Vatican Tickets for July 2018

By Updated 14 min read

Vatican tickets for July 2018 can no longer be booked because that month has passed, so this guide uses the latest published figures as of November 2026 to show how a July visit works. The ticket types, prices, free-entry rules and booking advice below apply to any July you plan from now on.

Vatican tickets for July 2018 are no longer on sale, because that month ended years ago. What you can still use is the way a July visit works: which tickets exist, what they cost, how crowded summer gets and where to book without paying a scam markup. Every figure below is the latest published as of November 2026, so treat it as a planning base for your next July, not as a record of 2018 prices.

I wrote this page for two kinds of readers. Some of you are checking an old trip date or an old booking. Most of you are planning a July trip and want a clear answer before the slots sell out. Either way, the ticket system has not changed in its basic logic: you pick a day, you pick a ticket type, and you enter the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel on that day only.

Can You Still Get Vatican Tickets for July 2018?

Vatican tickets for July 2018 can’t be booked any more, since that date lies in the past. If you hold an old voucher, the official Vatican Museums page says tickets cannot be refunded and entitle you to visit solely on the day on which the ticket is issued.

I cannot verify what prices or slot times applied in that month, and I will not guess. The brief I work from covers current figures only, so I use those. If you need a 2018 receipt or confirmation, contact the seller you bought from. If you need a ticket for a July in the future, keep reading, because the process below is the one you will follow.

Which Vatican Tickets Should I Buy for a July Visit?

Vatican tickets for a July visit are best bought as a timed skip-the-line entry for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, which is what I suggest to most first-timers. It lets you pick a slot, avoid the walk-up queue and explore at your own pace. If you want the story behind the art, add a guided tour. A guide costs more but explains the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel ceiling in a way a plain ticket cannot.

Here is how the main choices compare, using the tour data I have:

  • Entry ticket only. The GetYourGuide entrance ticket lists skip-the-ticket-line entry and an optional audio guide, and it excludes a guided tour. It is the simplest option if you like to wander on your own.
  • Entry ticket with a host. Two of the listed options include a host who escorts you from an office near the museums to the entrance. This helps if you are nervous about finding the right door.
  • Small-group guided tour. One listed tour caps the group at 20 people and includes headsets, priority entrance for the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms, where you learn about the School of Athens.
  • Official ticket. You can buy directly from the Vatican Museums at the lowest official price, which I cover in the next section.

If you are still deciding between formats, my advice is to start from the overview of every Vatican tickets type and then narrow down by budget and group size. For the full breakdown of the museum entry itself, my Vatican Museum tickets guide goes deeper.

Vatican Museums Entry Tickets for a July Trip Explained

Vatican Museums entry tickets are priced officially at EUR 20 for the full ticket without online booking, which is about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. Reduced tickets cost EUR 10, about $11.17, and the reduced ticket with a booked Skip the Line slot is EUR 10 plus EUR 5. All amounts come from the official prices page.

Ticket Official price About in USD
Full entry, no online booking EUR 20.00 $22.33
Reduced entry, no online booking EUR 10.00 $11.17
Reduced entry with Skip the Line booking EUR 10.00 + 5.00 $16.75
Reduced ticket for schools, no online booking EUR 5.00 $5.58
Reduced ticket for schools with Skip the Line EUR 5.00 + 2.00 $7.82
Castel Gandolfo Papal Palace and Secret Garden, full EUR 12.00 $13.40

Prices and hours change, so confirm them on the official page before you pay. The official page lists the booking supplement for reduced tickets but does not show it for the full ticket in the text I have, so check the portal for the exact full-price total with a booked slot.

What the resale tickets cost

Resale tickets cost more than official ones because they bundle a booking fee, and some add a host, an audio guide or a guide. The listed GetYourGuide entrance ticket is $36.21, the cheapest skip-the-line listing in my data is $32.31, and the small-group guided tour is $109.87. You pay for convenience and for guaranteed timing, not for a different entrance to the art.

Where Is the Safest Place to Buy Vatican Tickets for July 2018 or Any July?

The safest place to buy Vatican tickets is the official portal at tickets.museivaticani.va, or else a well-reviewed reseller with clear inclusions. The Vatican Museums state that the only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va, and they warn about look-alike domains that charge significantly higher prices.

That warning matters more in summer, when demand peaks and scam sites appear. Check the address bar before you enter card details. If a site is not the official portal, treat it as a reseller and read what the ticket includes. I’m not the official ticket office, and neither is this site: we are an independent guide.

For a reseller, I look at three things: whether the ticket is timed, whether it names an entrance and meeting point, and how many reviews sit behind the rating. The first listing below has more than 160,000 reviews at a 4.48 average. If you prefer to book through a marketplace, I’d choose one of these tours.

Most travelers say timed entry makes access easier, though some wish the queue instructions were clearer. Read the meeting point twice before you go, because the options start in different places. One option starts at an office on Via Sebastiano Veniero, another at Via Germanico, and the direct-entry ticket sends you to Viale Vaticano.

What Is the Vatican Like in July?

The Vatican in July is hot, sunny and the driest stretch of the year. Open-Meteo data for Vatican City from 2016 to 2025 shows an average July high of 32.9 C and low of 20.9 C, which is about 91 F by day and 70 F at night. Rainfall averages 24 mm, the lowest of any month, and the sun shines about 13.7 hours a day.

Here is what that means for your ticket choice:

  • Book the earliest slot you can. The heat builds through the afternoon, and the museum galleries can feel warm when crowded.
  • Expect the line to be the main hazard. One reviewer of a skip-the-line product put it plainly, as the quote below shows.
  • Bring water and plan a shaded break. Rain is unlikely, so the sun is your main issue outdoors.
“The only way to visit the Vatican Museums are with a skip the line ticket, because you will spend around 4h in the museum if you want to enjoy it properly, but if you don't have a skip the line ticket, add at least 2-3 hours of waiting in line. A line that is literally at least 100 m long”
Rares, Romania, 2026-10 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Skip-The-Line Ticket

I take that review seriously. For vatican tickets for july 2018 or any later summer, a line that long in 32 C heat is a bad way to start the day, and it is the main reason I recommend a timed ticket for July.

June and August bracket the month with their own pressure points. The Vatican public holiday calendar lists Saint Peter and Saint Paul on 29 June and Assumption Day on 15 August, and I would check the official calendar of openings and closures for either date before you commit. Neither falls inside July in the 2026 or 2027 lists I have.

When Are the Vatican Museums Open?

Vatican Museums opening hours run Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm, with Sunday listed as closed. Treat those hours as a rough pattern only, because the museum listing can differ from the official calendar, which also governs the free last Sunday of the month.

St. Peter’s Basilica keeps longer hours. Its listing shows 7 am to 7:10 pm every day, including Sunday. I’d treat that as a general pattern and confirm it before you go, since religious events can close parts of the basilica.

The practical point is simple: if your July trip includes a Sunday, build the museum visit around Monday to Saturday and use Sunday for the basilica and the square. If you can travel on the last Sunday of the month, the museums may be free, but they will be crowded, and that is not the day I would choose for a relaxed visit.

Do I Need Tickets for St. Peter’s Basilica and the Scavi?

St. Peter’s Basilica tickets are unnecessary since entry is free, though access is not guaranteed on busy days. The GetYourGuide entrance ticket notes that the basilica is free of charge, but access may vary due to crowd control, and that the dome needs a separate ticket.

The Vatican Necropolis, known as the Scavi, is a separate booking. The Excavations Office lists the individual ticket at EUR 13, about $14.51, including the guide, with no price reductions for any reason. You can reach the office at scavi@fsp.va, and it lists hours of 9:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday and 9:00 to 14:00 on Saturday.

Here is how I would order the day. Do the museums first on a timed slot, then walk to the basilica, because the basilica is free and flexible while the museums are not. If you want the Scavi, book it well ahead and treat it as its own visit. For the wider picture of how the whole city-state is ticketed, my guide to Vatican City entry tickets covers each site.

Where the entrances are

The Vatican entrances are worth learning in advance, because finding the right door saves more time than any ticket upgrade. The museums’ online box office appears in the listings as CASSA ONLINE E GRUPPI, and the direct-entry ticket tells you to scan your ticket there after the security check. You can see the museums and that box office on the places below.

Who Gets Free or Reduced Entry With Vatican Tickets for July 2018 Rules?

Free entry to the Vatican Museums applies to children below the age of 7, as well as visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67% and everyone on the last Sunday of the month. The official list also names directors of museum institutions and bodies engaged in protecting heritage.

Disabled visitors need documentation, such as the European Disability Card, and a companion also enters free if the visitor is not self-sufficient. These tickets cannot be booked online. You collect them at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall, and both visitors get priority skip-the-line entry.

Students have their own reduced price. The student ticket is for students up to and including 25 years of age with a document confirming enrollment for the current year. The page is blunt about the risk: if you buy a reduced ticket without entitlement, you must buy a new ticket at the full rate, and the reduced ticket is cancelled without a refund.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers gives you a quick way to size up the place before you book. These figures come from Wikidata, and each one changes how I would plan the day:

  • Area: 0.44 km². The state is tiny, so the real distance you cover is mostly inside the museum galleries and the walk between the museums and the basilica.
  • Founded 1929-02-11. That is the date the modern city-state was established, which explains why the museums sit inside a sovereign enclave with its own rules.
  • World Heritage Site. The designation is why timed entry and crowd control matter, because the sites are fragile and heavily visited.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Almost everyone you meet inside is a visitor, which is why summer queues build so fast.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros, so check your card’s foreign fee before you buy.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and official pages come in Italian first, so the English pages on museivaticani.va are the ones to use.

The Wikipedia entry also describes the city-state as an enclave within Rome and notes that it includes the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. That is why you buy museum tickets for the Vatican and not for Rome as a whole.

How Do I Book Vatican Tickets for July Without Stress?

Booking Vatican tickets for July goes best in this order: pick your day, then your slot, then your ticket type, and always book early. In July I’d book as early as your plans allow, choose the first or second slot of the morning and keep a backup day in case plans shift. Tickets cannot be refunded, so a firm date saves money.

A simple order works well:

  1. Check the official calendar of openings and closures for your dates.
  2. Decide whether you want a plain entry ticket or a guided tour.
  3. Compare the official portal price with one or two marketplace options.
  4. Book the earliest slot you can and save the meeting point on your phone.
  5. Arrive 15 minutes early and carry your voucher, paper or mobile.

If you want a guide, the options below include a small group, hotel pickup on some options and an upgrade that adds reserved access to St. Peter’s Basilica. Review the meeting point before you pay, since one option starts at Piazza del Risorgimento and another at an office near the museums.

One traveler at the museums described the other side of the choice:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That reviewer was talking about the basilica, but the lesson carries over: go early. If you are comparing how different countries and cities sell passes, my pages on Vatican Rome tickets and how Vatican tickets work from Italy cover those angles, and the broader tickets for Rome and Italy page covers neighboring attractions.

Planning an Older or Future Date

Planning an older or future date is what brings some readers here, usually while sorting an old booking or a 2018 itinerary. The mix of confusion is common: dates move, vouchers expire, and old prices stay in memory. A few rules keep you safe.

  • Old vouchers expire. The ticket entitles the visit solely on the day issued, so an old voucher does nothing today.
  • Past event pages are not current pages. If you were looking at a one-off event, such as the Christmas Mass 2018 tickets page, remember that event tickets are tied to their date as well.
  • Use the current year’s calendar. Holiday lists for 2026 and 2027 show the Vatican and Italian dates that can change opening hours, and I send you to the official calendar for closures.
  • Do not pay a markup for a “special” July slot. If a seller claims a July slot is rare, compare it with the official portal first.

If you are weighing the official route against a marketplace, how do Vatican Rome tickets work is a fair starting point, and my tickets hub lists every guide on one page.

Your Practical Wrap-Up for July Vatican Tickets

Vatican tickets for July from 2018 are a closed chapter, yet the planning lessons stay useful. Book a timed slot, buy only from the official portal or a reseller you trust, and respect the July heat by choosing the earliest slot. Official full tickets cost EUR 20 without online booking, reduced tickets EUR 10, and children below 7 enter free.

My own checklist is short. Confirm the date against the official calendar, pick between an entry ticket and a guide, and save your meeting point before you leave your hotel. When you are ready to compare every option side by side, the Online Vatican Tickets homepage shows all the ticket types in one place, and I’d start there.

Can you visit the Vatican without tickets?

Yes, but you will wait in the walk-up line at the Vatican Museums. The official full price without online booking is EUR 20, and visitors who skipped online booking have described waits of several hours in summer. St. Peter's Basilica is the exception, because it is free to enter.

Are Vatican tickets refundable?

The official Vatican Museums page states that tickets cannot be refunded. A ticket is also valid only on the day it is issued, so choose your date carefully before you pay.

Who can enter the Vatican Museums for free?

The official list includes children below the age of 7, visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%, and everyone on the last Sunday of the month, subject to the museum calendar. Disabled visitors and a companion collect free tickets at the Special Permits or Welcome Desk in the entrance hall.

Is the Vatican open on Sundays?

The Vatican Museums listing shows Sunday as closed. The official exception is the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free, subject to the calendar of openings and closures. St. Peter's Basilica is listed as open every day.

What is the official website for Vatican Museums tickets?

The only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va, according to the Vatican Museums. The museums warn that look-alike domains may charge much higher prices.

Do student tickets exist for the Vatican Museums?

Yes. The reduced student ticket is for students up to and including 25 years of age who carry a document from their school or university confirming enrollment for the current year. Buying a reduced ticket without entitlement means paying the full price for a new ticket.
