The Vatican Museum official site is the first place to check before you spend money on a visit, and it is also where most scams try to imitate. Searchers type the phrase to find hours, prices and the ticket portal, and many are unsure which web address is the real one. This page explains what the official site publishes, how its ticket portal differs from the main site, which questions it does not answer and how reseller tickets fit alongside it.
I write this guide independently, and I am not the official ticket office. Every figure below links to the page it comes from, and they were the latest published as of November 2026. If you want to compare entry options after reading, I’d start with Vatican tickets side by side on the homepage.
What Is the Vatican Museum Official Site?
The Vatican Museum official site is the web address museivaticani.va, headed “Vatican Museums - Official Website” and opening with “Welcome to the official site of the Vatican Museums.” The official homepage splits into four sections: the Pope’s Museums, Collections, Organise your visit, and Events and News.
The homepage also shows a small status line that says whether the museums are open or closed at that moment, with a link to opening hours and temporary closures. It lists the collections too, from the Gregorian Egyptian Museum and the Pio Clementino Museum to the Pinacoteca, the Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s Rooms.
Wikipedia gives the same address as the museums’ official website. My pillar page on Vatican Museum tickets explains the ticket side in more depth.
Vatican Museum official site or Vatican Museums official site?
The Vatican Museum official site and the Vatican Museums official site are one and the same. Searches also turn up “official site of the Vatican Museum” and “official site Vatican Museum”, and every wording leads to museivaticani.va. My guides to the Vatican Museum official page and the Vatican Museum site cover those wordings.

Vatican Museums by the Numbers
- 1506: the year the museums’ inception is dated. This is a collection with five centuries behind it, so expect depth, not a quick stop.
- 1771: the year of official opening, when the papal collection became a museum in the formal sense.
- 1,612,530 visitors per year (2021): the Wikidata figure for 2021. Wikipedia reports 6.8 million for 2024, so plan for crowds, not for that quieter year.
- 0.44 km²: the area of Vatican City. The museums, the basilica and the square all sit inside one very small state, which is why separate entrances matter.
- 949 residents (2024): the population of Vatican City, so visitors far outnumber the people who live there.
- Euro: the currency, which is why official prices are in euros and the dollar amounts here are conversions.
- World Heritage Site: the heritage designation of Vatican City.
Book aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36Where Do You Buy Tickets From the Official Site?
Official Vatican Museum tickets are bought on the ticket portal, not on the main site. The official prices and tickets page states that the only official site for purchasing tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va.
That is an important detail, because the main site and the portal sit on different addresses. If a page asks for card details and the address is not the portal, stop and check.
The official page adds a warning in plain terms: beware of potential scams and websites that use domains similar to the official one, which may charge significantly higher prices. It advises always checking that you are buying through the official portal.
My pages on the Vatican Museum tickets official site and the official site for Vatican Museums tickets in Rome go through that purchase step by step.

What Prices Does the Official Site Publish?
The official site’s prices are a full ticket at 20.00 euros, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 6 November 2026, and a reduced ticket at 10.00 euros, about $11. Both prices are without online booking. A “Skip the Line” booking on the official website adds a charge to the reduced categories, as the page shows.
| Category | Without online booking | With skip-the-line booking |
|---|---|---|
| Full entry ticket | 20.00 euros (about $22) | Check the portal for the fee |
| Reduced entry ticket | 10.00 euros (about $11) | 10.00 + 5.00 euros (about $17) |
| Reduced ticket, schools | 5.00 euros (about $6) | 5.00 + 2.00 euros (about $8) |
| Reduced ticket, students | 10.00 euros (about $11) | 10.00 + 5.00 euros (about $17) |
| Castel Gandolfo Papal Palace and Secret Garden | 12.00 euros full ticket (about $13) | See the official page |
The entry ticket entitles you to the museums and the Sistine Chapel solely on the day it is issued, and tickets cannot be refunded. The page does not list a booking fee for the full ticket, so I do not state one. Confirm the total on the portal before paying.
Who enters free?
Free entry goes to visitors on the last Sunday of the month, children below the age of 7, directors of museum institutions and other heritage bodies, and all disabled visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67 percent, according to the official list. A companion is covered for visitors who are not self-sufficient.
Free tickets for disabled visitors cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk desks in the entrance hall, on presentation of certification or the European Disability Card.
What Hours Does the Official Site List?
The official opening hours run Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with final entry at 6:00 pm. The official hours page adds that visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before museum closing time.
On the last Sunday of the month the museums open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, with final entry at 12:30 pm and free entry. Other Sundays are closed. The page notes exceptions if the last Sunday falls on Easter Sunday, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December.
Fixed closures are 1 and 6 January, 11 February, 19 March, 6 April, 1 May, 29 June, 14 and 15 August, 1 November, and 8, 25 and 26 December. At the time of writing, temporary closures include all sectors on 10 November from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and the Sistine Chapel on 4 and 18 December from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The page links a 2026-2027 opening and closing calendar as a PDF.

What Does the Vatican Museum Official Site Not Cover?
The Vatican Museum official site does not cover St. Peter’s Basilica, which runs its own official website. The basilica’s opening hours page lists 7:00 to 20:00 from 1 June to 25 October 2026 and 7:00 to 19:00 from 26 October 2026 to 28 March 2027.
Treat the two as separate trips. The museum ticket covers the museums and the chapel, and the basilica, the dome and the necropolis are booked through the basilica’s own pages. My page on the Vatican City official site and the one on the Vatican official site explain how the different official sites divide the work.
The museum site also does not run guided tours of every kind. Third-party sellers offer guides, hosts and bundles, and the listings below show what they include.

What Else Can You Learn From the Official Pages?
The official pages show what is inside before you decide how long to stay. The homepage menu lists museums such as the Gregorian Etruscan Museum, the Chiaramonti Museum, the Lapidary Gallery, the Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi, the Carriage Pavilion, the Borgia Apartment and the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art.
The museum’s collection pages cover the Sistine Chapel in depth, and the chapel page says the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who had the old Cappella Magna restored between 1477 and 1480, and that Michelangelo painted the ceiling for Julius II, finishing in October 1512.
This matters for planning because the official collection pages let you pick your priorities. With 24 galleries, you will not see every section, so reading the list first helps you choose two or three to slow down for.
A practical habit is to read the hours page the week you travel, not months ahead. Temporary closures are added to that page for individual sectors, such as the New Wing or the Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi, and a closure that affects the one section you came for is easier to handle when you know early.
Keep a note of the page address too. Because look-alike domains exist, saving the real one in your bookmarks means you always return to the right place.
The last-Sunday free opening also has its own booking path. The hours page says guided tours on that day are possible upon reservation, which means free entry does not remove the need to plan ahead.
Is It Better to Buy From the Official Site or a Reseller?
Buying from the official site or a reseller has no single right answer, because the two solve different problems. The official portal sells the entry ticket directly, while a reseller bundles it with a guide, an audio guide or a host and usually shows more tour options in one place.
One entry-ticket listing includes the booking fee and an audio guide if that option is selected, and excludes a guided tour, a basilica ticket and the dome. Another tour describes an official Vatican guide with headsets and priority entry, and excludes a guided tour of the basilica.

A reviewer of the guided option wrote that you should not visit the Vatican without a tour guide and skip-the-line tickets, because the museums and the chapel are wall to wall people. They added that they were escorted by a company rep to the official guide meeting point and that tickets should be bought in advance to avoid horrendous lines.
“Do not visit the Vatican without a tour guide and skip the line tickets. The Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel are wall to wall people. Lots of stairs . Our museum guide was excellent, knowledgeable and a good sense of humour. Escorted by tour company rep to official guide meeting point with skip the line tickets. Always get your tickets in advance to avoid horrendous lines!”
That is one traveler’s experience, but it matches the museums’ scale. Wikipedia reports 6.8 million visitors in 2024, second only to the Louvre among art museums.
Guided options that include the basilica
Guided tours that include the basilica state it in the listing, so look for that wording if you want it on the same day. One lists skip-the-line tickets for the museums, the chapel and the basilica with official Vatican headsets. Another lists basilica access, but not with “No Basilica” options and not on Wednesday mornings, and excludes the dome climb.
Another product is only the basilica with fast-track dome entry and an official audio guide, for people who already hold museum plans. A different museum-only tour with an official guide excludes basilica access.

Prices change, so I do not repeat them here. Read the inclusions, the meeting point and the cancellation terms on the listing before you pay.

How Do You Find the Entrance After You Book?
Finding the entrance after you book usually means heading to the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, unless your voucher says otherwise. One entry listing tells you to show your ticket to the security guards and scan it at the online and groups box office after the security check.
Guided tours often start elsewhere. One meets at a partner office on Via Vespasiano 26 and warns that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point, with a ten-minute walk from the Ottaviano stop on Line A. Another tells you to arrive at the museum entrance 30 minutes early and look for a large sign reading “VISITE GUIDATE” after security.
The Rome Metro station named after the museums, Ottaviano - San Pietro - Musei Vaticani, opened on 16 February 1980 and sits in the Prati district. The wrong meeting point costs more time than any queue, so check your voucher twice.
“Ottaviano–San Pietro–Musei Vaticani, also just known as Ottaviano, is a station on Line A of the Rome Metro.”
What Will You See After You Get In?
What you will see inside is a one-way route that ends in the Sistine Chapel. Wikipedia counts 24 galleries or rooms in the museums, with roughly 70,000 works and about 20,000 on display, and it names the Raphael Rooms and the chapel as major stops.
The museums trace their origin to the Laocoon and His Sons sculpture, discovered on 14 January 1506 and bought by Pope Julius II, who displayed it one month later. If you want to compare other sections or routes, my hub on Vatican tickets lists the guides.
Eating nearby is easy. The Maps data lists a pizza restaurant on Via delle Fornaci and a restaurant on Borgo Pio, both with daily hours that you should confirm before going.

Planning Around the Vatican Museum Official Site
Planning around the Vatican Museum official site means taking the facts from it and the ticket from a trusted channel. Check the hours page for your date, decide whether you qualify for a reduced or free category, and compare the official ticket with a reseller only after you know the inclusions you want.
A short checklist:
- Open museivaticani.va and read the hours and closures for your date.
- Buy only through tickets.museivaticani.va if you want the official ticket.
- Compare resellers on inclusions, meeting point and cancellation terms.
- Keep the basilica, the dome and the necropolis as separate plans.
- Bring documents for any reduced or free category.
The Vatican Museum official site gives you the rules, and a good plan gives you the day. When you are ready to compare, the homepage lists the options, and the official tariff page is the final word on prices.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Vatican museum where the Sistine Chapel is?
Yes. The official prices page says the entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued, and Wikipedia describes the chapel as the last room visited in the museums.
Is the Vatican museum free?
Only for certain groups and days. The official list includes the last Sunday of the month, children below the age of 7, heritage professionals and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67 percent.
What is the difference between the Vatican and the Vatican Museum?
The Vatican is the papal state, and the Vatican Museums are the public museums inside it. St. Peter's Basilica has its own official website, its own hours and its own entrance.
Can you walk from the Vatican museum to St. Peter's Basilica?
They are separate sites with separate entrances in the same city-state. The official sites treat them as two visits, and one tour notes that St. Peter's Square is not the meeting point for its museum tour.
What is the most famous piece in the Vatican museum?
The Sistine Chapel, with its ceiling and altar wall by Michelangelo, is the best-known stop. The Laocoon and His Sons sculpture is the work the museums trace their origin to.
Are the official site's prices the final price?
They are the base prices. The official page lists a full ticket at 20 euros (about $22) and a reduced ticket at 10 euros (about $11) without online booking, and a skip-the-line booking adds a charge, so check the portal for the total on your date.
