When does the Vatican close?

By Updated 11 min read

When does the Vatican close depends on the site: the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are listed as open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, while St. Peter's Basilica is listed until 7:10 pm every day. The Museums are closed on Sundays, so plan around that first.

When does the Vatican close? It depends on which part you mean. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are listed as open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, and St. Peter’s Basilica is listed until 7:10 pm every day of the week.

I wrote this page to take the guesswork out of that question. Below you will find the closing time for each major site, what the Sunday rule means, which holidays to watch, and how to avoid the classic mistake of arriving too late to see what you came for. For the wider picture of how the whole area fits together, my guide to Vatican and Rome is a good companion.

When Does the Vatican Close? The Short Answer

Vatican closing time is 8 pm for the Museums and the Sistine Chapel Monday to Saturday, while St. Peter’s Basilica shuts at 7:10 pm daily, going by the published listing hours. The Museums and Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays.

Two things matter more than the closing time itself. First, “closing” is not the same as “last entry”. Visitors need time inside, so the real cut-off for starting your visit is hours earlier. Second, the Vatican has its own holiday calendar, and it does not match the Italian one. I cover both points below.

Prices and hours change, so always confirm your date on the official Vatican Museums website. The homepage shows whether the Museums are open or closed right now and links to its opening hours and temporary closures page.

Notice the difference between the two buildings. The Basilica is a working church, and its doors are open every day. The Museums are a separate institution with their own staff, tickets and calendar. That is why one can be open while the other is shut. If you want the single-line version for the whole city-state, see the exact closing time for the Vatican in my companion guide.

When Do the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Close?

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel close at 8 pm Monday to Saturday and stay shut on Sunday, according to the listed weekly hours. The chapel has no separate door of its own; you reach it at the end of a long route through the galleries.

That route is the reason late arrivals go wrong. The collections include the Pio Clementino Museum, the Chiaramonti Museum, the Pinacoteca, the Raphael’s Rooms and the Borgia Apartment, all named on the official museums page. You will not see them all in a rush, and you should not try.

One traveler described exactly this squeeze:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That review is a good warning. They arrived around 5 pm, queued for tickets and “managed to get round the galleries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.” I would not plan a late visit this way. If you must go in the evening, book a timed ticket ahead so the queue for tickets is not the thing that eats your time. For the time of day itself, see my page on the closing time at the Vatican Museums.

How Timed Tickets Change Your Closing Time

Timed tickets assign you an entry slot, and that slot is your real start time. The most popular skip-the-line option in the brief, the Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket, asks you to go to the entrance on Viale Vaticano and “not arrive outside your assigned time slot.” That rule means a late arrival can cost you the ticket, not just an hour.

My advice: pick the earliest slot you can manage. You get the quietest galleries and a large safety margin before the evening cut-off.

When Does St. Peter’s Basilica Close?

St. Peter’s Basilica closes at 7:10 pm, with listed hours of 7 am to 7:10 pm every day, which is about an hour before the Museums on weekdays and Saturdays. It is also the one big Vatican site open to visitors on a Sunday.

The Basilica opens early, and that works in your favor. One reviewer wrote:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

Their point is sound. Arriving at the opening time beats arriving near closing, because security lines build up as the day goes on. Plan your Basilica visit for the first hours, then use the late afternoon for the Museums or a walk through the square.

The basilica’s own website, basilicasanpietro.va, is where I would check live notices. Special ceremonies can change when visitors are admitted, and I would not rely on a printed time from last year.

What About the Dome?

The dome climb is separate and needs its own ticket, and several tours offer it as an add-on. One option in the brief notes the climb ends at a view from 136 meters over St. Peter’s Square and Rome. The dome’s hours are not given in the sources I use here, so I will not guess them. Check the Basilica site before you commit to a late climb.

Is the Vatican Closed on Sundays?

The Vatican is closed on Sundays only in part: the Museums and Sistine Chapel shut, while St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peter’s Square stay open. That split is the single most useful thing to know before you book flights or a hotel, because when does the Vatican close for the week is answered by Saturday evening for the Museums.

If your only free day is a Sunday, you still have a good plan. Visit the Basilica in the morning, walk the square, then spend the afternoon elsewhere in Rome. The Museums can wait for a weekday. If you want to see the Sistine Chapel, treat Monday to Saturday as your window.

For ticket planning, it also helps to know that a Sunday closure makes Saturday slots busier. Many visitors cram into the last open day before the break. I would book Saturday earlier than any other day, and I explain how far ahead in when to book Vatican tickets.

Which Holidays Change Vatican Closing Hours?

Vatican holidays follow the city-state’s own public holiday list, and several dates on it are likely to affect visiting hours. The 2026 Vatican list includes January 1, January 6, February 11, March 19, April 6, April 23, May 1, June 29, August 15, September 8, November 1, December 8, December 25 and December 26, as published by the Nager.Date holiday API.

That list is a public holiday list, not a closure schedule. A holiday does not automatically mean every door is shut. What it does mean is that you should check the date before you go. Use the official hours and temporary closures page for the final answer on any specific day.

Here are the holidays I would watch closest for travelers right now, since today is early November 2026:

  • December 8 (Immaculate Conception): a Vatican and Italian holiday, so expect altered schedules and crowds.
  • December 25 and 26 (Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day): both are on the Vatican and Italian lists.
  • January 1 and January 6, 2027: both repeat on the 2027 Vatican list.

The Italian national list adds days the Vatican does not share, such as Liberation Day on April 25 and Republic Day on June 2. Rome may feel quiet on those days, but the Vatican calendar is the one that matters for your ticket.

How Early Should You Arrive Before the Vatican Closes?

Arrive before the Vatican closes with a wide margin, because new arrivals are cut off in practice hours before the posted time. Several hours of buffer is the minimum, and the morning is ideal. The Museums are large, the route is long, and the end of the day is when security and ticket queues cause the most trouble.

Here is the rule of thumb I give friends:

  1. Museums and Sistine Chapel: book an early or mid-morning slot. Leave the evening for a second, lighter visit only if you have more time.
  2. St. Peter’s Basilica: go at opening time, from 7 am, when the line moves faster.
  3. Anything with a meeting point: show up at the time the tour operator states. One guided option asks you to be at the entrance on Viale Vaticano 30 minutes before the scheduled time, and the Basilica add-ons ask for around 15 minutes.

If you want a guide to keep you on pace, the tours below are the ones I would compare. They differ in what they include, so read the inclusions before you choose.

I recommend booking a timed slot rather than hoping to walk in near closing time. If you want to see every option side by side, compare Vatican tickets in one place, then pick the slot that leaves you the most room before the doors close.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers is a short list because the state is tiny, which is why closing times at its main sites matter so much: everyone arrives together in one small area. These facts come from Wikidata:

The time zone line is the one I would underline. A closing time of 8 pm means 8 pm in Rome, which is easy to forget if you booked from another country.

Closing Hours and Your Ticket Choice

Your Vatican ticket choice decides how much of your day you can actually use before closing time. Entry-only tickets give you the most freedom, guided tours give you the most structure, and Basilica tours depend on a fixed meeting time.

For the Museums, the choice comes down to two styles:

  • Entrance ticket with audio guide option: you explore alone at your chosen time and pick up your audio guide at the dedicated desk inside.
  • Guided tour with an official Vatican guide: you meet the guide inside under the guided-tour sign, and the visit follows the guide’s pace.

For St. Peter’s Basilica, the tours I would compare are these:

If you are unsure when to purchase, my page on buying Vatican tickets at the right time covers it, and the question of when are Vatican tickets released? is answered separately, along with when the Vatican releases tickets in the first place.

Plan Your Day Around Vatican Closing Time

Vatican closing time is the best anchor for your own plan: start from it and work backward. Pick your day, pick the site, and then leave a wide margin.

Here is my short plan:

  • Monday to Saturday: Basilica at 7 am, Museums at a mid-morning timed slot, lunch outside the walls.
  • Sunday: Basilica and square only, then something else in Rome.
  • Holiday weeks: confirm each date on the official pages before you pay for anything.

For the broader view of what to see and how long to stay, the Visiting the Vatican hub collects every planning question in one place. For the exact evening cut-off for the whole city-state, the page on Vatican City’s closing time gives the short version.

Last, remember that closing times are only half of the story. A relaxed visit needs an early start, a timed ticket and a check of the official calendar. Do those three things and the question of when does the Vatican close stops being a source of stress.

Frequently asked questions

Can you go into Vatican City on a Sunday?

Yes, but only part of it. St. Peter's Basilica is listed as open on Sundays from 7 am to 7:10 pm, and St. Peter's Square is an open public space. The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are listed as closed on Sundays, so check the official site before you plan around them.

Is the Vatican Museum open on Sunday?

The listed weekly hours show the Vatican Museums as closed on Sundays and open 8 am to 8 pm the other six days. Exceptions can exist, so confirm the date you want on the official Vatican Museums hours page before you travel.

When does the Sistine Chapel close?

The Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums route, and its listed hours are 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday. Because you walk through the galleries to reach it, aim to start your visit well before the end of the day.

Does the Vatican City close at night?

The Museums and the Basilica stop receiving visitors in the evening, with the Basilica listed until 7:10 pm and the Museums until 8 pm on open days. Vatican City is a small sovereign state with about 949 residents, so it is not a free-roaming public park after those hours.
