Can I show a ticket on my phone Vatican staff will accept? Yes, and for most tickets that is the normal way to get in. The official St. Peter’s Basilica help page says to show the QR code “either directly on your electronic device or in printed form,” and the Vatican Museums entry ticket on GetYourGuide accepts “paper and mobile voucher” at the entrance.
The catch is not the phone. The catch is which code you show, to whom, and at which point in the line. I’ll walk you through each entrance, so you know what to open on your screen before you reach the guard.
Mobile Vatican Tickets: What Staff Accept at Each Entrance
Mobile Vatican tickets are accepted at the Museums and at St. Peter’s Basilica and its dome, provided the code you show belongs to the right booking. Every site runs its own check, so one screenshot seldom covers your whole day.
Here is the quick comparison I’d keep in mind. Every row comes from an official page or from the tour details in the brief.
| Where you enter | What to show on your phone | Extra step |
|---|---|---|
| Vatican Museums (GetYourGuide ticket) | Paper or mobile voucher | Scan it at the CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI box office after security |
| St. Peter’s Basilica or Dome | QR code from Email No. 2 | Pass the security checks in St. Peter’s Square first |
| Museums ticket with a host (Via Germanico) | Voucher to redeem for your ticket | Arrive 15 minutes early; the ticket is valid only for the reserved time |
| Castel Sant’Angelo with audio guide | Ticket collected from staff, plus the audio guide app | Charge your phone and bring internet access and headphones |
Notice that a phone shows up in every row, but the job differs. In one case it is your ticket, in another it is the proof you hand to a host, and in the last it is also your audio guide. That is why I tell friends to read the booking email once, before they leave the hotel.

Can I Show a Ticket on My Phone Vatican Museums Guards Check?
Showing a ticket on your phone is fine at the Vatican Museums, where the entrance takes a mobile voucher on the GetYourGuide ticket. The meeting instructions say to go directly to the entrance on Viale Vaticano, use the preferred GetYourGuide entrance and show your ticket to the security guards.

After the security check, you scan your ticket at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI. The same instructions add one firm rule: do not arrive outside your assigned time slot.

Two details matter here. First, the voucher you scan is a booking code, so keep the confirmation email easy to find. Second, the time slot is part of the ticket. If you want the ticket-type basics before you pick a slot, my guide to Vatican Museum ticket types lays out the options.
What the official site says about buying
Buying Vatican Museums tickets online is official only through tickets.museivaticani.va, the one site the Museums name for it. They warn about look-alike domains that “may charge significantly higher prices.” If a site asks you for more than the official price, stop and check the address.
The price page also shows how the money works, and I’d convert it so you can budget in dollars. A full ticket is EUR 20 without online booking, about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 (1.1165 dollars per euro). A reduced ticket is EUR 10, about $11.17, and the reduced ticket with Skip the Line booking is EUR 10 plus EUR 5, about $16.75 in total. Prices change, so confirm them on the official page before you pay.
Digital Entry Vouchers and QR Codes Explained
Digital entry vouchers and QR codes are two different things, and confusing them is the most common phone-ticket mistake. A voucher confirms your purchase, while the QR code is what the gate scans.
For St. Peter’s Basilica and the dome, the official help page describes three emails:
- Email No. 1 arrives right after booking and holds the service confirmation voucher.
- Email No. 2 holds the QR codes for all participants, to be shown during access checks, along with your assigned route (Sobieski or Lambertini).
- Email No. 3 arrives 24 to 14 hours before the visit time and holds a personal code or link for the Digital Audio Guide. Each participant has a different code.
The access QR codes are mandatory. If Email No. 2 does not appear within 30 minutes of booking, check your spam folder, then write to booking@basilicasanpietro.va with your TIE-xxxx or BEE-xxxx reference number.
Lost the QR code on the day?
A lost QR code can still be recovered on the day of your visit. The same page says you can retrieve the access QR codes and the audio guide codes at myqr.basilicasanpietro.va by entering your email and the information from your confirmation voucher. I’d test this link at the hotel, not in the middle of the square.

Can You Show a Phone Ticket at St. Peter’s Dome?
A phone ticket at St. Peter’s Dome works, since the QR code is accepted on your device. Before you reach the dome itself, the official dome FAQ says you must pass the security checks in St. Peter’s Square, and online buyers follow the assigned Sobieski or Lambertini route.
Here is how the pieces fit together for a dome visitor:
- Open Email No. 2 and find the route name.
- Pass security in the square and follow your route.
- Show the QR code, on your phone or on paper, at the Basilica and Dome entrance.
- Plan the Basilica first. The dome ticket includes Basilica entry, to be done 90 minutes before your dome time, plus the Digital Audio Guide.
The visit lasts about one hour on average. The lift goes only as far as the terrace level, then you climb 320 steps to the outer ring. Shoulders and knees must be covered, and only small personal bags are allowed. A phone is fine, a large backpack is not.
What If My Phone Dies or I Have No Signal?
If your phone dies or has no signal, a second copy of every code is your best protection. A flat battery or weak reception in a crowded queue barely matters when the code is already saved and printed.
My advice is simple, and it follows from what the official pages allow:
- Download or screenshot Email No. 2 and the Museums voucher before you leave the hotel.
- Print one copy. The basilica explicitly accepts the QR code “in printed form,” and the Museums entrance accepts a paper voucher.
- Carry a charged power bank. One Rome tour listing even notes a recharging station at its meeting point, which tells you how often phones run low.
- If you booked a Castel Sant’Angelo ticket with a digital audio guide, charge your phone fully and bring headphones, as the meeting instructions ask.
For the rare case where nothing opens, the confirmation email still holds your reference number. For the basilica, that is the number you quote to booking@basilicasanpietro.va. If you would rather talk to a person before the trip, my page on the Vatican ticket office phone number explains the contact options, and you can read whether you can purchase Vatican tickets by phone if a call is how you prefer to book.

Do You Need to Redeem a Phone Voucher Somewhere First?
Redeeming a phone voucher first is sometimes required. A few GetYourGuide listings send you to a meeting point where a host checks your voucher and gives you the entry ticket, so the phone is proof of purchase, not the final ticket.
The brief’s tour details show how different these are:
- One Museums ticket asks you to reach Via Germanico, 8 to redeem your ticket and arrive 15 minutes early. Its ticket is valid only for the reserved time, and latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line entry.
- Another listing asks you to check in at an office at Via Sebastiano Veniero 74, where a host walks you to the entrance and through security.
- A guided Museums tour meets in Piazza del Risorgimento in front of Bar L’Ottagono, and latecomers cannot be accommodated.
Read the meeting section of your booking, because it tells you whether you head straight to the gate or to a host first. Showing your phone at the wrong door is the quickest way to lose your slot. As one traveler put it:
“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
That review is about time, and it is a good reminder of why a correct voucher and a correct meeting point matter.
Can You Enter Vatican City Without a Ticket?
Entering Vatican City without a ticket is possible for some areas, but not for the Museums. St. Peter’s Basilica is described in one tour listing as “free of charge, but access is not guaranteed,” because crowd control can change entry. The Museums and the dome need a booked ticket.
If you want Vatican City tickets that remove the guesswork, this is where a booked ticket helps. You pick a time, get a code, and show it. Walk-up entry also exists: the official page lists a full price “without online booking,” and one reviewer on the Museums said getting tickets was hard online, so they joined a 30 to 40 minute line near closing time and rushed through the galleries.
“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
I would not plan a first visit that way. For a quick basilica stop it can work, and for the Museums I’d book a slot.

Vatican City by the Numbers
Vatican City by the numbers shows why entry rules are strict. The Wikidata record for Vatican City lists these figures:
- Area: 0.44 km². Everything you visit sits inside a very small footprint, so the security checks funnel everyone through the same few entrances.
- Population: 949 in 2024. This is a country of under a thousand residents hosting huge visitor numbers, so timed entry is how it copes.
- Inception: 1929-02-11, the date the modern state was founded.
- Heritage designation: World Heritage Site, which is why conservation rules and bag limits are firm.
- Currency: euro. Official ticket prices are set in euros, which is why I show dollar equivalents above.
How to Book So Your Phone Ticket Just Works
Booking a Vatican phone ticket that just works starts, in my view, with a timed Museums ticket, after which you add the basilica or dome separately, because each has its own code. If you want to compare formats, where to buy Vatican tickets? is the page where I put every ticket type side by side.
For a self-paced visit, the entry tickets below keep it simple. Each has a mobile voucher flow and a meeting point described in its listing.

Many travelers like the 62214 entry ticket because the voucher goes straight to the dedicated entrance. If you want a host to walk you in, the Touristation ticket includes a staff escort from its office to the Museums entrance, and the Via Germanico option asks for redemption 15 minutes early.
For a story along the way, I’d pick a guided option. The two below suit different budgets.

The Inside Out Italy ticket sends you to an office on Via Sebastiano Veniero 74 where a host assists with the security check. The Gray Line I Love Rome tour adds a group guide, a maximum of 20 people, and official Vatican Museums headsets. Either way, the phone is your proof, so keep it charged. You can also browse all Vatican ticket guides if you are still comparing.
Showing a Phone Ticket at the Vatican: My Final Advice
Showing a phone ticket at the Vatican works, and officials will scan it. Save Email No. 2 for the basilica and dome, save the voucher for the Museums, and print one backup of each.
Before you leave the hotel, run this short check:
- Confirm the date and time slot, since a Museums ticket is valid only on the day it is issued and cannot be refunded.
- Find the meeting point in your booking and note whether you go to a gate or to a host.
- Download every code for offline use.
- Cover your shoulders and knees for the basilica and dome.
- Check the official calendar for closures, and remember the Museums are listed as closed on Sundays on the published map listing, with Monday to Saturday hours of 8 am to 8 pm.
If you prefer a human voice, you can also check Vatican Museum tickets by phone, and the phone numbers for Vatican tickets are collected on one page. I am not the official ticket office, so confirm prices and hours on the official sites before you travel.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have to pay to visit the Vatican?
The Vatican Museums charge a full entry ticket of EUR 20 without online booking, and the official page lists a reduced ticket of EUR 10. Entry is free on the last Sunday of the month (subject to the official opening calendar) and for children under 7. St. Peter's Basilica has no entry fee, but the dome needs a paid ticket.
Do the Vatican museum tickets include the Sistine Chapel?
Yes. The official page says the entry ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, but only on the day the ticket is issued. Tickets cannot be refunded, so pick your date carefully.
What day to avoid the Vatican?
The Vatican Museums are listed as closed on Sundays, so plan around that. The exception is the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free and the official calendar decides whether the Museums open. Check that calendar before you build a day around it.
Can I buy Vatican museum tickets at the door?
The official price page lists a EUR 20 full ticket "without online booking", so a walk-up purchase exists. A traveler on a Museums review reported a 30 to 40 minute wait to buy at around 5 pm, so booking ahead saves time.
