. Construction took until 1626 by Wikipedia’s count.
  • Architects: Michelangelo, Giuliano da Sangallo, Donato Bramante and Raphael.
  • Style: Renaissance and baroque architecture.
  • Heritage status: part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Those details are a good reason to look up. The Pietà and Bernini’s Baldachin are the two works that tour listings mention most often.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest Catholic church in the world?

St. Peter's Basilica is the largest church in the world by interior measure, according to [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Peter%27s_Basilica). It is not the mother church of the Catholic Church, though. That title belongs to the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome.

Can I wear jeans to the Vatican?

The official dome FAQ says clothing appropriate for a place of worship is required, and shoulders and knees must always be covered. Jeans that cover the knees meet that rule, while shorts, short skirts and bare shoulders do not. Check the [official site](https://www.basilicasanpietro.va/en/help/the-dome) before you go.

How to visit the Vatican?

Decide whether you want the basilica, the dome, or the Vatican Museums, because each has its own entry. For the basilica and dome, the official site sells tickets with a QR code and a digital audio guide. For the museums and Sistine Chapel, a guided tour with skip-the-line entry is the easiest route.

How much does it cost to enter the Vatican City?

Vatican City itself is a small state of 0.44 km², and you can walk into St. Peter's Square without a ticket. Tickets apply to specific sites such as the dome or the museums. Prices change, so confirm them on the [official basilica site](https://www.basilicasanpietro.va/).

How long does the dome visit take?

The official FAQ says a dome visit lasts about 1 hour on average. The real time depends on how fast you climb and how long you stay at the top. Plan extra time for the security check in the square.
