How much does it cost to tour the Vatican? The honest range is about $22 for the official Vatican Museums ticket up to about $77 for a guided tour that adds the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. Where you land depends on three choices: official ticket or reseller, self-guided or guided, and whether you pay extra to skip the line.

I’m Giulia, and I’ll walk you through each price, what it includes and where people overspend. Prices and hours change, so confirm them on the official site before you pay.

Vatican Tour Prices Explained: The Short Version

Vatican tour prices are lowest with the official self-guided ticket at EUR 20, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. A guided tour with skip-the-line entry costs more, and the listings I checked run from about $60 to about $77.

Here is how the main options stack up in plain terms:

  • Official ticket, no booking: EUR 20 (about $22). You queue on the day.
  • Self-guided skip-the-line ticket from a reseller: about $36 in the listing I reviewed, with a time slot and fast entry.
  • Guided Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica tour: about $60 to $77 per person, with a guide.

If you want one place to compare every ticket type side by side, start with Vatican tickets and filter by what you need.

What Does an Official Vatican Museums Ticket Cost?

An official Vatican Museums ticket costs EUR 20 at full price without online booking, which is about $22. The reduced ticket is EUR 10 (about $11), per the official prices page.

Visitors in a Vatican Museums gallery, showing how much it costs to tour the VaticanBook aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36

That one ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, but only on the day it is issued. The museums also state that tickets cannot be refunded, so pick your date carefully.

Booking a “Skip the Line” slot on the official site adds a fee. For the reduced ticket the page lists EUR 10 plus EUR 5, so EUR 15 total, about $17. Check the portal for the exact total on a full-price ticket, because fees can change.

My advice: if your dates are fixed and you hate queues, pay the small booking fee. The Vatican Museum tickets guide shows how the official slots work and what to do when they sell out.

Vatican Entry Ticket Costs at a Glance

Vatican entry ticket costs are laid out in the table below, covering every official price I could confirm, with dollar conversions at the ECB rate of 2026-11-06 (EUR 1 = $1.1165). The dollar figures are estimates, since your card rate will differ.

Ticket Without online booking With “Skip the Line” booking Notes
Full entry EUR 20 (about $22) Check the official portal Museums and Sistine Chapel, same day only
Reduced entry EUR 10 (about $11) EUR 15 (about $17) Reduced rate for eligible visitors
Students EUR 10 (about $11) EUR 15 (about $17) Proof of student status needed
Schools EUR 5 (about $6) EUR 7 (about $8) For school groups
Papal Palace and Secret Garden, Castel Gandolfo EUR 12 (about $13) Not listed Separate site outside Vatican City
Children under 7 Free Free See the free-entry rules below

Look at the “Notes” column before you buy. A cheaper ticket is not a better deal if it does not fit your day. Students, for example, should read the official student ticket rules first.

Who Gets Into the Vatican for Free?

Free entry to the Vatican goes to four groups at the Museums: children under 7, visitors on the last Sunday of the month, certain heritage professionals, and visitors with a certified disability of at least 67%. Those rules come from the official tickets page.

The last-Sunday offer depends on the official calendar of openings and closures, so check it before you plan around that day. Free tickets for disabled visitors cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, and the visitor and a companion get priority skip-the-line entry.

St. Peter’s Basilica is a different story. Entering it is free of charge, though access is not guaranteed because crowd control can limit it. One visitor wrote:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

I like that quote because it is honest about trade-offs. The visit is free, but the security line is the cost, and the dome and other extras are paid.

How Much Does It Cost to Tour the Vatican With a Guide?

A guided Vatican tour costs about $55 to $77 per person across the listings I reviewed, roughly two to three times the official ticket. The price usually bundles the entry ticket, a guide and skip-the-line access.

Here is what the listings show:

Tips for guides are not included in these listings, so budget a little extra if you want to tip. The listings also exclude transport to the meeting point.

If you want the story behind the art, a guide is where the money goes. If you just want to see the Sistine Chapel, a self-guided ticket is cheaper.

Is the Vatican Tour Worth It?

The Vatican tour is worth it for most first-time visitors, and the cheapest decent option is usually a self-guided ticket with a fixed time slot. Pay extra for a guided tour if you want context and a simpler route.

Reviewers on the listings are generally positive. Travelers praise knowledgeable guides and time saved by skipping the line. The complaints are small: some find the audio headsets hard to hear, and others want clearer directions to the right queue.

One visitor on the self-guided ticket put it simply:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
Sukanta, Ireland, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

My call: book a self-guided ticket if you already know what you want to see. Book a guide if you want the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica in one connected visit.

How Long Does It Take to Tour the Vatican?

A Vatican tour takes 2 to 3 hours when guided, since the listings I reviewed run 2 to 3 hours or 3 hours. A self-guided ticket has no set length, so you can stay until the Museums close.

The Maps data lists the Museums and the Sistine Chapel open 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday, while St. Peter’s Basilica shows 7 am to 7:10 pm every day. Confirm today’s hours on the official site, because closures happen on church holidays.

Time matters for cost because a late arrival can waste a paid slot. One reseller states the ticket is valid only for the reserved time and that latecomers may lose skip-the-line access. Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early whatever you book.

What Does a Self-Guided Skip-the-Line Ticket Include?

A self-guided skip-the-line ticket from a reseller costs more than the official EUR 20 entry because you are buying time and convenience. The listing at about $36 includes skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Vatican Museums, the booking fee and an audio guide if you select that option.

It does not include a guided tour, a ticket to the St. Peter’s Basilica dome, or guaranteed Basilica access. You enter at your assigned time, show your voucher at the dedicated entrance, then scan it at the box office after the security check. The listing says plainly not to arrive outside your slot.

Another self-guided option sells a similar skip-the-line ticket and a host who walks you to the Museum entrance. Its meeting point is on Via Germanico, and the listing asks you to arrive 15 minutes early. It excludes the Basilica, the dome and a guide.

The difference between the official ticket and these listings is mostly the markup for convenience. If you can get an official slot on the date you want, it is the cheaper route. If not, a reseller ticket is a fair way to avoid a wasted day.

Which Option Fits Which Traveler?

  • Budget solo traveler: the official ticket, booked early.
  • Families with young children: children under 7 enter free, so a guide is optional.
  • First-timers who want context: a guided tour with the Basilica option.
  • Travelers with limited time: a timed, skip-the-line slot of any kind.
  • Visitors with a disability: the free desk entry with priority skip-the-line access described above.

The right Vatican option depends on the traveler, and a guide is a choice, not a requirement. One reviewer who could not take a guided tour because of a wheelchair did the visit alone with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights.

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

What Else Can Raise the Price of a Vatican Tour?

Extra Vatican tour costs come from the St. Peter’s Basilica dome, guide tips, transport to the meeting point and food. The entry price covers none of these, and the tour data lists the dome as an add-on.

The bigger risk is paying too much for the same entry. The Vatican Museums warn that look-alike websites may charge much higher prices, and the only official online ticket site is tickets.museivaticani.va. If a site is not that address, stop.

The dress code can also cost you a visit if you ignore it. The official visitor advice bans sleeveless or low-cut clothing, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats. Bags and rucksacks that are too large must be left in the cloakroom, which is free.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City facts from Wikidata show how small the place is and explain why tickets, queues and security work the way they do:

  • Area: 0.44 km². Everything you tour sits in a very small space, so the cost is about access, not distance.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, when the modern city-state began. The Museums and the Basilica are far older.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. That is why entry is controlled and preservation rules are strict.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Almost every visitor you meet is a tourist or a pilgrim.
  • Currency: euro. Official prices are in euros, so expect conversion on your card.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Most visitor information is also given in English.

As Wikipedia describes it, Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe, ruled by the pope and surrounded by Rome.

A Practical Plan for Touring the Vatican on Your Budget

Touring the Vatican on a budget comes down to these numbers: EUR 20 (about $22) for the official ticket, EUR 15 (about $17) for a reduced ticket with a booked slot, and about $55 to $77 for a guided tour. My rule is simple. Pay the official price if you want the lowest cost and can book early, and pay a reseller if the official slots are gone or you want a guide.

Here is how I’d decide:

  1. Decide whether you want a guide. If not, choose a self-guided ticket.
  2. Check the official site for your date, then compare it with the tours above.
  3. Dress for the rules: covered shoulders and knees, no hat.
  4. Arrive early and keep your confirmation handy.

If you are still unsure what to book, you can book Vatican tickets online and compare time slots, inclusions and reviews in one place. And for a closer look at ticket prices alone, what Vatican tickets cost goes deeper. For more planning help, browse the Vatican tickets hub.

I’m an independent guide, not the official ticket office, so I can’t sell you an official ticket. What I can do is help you choose the right one before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official website of the Vatican museums?

The only official site for buying Vatican Museums tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va. The museums warn that look-alike domains may charge much higher prices, so always check the address before you pay.

Can I wear jeans to Vatican?

The official visitor rules do not ban jeans by name. They do ban sleeveless or low-cut tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats, so long jeans with a covered top meet the written rules.

What day to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sunday if you want to see the Museums, because the Maps listing shows them closed. The last Sunday of each month is free entry when the museums are open, so expect that day to be busy; check the official closure calendar first.

How much does it cost to visit the Sistine Chapel?

The Sistine Chapel has no separate ticket. The Vatican Museums entry ticket, EUR 20 without online booking (about $22), covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued.

Is St. Peter's Basilica free to enter?

Entering St. Peter's Basilica is free of charge, but access is not guaranteed and can change with crowd control. Extras such as the dome are not part of the free visit.
