Vatican City Sunday

By Updated 13 min read

Vatican City Sunday visits work best if you plan around St. Peter's Basilica, which is open on Sundays, because the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are closed on every Sunday except the last one of the month. On that last Sunday the museums open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with free entry.

Vatican City Sunday plans come down to one rule: the church side of the city is open, and the museum side is not. St. Peter’s Basilica welcomes visitors on Sundays, while the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel close on every Sunday except the last one of the month. I’m Giulia Romano, and below I’ll show you exactly what to do with a Vatican City Sunday so you don’t arrive at a locked door.

If you only want the short answer to is the Vatican open on Sundays?, it is “partly.” The rest of this page explains which parts, at what hours, and what I would book instead.

Is Vatican City Open on a Sunday?

Vatican City is open to visitors on a Sunday, though only in part. You can enter St. Peter’s Square and the Basilica, but the museums stay shut unless the day is the last Sunday of the month.

Here is how the pieces split. The Basilica’s official page lists Sunday hours for the church and for confession, so you can plan around real times (Basilica opening hours). The Vatican Museums list Sunday as a closing day, with one exception that I explain further down (museum days and hours).

Google Maps data agrees with this split. It shows the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel as closed on Sunday and St. Peter’s Basilica as open from 7 am to 7:10 pm. Treat that as a quick check, and use the official pages for the final word.

If you want a second view of the same question, our page on whether Vatican City is closed on Sunday walks through it from the closure side.

Vatican City on a Sunday: Hours at a Glance

One detail trips people up: the Basilica’s own guided visits run on a shorter Sunday schedule than on weekdays. Monday to Saturday they run from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but on Sundays and Vatican holidays only from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you want a guided Basilica visit, plan your Vatican City Sunday around that afternoon window.

Can You Visit the Vatican Museums on a Sunday?

Visiting the Vatican Museums on a Sunday is possible only on the last Sunday of the month. Every other Sunday, the museums and the Sistine Chapel stay closed.

The official hours page says the museums are open “every last Sunday of the month” from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the final entry at 12:30 p.m. It adds a condition: the last Sunday must not fall on Easter Sunday, June 29, December 25, December 26 or December 31 (Vatican Museums opening days). The same page lists regular Sundays among the closing days.

That is why many visitors ask whether they can tour the Vatican on Sundays with a guide. On most Sundays you cannot enter the museums at all, so no museum tour can run. The only museum tours on a Sunday are guided visits on the free last Sunday, which the official page says you can reserve (reserve a Sunday visit).

For 2026, the last Sundays left are November 29 and December 27. I worked those dates out from the calendar, so double check them in the museums’ official openings and closures calendar for 2026 to 2027.

How Does the Free Last Sunday of the Month Work?

The free last Sunday of the month means Vatican Museums entry costs nothing, with doors open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The official site lists the last Sunday of the month first among its free-entry categories (prices and tickets).

Free does not mean easy. The museums stop admitting people at 12:30 p.m., and visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. So in practice you have a window of about three and a half hours to get in line, pass security and see the Sistine Chapel.

Compare that with a normal ticket. A full entry ticket costs EUR 20 without online booking, about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on November 6, 2026. A reduced ticket is EUR 10 (about $11.17), or EUR 10 plus EUR 5 with the “Skip the Line” booking on the official site. Tickets cannot be refunded, per the same official page.

My advice is simple. If you have only one day in Rome and it is the last Sunday, go for the free entry and arrive early. If you have flexibility, pick a weekday and skip the crowds. One Google Maps reviewer described a rushed late visit this way, which is a good warning for a short Sunday window:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

Is St. Peter’s Basilica Open on Sunday?

St. Peter’s Basilica is open on Sundays, running 07:00 to 19:00 from October 26, 2026 to March 28, 2027. From June 1 to October 25, 2026 the hours were 07:00 to 20:00 (official hours).

Sunday is a working day for the church, not a day off. The Basilica lists Sunday confession from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. That means staff and worshippers fill the building, so move quietly and expect parts of it to be reserved for prayer.

The dome follows its own season. In the winter period it runs from 7:30 am to 5 pm, and in the summer period from 7 am to 6 pm, according to the same page. If you want the views from the top, go early in the day on your Vatican City Sunday.

Entry to the church itself is free of charge, though one tour listing notes that Basilica access is not guaranteed because crowd control can vary. The Maps data supports the idea of an early start. One reviewer wrote:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

I’d treat 07:00 as the best time of the day on any Sunday, simply because lines grow as the morning goes on. Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, which I always recommend for church visits.

How Do You Attend Sunday Mass at the Vatican?

Attending Sunday Mass at the Vatican starts at the Basilica’s dedicated access gate for worshippers, where staff lead you along the prayer route. The Basilica publishes its list of Holy Masses on its own site, so pick your hour there (Holy Masses schedule).

The official hours page explains how the system works. Worshippers and celebrants are asked to present themselves at the indicated entrance gate for identification, and designated staff accompany them along the entire path reserved for prayer before guiding them to the exit. Once you are back outside, you can visit the Basilica later by re-entering through the standard entrances (Basilica access rules).

This matters for planning. If you come for Mass, you will not wander the church, take photos of every chapel and then stay for the service. Treat the Mass as one visit and the sightseeing as a second one, later in the day.

For a fuller walkthrough, read our guides on Mass inside Vatican City and on how to attend Mass on a Sunday. Both cover the practical steps in more detail than I can fit here.

What Can You Do in Vatican City on a Sunday?

Things to do in Vatican City on a Sunday include seeing St. Peter’s Square, walking through St. Peter’s Basilica, climbing the dome, joining an afternoon Basilica guided visit and having lunch nearby. The museums and the Sistine Chapel stay out of reach unless it is the last Sunday of the month.

Here is the plan I would follow on a normal Sunday:

  1. Early morning: enter the Basilica at 07:00 and see it before the crowds build up.
  2. Late morning: climb the dome, which opens at 7:30 am in winter and 7 am in summer.
  3. Midday: eat lunch outside the walls. Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci 27 is listed as open 11 am to 11 pm on Sundays, with a 4.7 rating from more than 18,000 reviews on Maps.
  4. Afternoon: join a guided Basilica visit between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., with last registration at 3 p.m.

The map block below shows the main sites and the lunch stop, so you can see how close they are to each other.

Sunday Visits to the Vatican: Closures and Holidays

Sunday visits to the Vatican are affected most by closures when a holiday falls on or near your date. The Vatican Museums list these closing dates: January 1 and 6, February 11, March 19, April 6, May 1, June 29, August 14 and 15, November 1, and December 8, 25 and 26 (official closure list).

The Vatican public holiday calendar for 2026 includes several of the same days, such as All Saints Day on November 1, the Immaculate Conception on December 8 and Christmas Day on December 25 (public holidays data). Italy has its own list, so a day can be a holiday in Rome without being one inside the Vatican, and the reverse is true as well. For closures, always follow the official museum calendar.

A holiday that falls on a Sunday can also affect the free last Sunday. For example, the museums do not open on a last Sunday that coincides with Easter Sunday, June 29, December 25, December 26 or December 31. The museums also publish temporary closures. As of November 2026, they list one for the New Wing on November 5, a short morning closure of all sectors on November 10 and evening closures of the Sistine Chapel on December 4 and 18.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers starts with its size: it is the smallest country in the world, so a Sunday visit takes in much of it on foot. These Wikidata figures each shape how you plan your day:

  • Area: 0.44 km². You can cross the whole state in a short walk, so you rarely need transport once you arrive.
  • Founded: February 11, 1929. That is the date the Lateran Treaty created the modern state, and the museums mark it with a closure each year on February 11.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Almost everyone you meet on a Sunday is a visitor or a worker.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The listing covers the whole state, which explains the crowds.
  • Currency: euro. Prices on official pages are in euros, and I convert them to dollars where I can.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Expect signs and Masses in more than one language.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope is also the ruler of the city-state.

Wikipedia puts it in one line:

“Vatican City, officially the Vatican City State, is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.”

Better Than a Vatican City Sunday? Book a Weekday Ticket

A weekday Vatican ticket beats a regular Vatican City Sunday if your trip is flexible, since the museums will be closed on that day. Move your museum visit to a day from Monday to Saturday, when they open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the final entry at 6:00 p.m.

Booking ahead is the safest way to see the Sistine Chapel with less waiting. If you want a plain entry ticket, these two are the simplest options, and both let you explore at your own pace:

Tour 62214 has a 4.48 rating from more than 160,000 reviews and costs $36.21 at the time of writing. The other costs $32.31. Neither includes a guide, and neither includes the Basilica or the dome, so keep those for your Sunday.

If you would rather have a guide, a guided tour gives context for the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms. These two combine the museums with the Basilica:

Crown Tours is rated 4.65 from more than 19,000 reviews and starts at $71.31, with a licensed guide and headsets. The Enjoy Rome tour costs $60.17. Several travelers mention they wanted clearer details about the Basilica part, so read the inclusions before you pick one. To compare every option side by side, start with the ticket options here.

Always check the official site for the current price, since the listings above can change. The only official online shop for museum tickets is the Vatican Museums portal, and the museums warn about look-alike sites that charge much more. We are an independent guide and not the ticket office.

Planning Your Vatican City Sunday: Final Checklist

Planning your Vatican City Sunday works best with St. Peter’s Basilica as the anchor and the museums saved for another day. If it is the last Sunday of the month, the free museum morning is the exception, and you should arrive well before the 12:30 p.m. final entry.

Here is my short checklist:

  • Check whether your Sunday is the last of the month, and whether it clashes with a closure date.
  • Be at the Basilica at 07:00 for the shortest lines.
  • Book your museum visit for another day, ideally through our main page for Vatican tickets if you want a skip-the-line option.
  • Wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees.
  • If you plan to visit the Vatican on a Sunday as part of a longer Rome stay, keep Saturday free for the museums.

That plan gives you the best of both days. You get a quiet Basilica on Sunday and a full museum visit when the galleries are open. If your dates are fixed and the museums matter more than Mass, look at a weekday instead, and keep the Vatican City Sunday for the church.
