Vatican Churches

By Updated 13 min read

Vatican churches means a small group of sites inside a 0.44 km² city-state, led by St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. The basilica is free to enter, while the Sistine Chapel sits inside the Vatican Museums and needs a museum ticket.

Vatican churches are fewer than most visitors expect, and two of them matter far more than the rest: St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Vatican City covers just 0.44 km², so you can reach the main sacred sites on foot in one day. The catch is that they have different entrances, different rules and different opening days.

For these Vatican churches, I’m going to separate the two so you do not queue at the wrong door. Along the way I’ll cover hours, what is free, what costs money, and how to avoid the most common planning mistakes.

Which Vatican Churches Should You Visit?

Vatican churches worth visiting begin with St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, the two almost every visitor wants. Wikipedia lists St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums among the religious, historic and cultural sites of the city-state, which is a designated World Heritage Site.

That list shows how the place works. The Vatican is a working religious capital, not a theme park, and its churches sit beside offices, museums and gardens. Only some of them are open to ordinary visitors.

Here is how I’d rank them for a first trip:

  • St. Peter’s Basilica: the main church, free to enter, open every day.
  • The Sistine Chapel: a papal chapel reached through the Vatican Museums with a paid ticket.
  • Smaller chapels: the Vatican Museums list the Niccoline Chapel, the Chapel of Urban VIII and the Chapel of St. Peter Martyr as part of the visit. You pass them on the museum route.

If you only have half a day, choose one of the two big sites and do it well. If you have a full day, the order I recommend is the museums and chapel in the morning and the basilica afterward.

Churches in the Vatican: how they fit together

Churches in the Vatican form one compact complex under a shared set of security rules. St. Peter’s Basilica faces the square, while the Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, a separate approach on the other side of the walls.

The two entrances are not connected for ordinary visitors, and this is the source of most confusion. One tour listing tells you to go directly to the Vatican Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano. A basilica visit means walking around to Piazza San Pietro instead.

For a church-focused overview of the whole city-state, my guide to the church in Vatican City covers the basilica in more depth. If your question is more about the institution than the buildings, I wrote up the Catholic church in the Vatican as its own explainer.

Is the Vatican a Catholic church or a Protestant church?

The Vatican is a Catholic church state, not a Protestant one. Vatican City is ruled by the pope and governed by the Holy See, the central authority of the Catholic Church worldwide.

That matters for your visit because the churches are active places of worship. Dress and behavior rules follow from that, and staff can refuse entry if you ignore them. The head of state is currently listed as Leo XIV, and the city-state’s official languages are Italian and Latin.

Vatican Churches by the Numbers

Vatican churches by the numbers give you a feel for the scale of what you are visiting. Each figure comes from Wikidata’s record for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². The whole state is smaller than many city parks, so walking between sites takes minutes, though the queues take longer.
  • Inception: 1929-02-11. The modern state dates from that day, which is why its churches are described as part of a young country with very old buildings.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. This explains the strict rules on photography, bags and behavior in some areas.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Most of the people you see on the grounds are visitors, not residents.
  • Currency: the euro. Bring a card or euros for the cafés and shops around the entrances.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and staff announcements are usually available in other languages too, but expect Italian first.

Wikipedia’s article notes the area as 0.49 square kilometres in its text, while Wikidata gives 0.44 km². I use the Wikidata figure here, and the difference does not change how you plan a visit.

St. Peter’s Basilica: The Free Church Among the Vatican Churches

St. Peter’s Basilica is the headline church among the Vatican churches, and it costs nothing to enter. One reviewer on Google Maps wrote that if you are only there for the free visit, you can see most of it in 40 minutes.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

The listed hours are 7 am to 7:10 pm, seven days a week. That makes it the only major Vatican church open on Sundays, which is why I often tell people to save it for the day the museums are shut. Confirm hours and closures on the official basilica site before you go, because services and events can change them.

Free does not mean no line. The same reviewer arrived at 6:45 am and still found a queue, though it moved quickly. A security check comes first, so budget time for it and carry only a small bag.

If you want the practical side of tickets and extras, read my guide to St. Peter’s Basilica tickets. For a plain answer on cost, see is St. Peter’s Basilica free?. If you want to attend a service rather than sightsee, Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica explains how that works.

What the free visit does not include

The free visit does not cover everything, since several tour listings are explicit that the basilica and the dome are separate from a museum ticket. One lists “Ticket to St. Peter’s Basilica” as excluded, noting it is free of charge but that access is not guaranteed and may vary with crowd control. The dome is listed as an extra.

So treat the basilica as a free visit with a possible wait, and the dome as an optional paid add-on. Some tours bundle a pre-reserved dome visit with an elevator to the terrace, which can save you the queue.

The Sistine Chapel: the other Vatican church everyone asks about

The Sistine Chapel counts as a church in every sense that matters, yet you cannot walk up to it from the square. You enter through the Vatican Museums, and the chapel is one of the stops on the route. The official museum site lists it alongside the Raphael’s Rooms and the Borgia Apartment in its collections menu.

Google Maps lists the Sistine Chapel with the same hours as the museums: 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. Always check the official opening hours page for temporary closures. That is the one source I trust over any third-party listing.

The chapel is where visitors come to see Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. Tour listings also name the Last Judgment as a highlight. Both are on the chapel’s walls and ceiling, which is why people tilt their heads back and slow down in the room.

For ticket types and what each one includes, I’d start with the Sistine Chapel tickets guide. For a wider look at the chapel itself, see the Sistine Chapel in Rome page.

Sistine Chapel versus St. Peter’s: the key differences

  • St. Peter’s Basilica: free entry after a security check; enter from Piazza San Pietro; listed 7 am–7:10 pm daily, including Sunday; known for the Pietà and the Baldachin; Google Maps rating 4.8.
  • Sistine Chapel: museum ticket required; enter through the Vatican Museums on Viale Vaticano; listed 8 am–8 pm, closed Sunday; known for the Creation of Adam and the Last Judgment; Google Maps rating 4.7.

The Sistine Chapel versus St. Peter’s comparison above draws its hours and ratings from the Google Maps listings. Treat them as a starting point and check the official sites for the day you travel.

Can You Visit the Vatican Churches on a Sunday?

You can visit the Vatican churches on a Sunday, but only the basilica, which is listed as open on Sundays, while the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are listed as closed.

If your trip includes a Sunday, I’d put the basilica there and move the museum visit to a weekday. Do this before you book anything. Many travelers book a museum slot first and then discover the date does not work.

How Do You Plan a Visit to the Vatican Churches in One Day?

A one-day visit to the Vatican churches works best with the Sistine Chapel first and St. Peter’s Basilica second, and the museums in between. That order matches the opening hours and puts the paid, timed entry before the free, walk-in one.

Here is the sequence I’d follow:

  1. Morning: enter the Vatican Museums at your booked slot. Let the route carry you through the galleries to the Sistine Chapel.
  2. Midday: leave the museums and eat. One well-reviewed option on Google Maps is Ristorante Pizzeria Castello, open 11 am to 11 pm daily.
  3. Afternoon: walk to Piazza San Pietro for the basilica. Allow time for security.

Be careful with timing at the end of the day. One Google Maps reviewer who arrived near 5 pm wrote that they managed to get round the galleries before closure, but it was a bit of a rush. I’d avoid that pattern and book earlier.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

How much do Vatican church tickets cost?

Vatican church tickets cost nothing for the basilica itself, so the price question really applies to the Sistine Chapel and the museums. Tour listings for museum entry range from about $32 to about $71 in the data I reviewed, depending on what is included.

The table below compares the five most-reviewed options. Prices are the current GetYourGuide listings in US dollars and can change, so check the booking page for the final amount.

Option Price (USD) Rating Reviews Includes a guide?
Museums & Sistine Chapel entrance ticket $36.21 4.48 160,009 No
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica tour (Enjoy Rome) $60.17 4.27 86,949 Yes
Museums, Sistine Chapel & Basilica tour (Crown Tours) $71.31 4.65 19,481 Yes
Skip-the-line entry ticket (Inside Out Italy) $53.48 4.42 19,035 No, host assists at entry
Skip-the-line ticket (Tours And Tours) $32.31 4.23 13,313 No

If you want to compare every ticket type side by side, my homepage guide to Vatican tickets online lays out the options. For this page, the short version is that an entry-only ticket suits you if you want to explore at your own pace, and a guided tour suits you if you want the Sistine Chapel explained.

Entry-only or guided: my advice

An entry-only ticket is my pick if you are comfortable with an audio guide and want flexibility. The first option in the table includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and an audio guide if you select that option, and it excludes a guided tour.

I’d book a guided tour if you want the basilica included in the same plan. Two of the tours above list skip-the-line access to St. Peter’s Basilica as an option, and one lists an upgrade to the basilica featuring the Pietà and Bernini’s Baldachin. Read the inclusions closely, because reviewers on several listings say clearer information about the basilica portion would help.

As one traveler put it about a guided option, the guide made a difference.

Do students get a discount on Vatican church visits?

Student discounts on Vatican church visits exist for the museums. The Vatican Museums offer a reduced ticket for students up to and including 25 years of age who hold a document from their school or university confirming enrollment for the current year.

Be careful here. The official page warns that anyone who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must purchase a new full-price ticket, and the reduced ticket is cancelled and cannot be refunded. Bring the document, not just a student card from home.

Vatican Churches Inside: Photos and What You Can See

Vatican churches inside show sculpture, painting and architecture at both sites, and the museum route is the richest. The official museum menu lists collections such as the Pio Clementino Museum, the Gregorian Egyptian Museum, the Pinacoteca and the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art.

One reviewer on Google Maps said the photos you see online don’t do the place justice. I agree that scale is the thing a photo loses, especially in the basilica nave.

Rules on photography vary by room, so follow the signs and the staff. In the Sistine Chapel in particular, expect staff to ask for quiet and to move people along.

What should you wear and bring?

What to wear is simple: dress for a place of worship. Cover shoulders and knees, and bring a light layer you can put on at the door if you are touring in warm weather.

I’d keep your bag small, because security checks apply at both entrances. Large bags slow you down at the basilica and can cause trouble at the museums. Bring a phone with your ticket loaded, since the listings say mobile or paper vouchers are accepted at the museum entrance.

Which meeting point and entrance is right for you?

Your meeting point and entrance depend on the ticket. Some entry tickets send you straight to the museum entrance, while others ask you to collect them from a partner office nearby.

For example, one listing says to redeem your ticket at Via Germanico, 8 and to arrive 15 minutes before the start, noting that latecomers will not be guaranteed skip-the-line entry. Another meets at an office on Via Mocenigo, about two minutes from the museums exit. Read your voucher the night before so you know which one you have.

Final Plan for Seeing the Vatican Churches

The final plan for the Vatican churches is this: pick the Sistine Chapel for the art and the basilica for the scale, and do not assume one ticket covers both. The basilica is free and open daily, while the chapel needs a museum ticket and is closed on Sundays.

My practical advice: choose your day first, book the museum slot second, and keep the basilica for a walk-in visit when the line is short. If you want a ticket with a skip-the-line entrance, book Vatican tickets from the options above, and read the inclusions before you pay.

For the bigger picture of how the pope, the Holy See and these buildings relate, the Pope & Holy See hub is the best next stop. For a short answer on the main church, see the Vatican church guide. Prices and hours change, so confirm both on the official Vatican Museums site before you travel.
