Ancient Roman tombs inside the Vatican Necropolis beneath St. Peter's Basilica, shown for a guide on how to reserve a ticket

Reserve Ticket to Vatican Necropolis

By Updated 11 min read

To reserve a ticket to the Vatican Necropolis, use the official St. Peter's Basilica website, where the Necropolis visit is listed under "View and book." Marketplace tickets for the Vatican Museums do not cover it, so plan the Necropolis as its own booking.

Reserve ticket to Vatican Necropolis is a different job from buying a Vatican Museums ticket, and mixing the two up is the most common planning mistake I see. The Necropolis is a small, protected site under St. Peter’s Basilica, and its visit is handled through the Basilica’s own official channel. This guide shows you where to reserve, what to prepare, and how to fill the rest of your day.

I wrote it for travelers who already know they want the underground tombs, not only the Sistine Chapel. If you are still deciding what to book overall, my page on Vatican tickets online compares every ticket type side by side.

What You Are Actually Reserving

What you are reserving is a visit to an ancient cemetery. Per Wikipedia’s entry on the Vatican Necropolis, it holds tombs dating from the first to the fourth century AD, at depths of 5 to 12 meters (16 to 39 feet) below St. Peter’s Basilica.

The official St. Peter’s Basilica page for the Necropolis describes it as lying under the central nave, rich in ancient Roman and early Christian tombs. It says you can retrace the ancient path leading to Saint Peter’s tomb, deep in the foundations of the original basilica commissioned by Constantine.

That description tells you what kind of ticket this is. It is a timed cultural visit, not an add-on button inside a museum purchase. You choose it on purpose, and you plan the day around it.

How to Reserve a Ticket to the Vatican Necropolis Step by Step

Reserving a ticket to the Vatican Necropolis is safest through the official route, and this is the order I suggest.

Ancient Roman tombs inside the Vatican Necropolis beneath St. Peter's Basilica, shown for a guide on how to reserve a ticketBook aheadVatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica TourCheck availability · from $60
  1. Open the official Necropolis page on the St. Peter’s Basilica website. The basilica’s homepage lists “The Necropolis” among its bookable visits, with a “View and book” link.
  2. Pick your preferred date and read the visit details shown there before you commit. Rules and availability are set by the Basilica, so the official page is the only place to trust.
  3. Complete the booking and save the confirmation where you can open it offline.
  4. Plan your arrival at the Excavations Office, known by its Italian name Ufficio Scavi, which sits next to St. Peter’s Square.

The Excavations Office has its own listing on Maps with a Necropolis website link pointing to the same basilica page. Its listed hours are 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday, with Sunday closed. Treat those as a planning guide and confirm them on the official site.

Prices and slots change, so I do not quote a Necropolis fare here. The official page shows the current amount at checkout.

Reserve Ticket to Vatican Necropolis or Buy a Museums Ticket First?

Reserve ticket to Vatican Necropolis first, then build everything else around it, because the Necropolis is the scarcer, more tightly controlled visit, while Vatican Museums entry is easy to add around a fixed time.

This order solves a real pain point. If you buy a Museums ticket for a fixed slot and only then look for the Necropolis, you may find the two clash. Starting with the harder booking leaves you free to fit the flexible one beside it.

For the Museums side, my guide to reserving Vatican Museum tickets explains the timed-entry logic. For the wider picture of how reservations work across the Vatican, see how to reserve a ticket to the Vatican.

Vatican Necropolis Entry Tickets Explained: Which “Necropolis” Do You Mean?

Vatican Necropolis entry tickets come in two different products on official Vatican sites, and they are easy to confuse. One is the Vatican Necropolis under the Basilica. The other is the Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis, listed on the Vatican Museums site.

On the Vatican Museums’ “Choose your tour” page, the Via Triumphalis necropolis appears next to the Vatican Gardens and the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo. It has its own booking calendar at the Museums ticket portal.

The one under St. Peter’s has a different official home: the Basilica’s website. If your goal is the tomb of Saint Peter, you want the Basilica page. If you book through the Museums portal, you are booking a different site.

Visit Where it is reserved What it covers
Vatican Necropolis St. Peter’s Basilica official site Tombs under the central nave and the path to Saint Peter’s tomb
Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis Vatican Museums ticket portal A separate necropolis listed beside the Gardens tour
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Vatican Museums prices page Museums and Sistine Chapel on the day issued; EUR 20 full, about $22

I spell this out because a wrong click costs you a date you may not get back. Read the page title before you pay.

Why a Museums Ticket Does Not Replace a Necropolis Reservation

A Vatican Museums ticket admits you to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel on the day it is issued, according to the official prices page. That is the whole scope. The Necropolis is not part of that entitlement.

The marketplace listings agree. The skip-the-line Museums tickets in the tours below list the Basilica and its dome as exclusions or as separate items, and none of them includes underground access. Skip-the-line only changes how you enter the Museums, not where else your ticket works.

So when someone asks whether they can “add the Necropolis” to a Museums booking, my answer is no. Book it separately, from the right office.

When Should You Reserve Ticket to Vatican Necropolis?

Reserve ticket to Vatican Necropolis as soon as your travel dates are settled. A plan to reserve ticket to Vatican Necropolis starts with the date, and I can’t give you a safe number of days from the sources I rely on, because the official pages I checked do not publish one, and I do not want to invent a window.

What I can say is how the system behaves in practice. The Necropolis is a limited-access site under a working basilica, so it does not scale like the Museums. Treat any date you actually care about as something to lock in early, and avoid leaving it for the week you arrive.

Check the Vatican City and Rome ticket hub if you want to see how other reservations are timed, and compare with my page on whether you need to reserve Vatican tickets for the Museums side.

What the Visit Is Like Underground

The Vatican Necropolis visit covers a site that began as an open-air burial ground. Wikipedia explains that it sat on the southern slope of Vatican Hill, next to the Circus of Caligula, along the Via Cornelia. Roman law forbade burial inside the city walls, so cemeteries grew along the roads outside.

Later, Emperor Constantine built the first St. Peter’s Church over the supposed grave of the Apostle Peter. To get a flat building area, he filled part of the necropolis with soil and debris, with the exception of Peter’s tomb, which was preserved. That is why the ancient tombs survived so well under the later basilica.

The modern excavations ran from 1940 to 1949 under Pope Pius XII, with the goal of locating the grave of Saint Peter. They uncovered a series of mausoleums, first labeled with Greek letters and later with Latin ones. One of them is the Tomb of the Julii, dated to the third or fourth century.

You are not walking through a museum corridor. You are walking through streets of tombs that were buried for centuries, which is why access is managed so carefully.

Vatican Necropolis by the Numbers

Vatican Necropolis numbers are thin, since the Wikidata record I use holds no verified figures for the site itself, so these figures come from its host state and the sources above.

  • Depth: 5 to 12 meters. The tombs lie that far below the Basilica, per Wikipedia. Expect a descent below street level.
  • Dates: first to fourth century AD. That is the span of the tombs, so you are seeing Roman funerary architecture, not medieval work.
  • Excavation: 1940 to 1949. Modern study is under a century old, which explains why the site is still carefully protected.
  • Vatican City area: 0.44 km². The state is tiny, so the Excavations Office, the Basilica and the Museums are close together on the map but not the same entrance.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. It is a real working state, which is why rules and schedules follow its own calendar.
  • Established: 11 February 1929. The date of the state’s inception, useful context for why the Necropolis sits under a sovereign territory.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros, and my dollar figures use the ECB reference rate.

Where to Go and What to Combine It With

Where to go is simple: the Excavations Office and the Necropolis both sit near St. Peter’s Square, per the Maps entries below. The Museums entrance is on a different side of the walls, along Viale Vaticano, as the Museums ticket meeting instructions say.

St. Peter’s Basilica is listed with hours of 7 am to 7:10 pm daily. One Maps reviewer described waiting an hour to get in, and noted the visit itself needed no ticket.

“Visit the St Peter's Basilica if you are in Rome, without any doubt. This place is really amazing. Although we had to wait for one hour to get in to the building, it was worth to do that. No Ticket is needed and is free.”
Masoud · Google Maps review about Ufficio Scavi

That experience is a good reminder that the Basilica and the Necropolis are separate things. Entering the church above does not give you the tombs below. If you want both, plan the Necropolis reservation as the fixed point and visit the church before or after your slot.

My pages on reserving Vatican tickets and on Vatican City reserve tickets show how the other visits slot around a fixed reservation.

Filling the Rest of Your Day: Museums Tickets Around the Necropolis

Museums tickets around the Necropolis work best as a separate block, so once your Necropolis time is set I’d book Vatican Museums entry afterward. The Museums are open 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday per the Maps listing, with Sunday closed, so you have plenty of room on either side of an underground visit.

Here is how the three most useful options compare, using the tour data in the brief.

The first two are self-guided skip-the-line entry tickets. The Gray Line option adds a group guide of up to 20 people, a Raphael Rooms stop, and a priority Sistine Chapel entrance. If you want context on Renaissance art after a morning among Roman tombs, I’d choose the guided option.

I’d also leave a gap of a couple of hours between the two reservations. Moving from an underground visit to a museum entrance involves security and walking, and rushing it wastes the benefit of timed entry.

If you prefer to see every Vatican booking option in one place, you can book Vatican tickets online from my main comparison. My pillar guide to Vatican Museum tickets covers the Museums prices and rules in more depth.

What to Prepare Before You Arrive

What to prepare before you arrive comes down to a few simple steps that prevent most problems on the day.

  • Bring your confirmation. Keep it on your phone and, if you can, a printed copy.
  • Carry matching ID. Names on a reservation should match the traveler. Ask the official page what ID it expects.
  • Plan for the Basilica’s dress code. Shoulders and knees covered is the sensible default for any holy site, and the Necropolis is beneath a church.
  • Arrive early. Late arrivals are the most common reason timed entries are lost. Marketplace listings for the Museums say the same thing about their slots.
  • Keep a flexible afternoon. If your slot shifts, you do not want a second booking hanging on it.

Avoiding Scams and Look-Alike Sites

Look-alike sites are a known risk, and the Vatican Museums warn on their prices and tickets page that the only official site for buying tickets online is tickets.museivaticani.va. They also warn of sites with similar domains that may charge significantly higher prices.

I apply the same caution to the Necropolis. Start from the Basilica’s own address, not from an advert. If a site charges an unclear fee or offers a “guaranteed” slot with no explanation, step back and return to the official page.

That warning also covers refunds: the Museums state that their tickets cannot be refunded. Read the terms on any reservation before you pay, so a change of plan does not cost you.

Your Reservation Checklist

Reserve ticket to Vatican Necropolis without surprises by following this short plan. First, decide which necropolis you mean, and use the Basilica page for the one under St. Peter’s. Second, reserve it first and lock your date. Third, add Vatican Museums entry as a separate, flexible booking.

Fourth, leave a buffer between the two, bring your confirmation and ID, and stick to official addresses. Prices and hours change, so confirm them on the official Necropolis page and on the Museums site before you go.

If you want a simple way to compare Museums options while your Necropolis date is locked, reserving Vatican tickets online is the next page I’d read. It shows the timing and entry rules side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tour the Vatican Necropolis?

Yes. The official St. Peter's Basilica website lists the Necropolis as a visit you can view and book, and it describes a route through ancient Roman and early Christian tombs under the central nave. Reserve it through that official page rather than through a general museum ticket.

How long does the Vatican Necropolis tour take?

The brief sources I rely on do not state a duration, so I will not guess one. Check the official Necropolis page when you reserve, and keep the rest of your day flexible around the slot.

How much does it cost to visit the Vatican Museums?

A full Vatican Museums ticket is EUR 20 without online booking, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06, and the reduced ticket is EUR 10. That price covers the Museums and Sistine Chapel only, not the Necropolis.

What days should I avoid when planning a Vatican visit?

Sunday is the clearest one to avoid for this trip. The Vatican Museums and the Excavations Office (Ufficio Scavi) both show Sunday as closed on their Maps listings, so build your Necropolis and Museums plans around Monday to Saturday.

Keep planning your visit
