San Pedro Vatican Tickets

By Updated 11 min read

San Pedro Vatican tickets usually means tickets for St. Peter's Basilica (San Pedro in Spanish), and entering the church itself is free. You only pay for extras such as the Necropolis, the Treasury Museum, a guided tour, or a separate Vatican Museums ticket.

San Pedro Vatican tickets are tickets for Saint Peter’s Basilica, since San Pedro is simply the Spanish name for Saint Peter. The good news is that walking into the church is free, so the tickets you book are for the extras around it and for the neighboring Vatican Museums.

The confusion is understandable. Online shops sell “San Pedro” bundles that mix the Basilica, the dome, the Museums and the Sistine Chapel. In this guide I separate what is free from what costs money, so you pay only for what you want to see.

San Pedro Vatican Tickets Explained

San Pedro Vatican tickets cover two separate places with separate entrances, Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, and normally only one of them requires a paid ticket. The Museums sit on the north side and are entered from Viale Vaticano, while the Basilica faces the big square, which the official Basilica site presents as its own destination.

The word “tickets” gets stretched online. Here is how I sort the options:

  • The Basilica itself: free to enter, as one visitor put it in the review quoted below.
  • Official paid extras: the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis, guided tours and the digital audio guide, all listed on the Basilica’s official site.
  • The Scavi: a separate excavations tour with its own office and its own price.
  • The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: a separate ticket, sold officially and through resellers.

If you only remember one thing, remember this: do not pay a reseller just to “enter San Pedro” unless the product includes something you actually want, like a live guide or a Museums slot.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

Do You Need San Pedro Vatican Tickets to Enter the Basilica?

San Pedro Vatican tickets are not required to enter Saint Peter’s Basilica, because admission to the church is free. Entry is free, though you still go through security and the lines can build early in the day.

The Maps listing for the Basilica shows daily hours of 7 am to 7:10 pm, but please check the official Basilica site before you go, because hours change for ceremonies. One Museums ticket description says Basilica access “is free of charge, but access is not guaranteed” and may vary because of crowd control. That is why I never plan a tight schedule around it.

My advice is simple. Go early, dress modestly, and treat the church as the free highlight of your day. If a seller promises you a “San Pedro ticket” at a high price, ask what is actually included before you pay.

For a wider look at the same question in Spanish, my guides on the Basilica de San Pedro and the variant spelling basilicade san pedro go through the visit step by step.

How Much Do San Pedro Vatican Tickets Cost?

San Pedro Vatican tickets cost nothing for the Basilica, 13 euros for the Scavi, and roughly $32 to $110 for the Museums and guided options sold on GetYourGuide. The price depends on what you add, so compare the line items below.

The table uses figures from the official Scavi page and from the tour listings. Euro amounts are converted at the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on 2026-11-06, taken from the ECB reference rates.

Option Price What you get Source
St. Peter’s Basilica entry Free Church visit, security check applies Basilica site
Scavi individual ticket 13 EUR, about $14.50 Excavations visit with guide contribution Scavi office
Museums entrance ticket, self-paced From $32.31 Skip-the-line entry to the Museums and Sistine Chapel Tour listings below
Museums skip-the-line with host $53.48 Host assists at check-in, no guide Tour listings below
Guided Museums tour $109.87 Group guide, priority Sistine entrance Tour listings below

The Scavi page also notes the euro price as “approximately $16.50 USD,” but my own conversion at the current ECB rate gives a lower figure. Prices and hours change, so confirm the final amount on the official site when you book.

What Official Extras Can You Add Inside St. Peter’s?

Official extras inside St. Peter’s include the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis, a guided Basilica tour and the Digital Audio Guide. All four are listed under “Book your visit” on the official Basilica site.

Here is what each one is, based on the official descriptions:

  • The Treasury Museum: a renewed itinerary through sacred artworks, liturgical furnishings and artistic treasures.
  • The Necropolis: the area under the central nave with ancient Roman and early Christian tombs, along the path toward Saint Peter’s tomb inside the foundations of the original Constantinian basilica.
  • Guided tours of the Basilica: accompanied visits that tie together art, faith and history.
  • Digital Audio Guide: a bookable product for a self-paced visit.

I did not find prices for these on the pages I used, so I will not guess. Open the product page, pick your date, and compare it with the cost of a reseller bundle. For an overview of how all these ticket types fit together, I keep a plain-language comparison in every ticket type side by side.

How Do You Get Scavi Tickets for the Necropolis?

Scavi tickets for the Necropolis are requested straight from the Excavations Office, which handles every reservation itself. The individual ticket costs 13 euros, including the contribution for the guide, and the Scavi entrance fee page says no reductions are given.

The Scavi reservations page explains the process. Requests should come directly from the visitor if possible. You must provide:

  1. The exact number of participants.
  2. The names of participants.
  3. The language requested.
  4. Possible dates when the office can assign your visit, written with the full month name.
  5. An email address, a fax number, or a complete postal address.

The office says there are no set deadlines, and every request, even an urgent one, is fulfilled depending on the places left at the closest available date. The time is chosen by the office, not by you. Group leaders must send a full list of names and the organization.

The same pages list the office hours as Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 14:00. You can also visit the office in person at the south (left) entrance just outside the Colonnade, or write to scavi@fsp.va. My suggestion is to email early and offer several date ranges, because the office assigns the slot.

Which Vatican Tickets Should You Book Instead of a “San Pedro” Bundle?

Vatican tickets worth booking for the Sistine Chapel are Vatican Museums tickets, not a “San Pedro” ticket. I’d book a timed Museums entry, since a free Basilica visit does not cover the Museums at all.

Here is how I choose between the GetYourGuide options in the brief:

  • Self-paced entry: the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket is $36.21 and lets you pick up an audio guide at the dedicated desk. Its listing excludes a guided tour and says Basilica access is not guaranteed.
  • Host-assisted entry: the Inside Out Italy ticket is $53.48 and includes a host who escorts you to the entrance, but the listing excludes a tour guide.
  • Cheapest listing: the Tours And Tours ticket is $32.31, with a meeting point at Via Germanico 8 and a 15-minute early arrival rule.
  • Add-on bundle: the Touristation ticket is $40.11 and offers optional reserved access to Saint Peter’s Basilica and a hop-on, hop-off tour.
  • Guided tour: the Gray Line I Love Rome tour is $109.87, with a maximum group of 20 people and the Raphael Rooms.

These are the tickets I’d compare first. If you feel unsure, start with where to buy Vatican tickets? and read the full comparison there before you commit.

The second quote below makes the same point about waiting time. A reviewer of the Tours And Tours ticket wrote that you need about four hours inside the Museums to enjoy them properly.

“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”

If you prefer to learn the story as you walk, a guided option is worth the extra money. I keep a deeper guide to the Museums ticket choice for that decision, and it covers entry rules in more detail.

Where Are the Entrances and What Are the Opening Hours?

The entrances and opening hours differ by site: the Basilica stands on Piazza San Pietro, and the Vatican Museums are entered from Viale Vaticano. They are two separate addresses, so check which one your ticket is for.

The Maps data lists the Museums as open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm and closed on Sunday, and the Basilica as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm. Treat these hours as approximate, and confirm on the official sites linked on the map listing, since the Museums are closed on Sundays and ticket slots vary.

Two meeting-point details from the tour listings matter in practice:

  • Online tickets for the Museums are checked at the box office labeled CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI after security, according to the entry ticket listing.
  • Several resellers ask you to collect your ticket at their own office first, such as Via Sebastiano Veniero 74 or Via Germanico 8. Leave extra time, because latecomers may not be admitted.

Are There Discounts on San Pedro Vatican Tickets?

Discounts on San Pedro Vatican tickets are limited, and the one rule I can confirm is that the Scavi offers none. The Excavations Office states that “no reductions in price will be given for any reason.”

For everything else, I cannot confirm a discount from the sources I use, so I will not invent one. Prices for resellers also vary by the option you choose, such as an audio guide, a hotel pickup or a group size. That is why I suggest comparing the full inclusions, not just the headline price.

Here are the cheaper habits I recommend:

  • Skip bundles that include things you do not want, such as a hop-on, hop-off ride.
  • Enter the free Basilica on its own and buy only the Museums ticket.
  • Book the Necropolis directly from the office if you want the Scavi price of 13 euros.
  • Read the exclusions, because a “cheap” ticket may leave out the guide or the Basilica.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers adds context for your visit, drawing on figures from Wikidata. They explain why a “ticket to San Pedro” is really about a small walkable state with several separate sites.

  • Area: 0.44 km², so everything you plan is within walking distance.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11, when the modern state was created.
  • Population: 949 in 2024, which makes it a very small place for the crowds it receives.
  • Currency: euro, so you pay in euros at official counters.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which explains the strict rules and security.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV, the pope who reigns here.

According to Wikipedia, Catholic theology holds that Saint Peter was crucified on Vatican Hill in the 1st century AD. That tradition is the reason the Basilica and the Necropolis draw so many people.

Your Plan for San Pedro Vatican Tickets

Your plan for San Pedro Vatican tickets is short: visit the Basilica for free, book the Scavi if you want the Necropolis, and buy a timed Museums ticket for the Sistine Chapel. Keep each ticket tied to the right entrance.

Here is how I’d order it:

  1. Request the Scavi early from the Excavations Office, since the office picks the date and time.
  2. Book a timed Museums entry, or a guided tour if you want context.
  3. Visit the Basilica early in the day and expect security.
  4. Check the official sites on the day for closures and changes.

When you are ready to compare options, you can book Vatican tickets online and match the tour to your dates. For all the ticket types in one place, see the Vatican tickets hub. Prices and hours change, so always confirm them on the official pages linked above before you pay. With the right San Pedro Vatican tickets, you spend your money on the extras that matter and enjoy the free church as it is.
