Vatican Tickets Official Online

By Updated 11 min read

Vatican tickets official online are sold on one site only: tickets.museivaticani.va, the portal run by the Vatican Museums. Full entry costs EUR 20 without booking, and a reduced skip-the-line slot adds EUR 5, so any site charging far more is a reseller or a scam.

Vatican tickets official online come from exactly one place: the portal at tickets.museivaticani.va. The Vatican Museums say it is the only official site for purchasing tickets online, and they warn about look-alike domains that charge much higher prices.

Searching for vatican tickets official online should end at that address, not at a reseller’s ad. I wrote this guide to settle one problem: which website is real, what the real price is, and when a reseller is a sensible choice instead. I am an independent writer, and this site is not the ticket office.

Which Site Sells Official Vatican Tickets Online?

Official Vatican tickets online are sold by the Vatican Museums’ own portal, tickets.museivaticani.va. The Museums say it is the only official site for buying tickets online, and they urge visitors to confirm they are buying through that portal.

The official page also warns about websites that use domains similar to the official one, which may charge significantly higher prices. My rule is simple. Type the address yourself, look for the .va ending, and never click a sponsored link that only looks official.

The Vatican has its own top-level domain, and Wikidata lists it as .va. That is a handy check. A page with a different ending can still be a legitimate reseller, but it is not the Vatican’s own ticket office.

What the Official Ticket Covers

The official ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and it is valid only on the day it is issued. The Museums also state that tickets cannot be refunded. That matters when you choose a date, so be sure of your plans before you pay.

Two things are not part of that ticket. St. Peter’s Basilica is a separate site with its own official website, and the dome and other extras are sold separately. If you want the basics of the museum ticket itself, my page on Vatican Museum tickets goes through every gallery on the route.

Official Vatican Museums Entry Tickets Explained

Official Vatican Museums entry tickets come down to three things: the base price, the optional skip-the-line booking, and who qualifies for a reduced rate. The table below takes its numbers from the official price page and converts them at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 (EUR 1 = $1.1165).

Visitors queuing at the entrance of the Vatican Museums with timed online ticketsBook aheadVatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-the-Line Entry TicketCheck availability · from $53
Ticket type Official price About in USD
Full entry (no online booking) EUR 20.00 $22.33
Reduced entry (no online booking) EUR 10.00 $11.17
Reduced entry with skip-the-line booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 $16.75
Students (no online booking) EUR 10.00 $11.17
Students with skip-the-line booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 $16.75
Schools (no online booking) EUR 5.00 $5.58
Schools with skip-the-line booking EUR 5.00 + 2.00 $7.82

Dollar figures are my conversions, rounded to the cent. Your card issuer’s rate will differ a little. Prices and rules change, so confirm them on the official price page before you buy.

Who Gets a Reduced Rate

A reduced rate depends on proof. Pilgrimage groups, for example, need a letter of request from their parish, institute or diocese, stamped and signed, with the names of the participants.

The Museums also say that anyone who buys a reduced ticket without entitlement must buy a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket is cancelled and not refunded. My advice: do not guess on this one. If you are not sure you qualify, buy the full price.

Free Entry Rules

Free entry is real but narrow. The official list includes the last Sunday of the month (subject to the Museums’ calendar of openings and closures), children below the age of 7, and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%.

Free tickets for disabled visitors and their companions cannot be booked online. They are issued at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, and those visitors get priority skip-the-line entry, according to the official price page.

Vatican Tickets Official Online by the Numbers

Vatican tickets official online draw many look-alike websites to one small state, and a few figures show why. They come from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². The state is tiny, so the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica are all within walking distance, but not behind one shared entrance.
  • Established: 1929-02-11. This is the date of the modern city-state, which is why the ticket rules are the Vatican’s own and not Italy’s.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site. The site’s protected status is one reason visitor numbers are managed with timed slots.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Fewer than a thousand residents, which means almost everyone you meet in line is a visitor.
  • Currency: euro. Official prices are in euros, so card payments from US banks may add a foreign-transaction fee. Check with your issuer.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. The portal is available in English too, as far as the Museums’ pages go for visitors.
  • Internet domain: .va. The one detail I tell every first-time buyer to check.

Can You Buy Tickets at the Vatican?

You can buy tickets at the Vatican itself. The official price page lists the full ticket at EUR 20.00 “without online booking”, which means a purchase at the entrance is allowed. The catch is the wait, and the lack of a guaranteed slot.

One traveler’s review at the ticket hall captures the risk well:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

I read that as a warning, not a rule. Walk-up buying can work late in the day, but you then have little time before closing. Maps data lists the Museums as open 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and closed Sunday, but the Museums’ own calendar of openings and closures is the authority.

Is the Official Portal Always the Best Choice?

The official portal is not always the best choice, but it is the right answer when you want plain museum entry at the lowest listed price and you have a firm date. I recommend it first.

A reseller makes sense when you want a host at the meeting point, an audio guide, a guided option, or the Basilica combined into the same booking. You pay more, and you should know what you are paying for. Many of the tours below are escorted entry or guided visits, not a different kind of Vatican ticket.

I’d book the official portal if you only need the entry. I’d book a reseller if you want help on the day.

What Resellers Include

What resellers include varies by listing. The tours in the block below come from GetYourGuide, and I link them because I earn a commission if you book. They are not the Vatican’s ticket office. The details I can confirm from the listings:

  • The “Entrance Ticket” listing includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and a booking fee, with an audio guide if you pick that option. It excludes a guided tour and the dome.
  • The “Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket” listing from Inside Out Italy includes a host who escorts you to the Museums’ entrance. It excludes a tour guide.
  • The “Fast Entry Ticket with Optional Guide” lists an official Vatican guide only when you choose the guided option.
  • The “Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museums and Basilica Entry” listing includes a licensed guide for the Museums and headsets. It excludes a guided tour of the Basilica.

If you want a longer comparison of ticket types, my guide to skip-the-line Vatican tickets on the homepage lays them out side by side.

How to Spot a Fake Site Selling Vatican Tickets Official Online

A fake site selling Vatican tickets while posing as the official online seller usually fails one of three checks: the address, the price, and the wording. I use all three, in that order.

  1. Check the address. The official portal is tickets.museivaticani.va. If the address bar says something else, ask whether you are on the Vatican’s page or on a reseller.
  2. Compare the price. The official full ticket is EUR 20.00 and the skip-the-line add-on for reduced tickets is EUR 5.00. A price several times higher is a reseller bundle or an overcharge, and the Museums warn that look-alike sites may charge significantly higher prices.
  3. Read what is included. A tour with a guide, a host or an audio guide costs more because it includes a service. That is not a scam, but it is not the official museum ticket either.

My own page on the official Vatican tickets online website goes deeper on how to read the address and the checkout.

What Do the Official Site and a Reseller Cost Side by Side?

Official site and reseller costs differ clearly. The official page lists EUR 20.00 for a full ticket, about $22.33 at the ECB rate above. The GetYourGuide listings in this guide are priced in US dollars and include different services:

  • Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket, from $36.21: skip-the-ticket-line entry and a booking fee.
  • Skip-The-Line Ticket (Tours And Tours), from $32.31: a host to the entrance, with redemption at Via Germanico 8.
  • Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket (Inside Out Italy), from $53.48: a host escorts you from Via Sebastiano Veniero 74.
  • Fast Entry Ticket with Optional Guide, from $89.03: a guided option is available.
  • Museums, Sistine Chapel and Basilica Entry, from $67.97: a licensed guide and headsets.

These are the prices in the listing data at the time I wrote this page, and they vary with date and option. I would not call any of them “the official price”. The official price is the one on the Vatican’s portal.

Where Do You Show Your Ticket?

You show your ticket at the Museums’ entrance on Viale Vaticano. The GetYourGuide entrance listing says to show your voucher to the security guards, then scan it at the box office marked CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after the security check. Paper and mobile vouchers are accepted there.

Some resellers use their own meeting points. One listing meets at Via Germanico 8 and asks you to arrive 15 minutes early. Another meets at Via Vespasiano 26, a 10-minute walk from the Ottaviano metro stop, and says St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point. Read your voucher twice.

Here is how a recent traveler described a smooth start:

“Met at the meeting point, 5 minutes before our time slot we walked over to the queue which went down very quickly and within 20 minutes we were inside”
Amy, United Kingdom, 2026-09 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums: Fast Entry Ticket with Optional Guide

Timed tickets are strict. One listing notes that latecomers are not guaranteed skip-the-line access, so plan to arrive early.

Do Vatican Tickets Official Online Cover St. Peter’s Basilica?

Vatican tickets official online do not cover St. Peter’s Basilica. A Museums ticket leaves it out, and several listings say so in their exclusions. The Basilica is a separate site with its own official website.

Maps data lists the Basilica as open 7 am to 7:10 pm every day, but opening times can change for services and events, so check the official site on your date. The listing for the combined guided visit also says the Basilica portion is not a guided Basilica tour. If the Basilica is your priority, read my page on the Vatican City ticket options before you pick a date.

Booking Checklist: My Advice Before You Pay

My booking checklist is worth running before you buy vatican tickets official online. Here is the order I use when I help a friend plan.

  1. Choose the date first, and check it against the Museums’ official calendar. Sundays are normally closed, with the last Sunday of the month free subject to that calendar.
  2. Decide whether you want entry only or help on the day. Entry only: official portal. Help: a reseller.
  3. Confirm the price in euros on the official page, then convert it. At the current ECB rate, EUR 20 is about $22.33.
  4. Remember the ticket is not refundable and is valid only on the day issued.
  5. Screenshot or print your voucher, and read the meeting point twice.

If you decide a reseller is right for you, you can book Vatican tickets online and compare the options side by side. You can also browse every ticket type in the Vatican tickets topic hub.

Final Advice on Vatican Tickets Official Online

Final advice on Vatican tickets official online comes down to this: buy from tickets.museivaticani.va if you want the plain entry at the lowest listed price, and treat every other site as a reseller that charges for a service. If you are unsure, compare the official-site rules with the tour listings above before you pay.

Prices, hours and closures change, so confirm everything on the official ticket page on the day you book. A few minutes of checking the address saves real money.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to visit the Vatican Museums?

The official price list shows a full ticket at EUR 20.00 without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. Reduced tickets are EUR 10.00, or EUR 10.00 plus EUR 5.00 with the skip-the-line booking. Check the official page before you pay, because prices can change.

Can I enter the Sistine Chapel for free?

The Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums visit, so it follows the museum's free-entry rules. Those include the last Sunday of the month (subject to the official calendar), children below age 7, and visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%. Everyone else needs a ticket.

What day to avoid the Vatican?

I would avoid the free last Sunday of the month if you hate crowds, because free entry is on offer that day. The museums are otherwise listed as closed on Sundays and open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday. Always check the official calendar of openings and closures for your date.

How to visit the Vatican?

Pick your day, buy a timed Vatican Museums ticket on the official portal or from a trusted reseller, and arrive shortly before your slot. The Museums end in the Sistine Chapel. St. Peter's Basilica has its own entrance and its own opening hours.
