Musée Du Vatican Ticket

By Updated 12 min read

A musée du vatican ticket (the Vatican Museums ticket) costs €20 at full price on the official site and includes the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued. Reduced, student and free categories exist, and skip-the-line booking adds a small fee or a partner price.

Musée du Vatican ticket is how many French-speaking visitors search for the Vatican Museums entry pass, and the answer is simple: one ticket opens the Museums and the Sistine Chapel for a single day. I’ll walk you through what it costs, who pays less, where to buy it safely and when a partner ticket makes more sense than the official one. Prices and rules change, so I link every figure to its source and tell you where to double-check.

If you only want the short version, here it is. The full price is €20 and it is sold by the Vatican Museums price and ticket page. Booking a skip-the-line slot online adds a fee, and partner tickets bundle that fee with extras such as audio guides or a host.

Musée du Vatican Ticket Price: What Does It Cost?

Musée du Vatican ticket price for a full official entry is €20.00 without online booking, which works out to about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 (official price list). The reduced ticket costs €10.00, or about $11. Skip-the-line booking on the official site adds €5.00 to the reduced ticket, so that version costs €15.00, about $17.

I converted the euros with the European Central Bank reference rates, where 1 euro was 1.1165 US dollars on 2026-11-06. Your card rate will differ a little, so treat the dollar figures as estimates.

Here is how the official categories compare:

Ticket category Without online booking With “Skip the Line” booking
Full entry €20.00 (about $22) Fee applies; see the official portal
Reduced entry €10.00 (about $11) €10.00 + €5.00 (about $17)
Students up to 25 €10.00 (about $11) €10.00 + €5.00 (about $17)
Schools €5.00 (about $6) €5.00 + €2.00 (about $8)
Children under 7 Free Free

Those figures come straight from the Museums’ own list, which I re-read before writing this page. Because they can change, the official ticket page should be your last check before you pay.

Why partner tickets cost more

Partner tickets cost more because a marketplace musée du vatican ticket is priced differently. It is a bundle: the entry fee, a booking fee and often a host, an audio guide or a guided group. In the listings I reviewed, the entry-only partner tickets run from about $32 to about $53, and the guided tour reaches about $110. I explain the trade-off further down.

Does the Ticket Include the Sistine Chapel?

The Sistine Chapel is included in the Vatican Museums entry ticket, which covers the Museums and the Chapel only on the day it is issued (official price list). You do not buy the Chapel separately, because it sits at the end of the Museum route.

This is where visitors get confused. The ticket does not include St. Peter’s Basilica. The partner listings I reviewed say the Basilica is free of charge but that access is not guaranteed, because crowd control can change it. Two listings also state that the Basilica dome is not included.

So I’d plan the Museums and the Basilica as two separate visits, ideally on different parts of the day. Our Vatican Museum tickets guide lays out how the two fit together.

Where Is the Official Site for a Vatican Museums Ticket?

The official site for a Vatican Museums ticket is tickets.museivaticani.va, the only place to buy online, as the Museums state on their price page (official notice). They also warn about websites with look-alike domains that can charge significantly higher prices.

My rule is simple: type the address yourself or follow the link from the Museums’ own page. If a site shows a price far above €20 plus a small fee and does not say it is a reseller, close the tab.

Our guide is independent and is not the ticket office. We link to partner tickets for readers who want a bundle, and we say so when we do. For official purchases, use the Museums’ portal.

Who Pays Less? Reduced, Student and Free Entry

Reduced, student and free entry is limited to specific groups, so a musée du vatican ticket discount is not open to everyone. Students up to and including 25 years old who hold a document from their school or university confirming enrolment for the current year pay the reduced €10 rate (student ticket rules).

Be careful here. The Museums state that anyone who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must buy a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket is cancelled and cannot be refunded. Carry your proof.

Other categories listed on the official page:

  • Pilgrim groups: groups on a pilgrimage can get a reduced ticket with a letter from the parish, institute or diocese, for up to 20 people including the priest (pilgrimage rules). Free entry does not apply to them.
  • Schools: €5.00 without online booking, or €5.00 plus €2.00 with skip-the-line booking.
  • Under 7: children below the age of 7 enter free.
  • Visitors with disabilities: those with a certified invalidity of at least 67% enter free, and a companion can too if the visitor is not self-sufficient. These tickets cannot be booked online. They are issued at the “Special Permits” or “Welcome Desk” in the entrance hall, with priority entry.

Is There a Free Day for the Museums?

The free day for the Museums is the last Sunday of the month, subject to the Museums’ calendar of openings and closures (official price list). Always check that calendar, because a free day can still be affected by closures.

I’d think twice before choosing it. A free day is a crowd magnet, and the reviews I read describe waits of several hours at busy times. One Google Maps reviewer put it plainly:

“A must-visit museum in your lifetime! Maybe because of the millennium celebrations, it was extra crowded — make sure to come early to line up. I waited in line for 4 hours this time, but it was absolutely worth it!”
Casber · Google Maps review about CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI

If your schedule is tight, paying for a timed slot is usually the better trade. A free ticket that costs you half a day in line is not really free.

Should You Book Skip-the-Line or Buy on the Day?

Skip-the-line booking is the better choice if you can plan ahead. The official route is a skip-the-line booking on the Museums’ site, which adds a fee but gives you a time slot. Partner tickets do the same job and add extras. Buying at the door is possible, but you take the queue risk.

A traveler from Romania wrote that the only way to see the Museums is with a skip-the-line ticket, and that without one you should add at least two to three hours of waiting:

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

On the other side, a Google Maps reviewer said buying online was “a nightmare” and instead arrived around 17:00, waited 30 to 40 minutes and then rushed through the galleries before closing. That story shows the real cost of the door strategy: less time inside. Visitors who want to understand every ticket type before choosing can see every ticket type side by side on our main page.

What the marketplace tickets add

The marketplace tickets add a few concrete differences over the official one. The first, rated 4.48 from 160,009 reviews, gives entry through a dedicated entrance, with an optional audio guide at a desk inside. A second, rated 4.23 from 13,313 reviews, asks you to redeem the ticket at Via Germanico 8, arrive 15 minutes early and keep to your reserved time. A guided option, rated 4.32 from 10,589 reviews, caps groups at 20 people.

Those details matter more than the headline price. A late arrival can lose the skip-the-line benefit, and the meeting point is not always at the Museum door.

Musée du Vatican Ticket Options on GetYourGuide

Musée du Vatican ticket options on GetYourGuide fall into three kinds, and I’d pick by how much help you want. These are affiliate listings, so we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and we are not the official ticket office.

  • Entry only, self-guided: the cheapest partner route, good if you already know what you want to see.
  • Entry plus a host: useful if the meeting-point logistics worry you.
  • Guided tour: best if you want the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel explained.

If you want more than entry, our guide to the Vatican Museums tickets in French compares the same options for readers searching in French. A related page covers the musée vatican ticket wording for visitors who type it without the article.

How Do You Get to the Museum Entrance?

Getting to the museum entrance means walking to the Vatican Museums gate on Viale Vaticano. The partner listing for the first ticket tells you to go directly there, show your ticket to the security guards, then scan it at the box office marked “CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI” after the security check.

That desk shows up on the map as the online and groups ticket office in Vatican City. The Museums themselves are listed with opening hours of 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday on the map listing, which is a good reason to check the official calendar for your date. St. Peter’s Basilica is listed from 7 am to 7:10 pm.

Meeting points differ by ticket. One partner meets you at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, another at Via Germanico 8, and the guided tour at Piazza del Risorgimento in front of Bar L’Ottagono. Read your voucher twice, because walking to the wrong address is the most common way to burn your time slot.

What Can You See With the Ticket?

What you can see with one ticket is the Vatican Museums, a huge complex of galleries. The official site lists collections including the Pio Clementino Museum, the Gregorian Egyptian Museum, the Pinacoteca, the Raphael’s Rooms, the Borgia Apartment and the Sistine Chapel (official museum list).

The partner listings highlight Michelangelo’s fresco “The Creation of Adam” in the Sistine Chapel and, for the guided option, the Raphael Rooms and “The School of Athens”. One listing says the collection holds over 20,000 works of art.

How long should you allow? The listings give 2.5 to 3 hours for a basic visit, and one traveler said you need around four hours to enjoy the Museums properly. I’d block half a day and not schedule anything demanding after it.

Is Castel Sant’Angelo Part of the Same Ticket?

Castel Sant’Angelo’s ticket is separate, since it has its own entry and is not part of the Museums’ pass. One partner listing for it costs about $25, rated 4.57 from 9,341 reviews, and includes a digital audio guide app and rooftop views.

I mention it because visitors sometimes ask whether to pair it with the Vatican. It makes a reasonable second stop, but plan it as a separate booking. Our Vatican City tickets overview shows what else a day in the area can include, and the Vatican City Rome tickets page covers combos.

Two sites often mixed up with the Museums are the gardens and the papal palace. For those, see our guides to the Vatican Gardens tickets in French and the Vatican palace tickets in French. Related, the Museums’ own price page lists a separate €12 full ticket for the Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castel Gandolfo.

Musée du Vatican Ticket by the Numbers

Musée du Vatican ticket by the numbers comes down to a few facts that help you picture the place you are paying to enter. Each figure comes from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City:

  • Area: 0.44 km². It is tiny, so once you are inside the walls, distances are short; the Museum route itself is the long part.
  • Inception: 1929-02-11. The modern state dates to the Lateran Treaty, as the Wikipedia entry on Vatican City explains.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site. That status is why access rules and crowd control are strict.
  • Population: 949 (2024). The smallest country by population, which explains why most visitors are day-trippers.
  • Currency: euro. Prices on official pages are in euros, so budget for exchange.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and the official site are in Italian first.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope rules the state as an absolute monarchy, per Wikipedia.

What Should You Know Before You Buy?

What to know before you buy comes down to a few rules that save money and stress. First, the official ticket is valid only on the day it is issued, and official tickets cannot be refunded (official price list). If your plans are uncertain, check the cancellation terms on a partner ticket before you choose.

Second, arrive inside your time slot. One partner states that latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line access, and another says not to arrive outside your assigned slot.

Third, compare the real total. A cheap-looking ticket can leave out the audio guide, the host or the Basilica access. A traveler summed up the value case for the entry-only option with a short note:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”

My Advice for Your Musée du Vatican Ticket

My advice for your musée du Vatican ticket is simple, and here is what I would do. If you are a student or a child, take the official reduced or free route and carry proof. If you are an adult with a tight schedule, book a timed skip-the-line slot, either on the official portal or through a partner that includes what you need.

If you want help with the collection, pick the guided tour. If you want freedom, pick entry only and use an audio guide. And if you want the clearest overview before deciding, start with the ticket options here and then return to the official page for the final price.

One last point: your musée du vatican ticket is for the Museums and Sistine Chapel only, so give St. Peter’s Basilica its own slot. Check the Museums’ calendar for closures on your date, buy only on the official domain or a known partner, and keep your voucher handy at the entrance.
