Vatican Citty

By Updated 13 min read

Vatican citty is a common misspelling of Vatican City, the sovereign city-state ruled by the pope and surrounded entirely by Rome. You can walk in for free, but the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel need a timed ticket.

Vatican citty is how many travelers type the name of the smallest country on earth, and the correct spelling is Vatican City. It is a walled enclave in the middle of Rome, and it holds St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. I wrote this page to explain what Vatican City is, where it sits, what it costs to see and how to plan the visit without wasting a day in a queue.

The short version: you can enter the state itself for free, but the Museums and the Sistine Chapel are ticketed with timed entry. The rest of this guide shows how the pieces fit together.

What Is Vatican Citty? Vatican City Explained

Vatican citty, properly spelled Vatican City, carries the official name Vatican City State, and Wikipedia describes it as a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe that the pope rules and the city of Rome surrounds. It also serves as the administrative center of the Catholic Church.

The state is not the same thing as the Holy See. The Holy See is the central authority of the Church worldwide, and it governs Vatican City. The pope is elected by the College of Cardinals through conclaves, and the state is an absolute monarchy under him.

Here are the points I find travelers most often mix up:

  • Vatican City is the territory you walk into: the square, the Basilica, the Museums and the gardens.
  • The Holy See is the sovereign entity that governs it and keeps diplomatic relations with 180 states.
  • The Vatican Museums are the art collections inside the state, and they are run separately from the Basilica, with their own ticket office.

The modern state dates to the Lateran Treaty of 11 February 1929, which settled the “Roman question” after Italy captured Rome in 1870. The name comes from Vatican Hill, which in turn comes from an Etruscan settlement called Vatica or Vaticum. The Italian name is Città del Vaticano, which is probably where the extra “t” in the typo comes from.

Is Rome Part of the Vatican City?

Rome is not part of Vatican City, because Vatican City is an enclave inside Rome. The two are separate jurisdictions, and Rome wraps around the smaller state on every side.

For a visitor that means two things. First, you do not need a passport stamp or a visa to step from Rome into the state, because the border is open at St. Peter’s Square. Second, Vatican City is a de facto member of the Schengen Area and uses the euro, so money and travel rules feel the same as in Italy. If you want the full picture of how the two fit together, my guide on where the Vatican sits inside Rome goes street by street.

Why a country sits inside a city

A country inside a city exists because of the 1929 settlement. For centuries the popes ruled the Papal States, which formed on the Italian Peninsula after a donation of Frankish territory in 756. After 1870 the pope declared himself a “prisoner in the Vatican,” and the Lateran Treaty ended that standoff by creating the small state you can visit today.

Where Is Vatican Citty on the Map?

Vatican citty sits on the west bank of the Tiber, in the northwest part of central Rome. Wikidata gives its coordinates as 41.904, 12.453, and the Basilica’s address is Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano.

Three entrances matter, and they are not next to each other:

  1. St. Peter’s Square is where the free Basilica line starts. The Basilica’s address and map pin mark the Basilica side.
  2. The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano. Tour listings for the Museums tell you to go directly to this entrance, and it is a long walk around the wall from the Square.
  3. The Ottaviano metro stop on Line A is the closest station for the Museums. One tour provider notes that it is about a 10-minute walk from their meeting point, and that St. Peter’s Square is not their meeting point.

I recommend you decide which of the two main sights comes first, because walking between the Square and the Museums entrance eats time you will want inside.

Vatican Citty by the Numbers

Vatican citty by the numbers shows a tiny state, and the figures below come from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City. Each one tells you something useful for planning.

  • Area: 0.44 km². You can cross the whole state on foot, and the walking you do is mostly inside the Museums, not between sights.
  • Population: 949 (2024). It is the least populous country in the world, so almost everyone you see in the square is a visitor.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929. The Lateran Treaty date is the start of the modern state.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The whole state is listed, which is why photography and dress rules are enforced.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros at the cafes and gift shops.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and guides in English are common at the sights.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope is the sovereign, and papal events can change which areas are open.

The small area is also why crowd control matters so much. Everyone shares a few entrances, so the entrances are where queues form.

What Can You See at the Vatican for Free?

What you can see at the Vatican for free is St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica. Basilica entry costs nothing, but one tour listing warns that access is not guaranteed and may vary with crowd control.

The Basilica is open daily, listed on Google Maps as 7 am to 7:10 pm, so check the Basilica’s official site for the current hours on the day you go. One reviewer called it “the most beautiful church I’ve ever been to” and added that a visit with no extra tickets can be done in about 40 minutes:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

Free does not cover everything. The dome, the Museums and the Sistine Chapel need separate access, and the dome is excluded from basic museum tickets. If you want to confirm the rules before you queue, I wrote a separate answer on whether St. Peter’s Basilica is free.

Free versus paid at a glance

Sight Cost to enter What to know
St. Peter’s Square Free Open space, the start of the Basilica line
St. Peter’s Basilica Free Access can change with crowd control
Basilica dome Paid Not included in a basic museum ticket
Vatican Museums Paid Timed entry; closed on Sundays per Google Maps listing
Sistine Chapel Paid Reached through the Museums, same ticket

Free versus paid sights matter for planning, and I would not build a first visit around the free part only. The Museums are where the art is, and they are the reason most people travel here.

How Much Do Vatican Tickets Cost?

Vatican tickets cost about $36 at the low end on GetYourGuide for a Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket for the standard skip-the-line entrance, and guided tours ran higher. Prices change with the season and the option you pick, so treat these as rough numbers and confirm the current figure on the official Vatican Museums website.

The listing prices I found when I wrote this page:

  • A basic entrance ticket: about $32 to $36 per person.
  • A skip-the-line entry with a host to meet you: about $53.
  • A guided tour of the Museums and Sistine Chapel with the Basilica: about $60 to $71.

Official reduced tickets exist, too. The Museums’ website says the student rate is reserved for students up to and including 25 years of age with a document confirming enrollment. If you buy a reduced ticket without entitlement, you must buy a new full-price ticket, and the first one is cancelled with no refund.

My view: if you want one safe, simple option, pick a timed entry ticket and arrive on time. If you want the stories behind the art, pick a guided tour. For a side-by-side look at every type, you can see which Vatican tickets to book before you choose.

Vatican Citty Opening Days and Hours

Vatican citty opening days for the Vatican Museums run Monday through Saturday, with Sunday closed, according to the Google Maps listing, which shows 8 am to 8 pm on open days. Opening hours and temporary closures are published by the Vatican Museums, so check the official hours page before you fix a date.

The Sistine Chapel is reached through the Museums, so it follows the same days. St. Peter’s Basilica is the exception: the Maps listing shows it open every day of the week, including Sunday. That makes Sunday the natural day for the Basilica and the square, and a weekday the natural day for the Museums.

My guide to Vatican Museum opening hours covers the schedule in detail, including last-entry rules and closure days.

Why timing matters more than the date

Timing matters more than the date, as one reviewer on the Museums’ Google Maps page showed when they said they arrived around 5 pm and waited 30 to 40 minutes for tickets, then rushed through the galleries before closing:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That is the exact problem a timed ticket solves. If you buy ahead, you pick a slot, you skip the ticket queue, and you spend the hours inside the galleries.

How to Visit Vatican Citty in One Day

The best way to visit Vatican citty in one day is to book a timed Museums and Sistine Chapel ticket for the morning, then see the free Basilica afterward. This order works because the Museums have a fixed slot and the Basilica does not.

Here is the order I would follow:

  1. Book the Museums slot first. Choose the earliest time you can manage and arrive 15 minutes before it. One provider states that the ticket is valid only for the reserved time and that latecomers are not guaranteed entry.
  2. Walk through the Museums to the Sistine Chapel. The collections hold works by artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael, and the Chapel ceiling includes “The Creation of Adam.”
  3. Leave by the Chapel exit and head to St. Peter’s Square. Expect a security check at the Basilica, which is free to enter.
  4. Eat outside the walls. Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci is a pizza restaurant with a 4.7 rating, a short walk from the Basilica side.

For a longer version of this plan, I wrote a step-by-step on how to visit Vatican City, with advice on the order of the rooms and what to skip when you are tired.

Self-guided or guided?

A self-guided visit costs less and lets you move at your own pace, and the audio guide add-on helps. One reviewer who could not take a guided tour because their child uses a wheelchair did the visit with an audio guide and still saw most of the sights:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”
Dena, United States, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica Tour

A guided tour makes sense if you want the history explained and a guide to steer you through the crowds. Reviewers of one tour say the guides were knowledgeable and the skip-the-line access helped, though some asked for clearer details about what the Basilica part includes. Read the inclusions closely before you pay.

Is a Skip-the-Line Ticket Worth It for Vatican Citty?

A skip-the-line ticket is worth it in most cases, in my view, because it replaces the ticket queue with a reserved slot. It does not remove the security check, and it does not guarantee an empty gallery.

Here is what the listings include, so you can compare:

  • Entrance only: Skip-the-ticket-line entry to the Museums, with an audio guide if you select it. It excludes a guided tour, the dome and any guaranteed Basilica access.
  • Entrance with a host: A host meets you at an office and walks you to the Museums entrance, then your support often ends at the door.
  • Guided tour: A licensed guide leads the group through the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and some options add the Basilica or the dome.

My recommendation is to match the ticket to your patience. If you hate crowds and have a short trip, a skip-the-line ticket for the Museums and Sistine Chapel saves the most time. If you only want the Basilica, you do not need to pay for entry, though a guided option can cover the dome and the history. Compare your options in my St. Peter’s Basilica ticket guide.

Practical Tips Before You Go

Practical tips before you go are a few small rules that prevent most bad surprises at Vatican citty. I have kept this list to what the brief’s sources support.

  • Go to the right entrance. Tour meeting points differ, and one provider says clearly that St. Peter’s Square is not its meeting point. Read your voucher.
  • Do not arrive outside your slot. Reserved times are strict.
  • Bring paper or mobile proof. One listing says both the paper and the mobile voucher are accepted at the entrance.
  • Plan for security. Both the Museums and the Basilica have checks, and the Basilica line can be long early in the morning.
  • Check the dress and photo rules on the official pages. I do not state them here because the sources I used do not list them.

Your Vatican Citty Plan in Short

Your Vatican citty plan, meaning a visit to Vatican City, is easy to build once you separate the free part from the paid part. Walk the square and the Basilica for free, and book a timed ticket for the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

My checklist for your trip is simple:

  • Pick a weekday for the Museums, because they are closed on Sundays.
  • Book your slot ahead, and arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Confirm prices and hours on the official Vatican Museums pages.
  • Keep the Basilica for after the Museums, and treat it as a bonus that depends on crowd control.

If you want help choosing between entry tickets and guided tours, start with the tour list above. Prices are shown in US dollars and change over time, so check them on the booking page. This site is an independent guide and is not the official ticket office; official tickets are sold on the Vatican Museums website.
