Vatican Official Page

By Updated 11 min read

The Vatican official page you need depends on your goal, because the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica each run their own .va website. Use the museums' site for tickets and opening hours, and the basilica's site for the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis and guided basilica visits.

Vatican official page is a phrase that sounds like it points to one website, but there are really several. The Vatican Museums have their own official site, and St. Peter’s Basilica has a separate one. Vatican City State has a third. I’ll show you which one to open for each job, so you land on the right page the first time.

This matters because the wrong page wastes time. A visitor who wants a Sistine Chapel ticket will not find it on the basilica’s site, and a visitor who wants the Necropolis will not find it on the museums’ site. Below I sort out what each site does, what you can trust, and where a booking partner fits in.

Which Vatican Official Page Should You Open First?

The Vatican official page to open first is the Vatican Museums site if you want the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms or any museum ticket. Pick the St. Peter’s Basilica site instead for the church, the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis or a basilica tour.

Here is how I’d decide. The museums’ homepage says “Welcome to the official site of the Vatican Museums” and groups its content under Pope’s Museums, Collections, Organise your visit and Events and News. That is a museum-visit page. The basilica’s homepage says “Welcome to the Official Website of Saint Peter’s Basilica” and has a “Book your visit” area. That is a church-visit page.

Most first-time visitors need the museums’ site, because the Sistine Chapel is part of the museum route. If you are weighing ticket types, I keep a plain comparison on our main ticket comparison so you can see the options side by side before you decide where to buy.

Official Vatican Websites at a Glance

Official Vatican websites each cover a different part of Vatican City, and the table below shows who does what. My list includes only sites that official or reference sources confirm.

Site Address Use it for
Vatican Museums museivaticani.va Museum tickets, opening hours, temporary closures, collections
St. Peter’s Basilica basilicasanpietro.va Treasury Museum, Necropolis, guided basilica tours, digital audio guide
Vatican City State vaticanstate.va State information; listed as the official website of Vatican City on Wikidata

Notice the domain ending. Wikidata lists .va as the top-level internet domain of Vatican City, and all three addresses above use it. I use that as my first check on any page that claims to be official.

If you want a closer look at how to tell sites apart, my guide to which site counts as the official Vatican website? goes through it in detail. For the state’s own pages, see the Vatican City State site.

How to Recognize a Real Vatican Official Page

A real Vatican official page lives on a .va address and links out to the museums or the basilica from there. Any .com site selling “Vatican tickets” is a reseller or a marketplace, which is not the Vatican itself.

That does not make resellers bad. It means you should know what you are buying. Here are the checks I use:

  • Domain: the address ends in .va, as in museivaticani.va and basilicasanpietro.va.
  • Content: a real Vatican official page describes its own collections, visits or services in the institution’s voice.
  • Hours and closures: the museums’ site has a dedicated opening hours and temporary closures page. A site that gives hours with no link back to that page is copying it.
  • Claims of being official: a marketplace can call a guide “official” or an entrance “dedicated”. That describes the product, not the site selling it.

I keep these checks short on purpose. If a page fails the domain test, treat it as a seller, and read its terms before you pay.

Where Do You Find Official Vatican Museums Tickets?

Official Vatican Museums tickets are found on the museums’ own website, under “Organise your visit” in the main menu. That site also covers tours, prices and visitor services, and it is where closures are announced.

The museums’ homepage shows an open or closed notice and a link to opening hours. I would always read that notice before paying for anything, because it is the one place the museums themselves update.

I do not quote a ticket price here, because the brief I work from has no published euro price for the museum entry, and prices change. Open the official site for the current figure. My page on the museums’ official ticket page explains the booking steps, and official Vatican tickets and how they differ from resale covers the difference between buying direct and buying through a partner. For the full picture of museum entry, start with my Vatican Museum tickets guide.

When a booking partner makes sense

A booking partner can be useful when the official calendar looks full, or when you want a guide, a set meeting point or an audio guide in one package. The entry-ticket listing below includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and, if you select it, an audio guide for the museums.

Those tickets come from a marketplace, and I’m not the official ticket office. Treat the tours below as an option next to the official site, and still check the museums’ hours page before your date.

The first listing is an entrance ticket with no guide. The second adds an optional guide. The third is for the basilica, with a fast-track dome entry and the official audio guide. Check each listing’s inclusions, because the museum tickets do not include the basilica dome.

What Does the Official St. Peter’s Basilica Site Offer?

The official St. Peter’s Basilica site lets you book the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis, guided tours and a digital audio guide. It also carries news and historical studies of the church.

The homepage has a “Book your visit” section that promises tickets, guided tours, special access and useful information. It describes the Necropolis as the area under the central nave, with ancient Roman and early Christian tombs and a path toward Saint Peter’s tomb. It also mentions a Treasury Museum with a renewed itinerary of sacred artworks and liturgical furnishings.

One detail trips people up. Entering the basilica itself is free of charge, but that access is not guaranteed, because crowd control can limit it. That is the wording one tour listing uses, and I find it a fair warning. If your plan depends on a set time, book a timed product rather than assuming you can walk in.

As one traveler put it on the basilica’s map listing:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

Their point about a line forming early fits the crowd-control warning above. The dome climb is a separate item. One tour listing says its dome access is a separate ticket if you book the basilica option without it, so read the inclusions before you pay.

What Are the Official Opening Hours?

The official opening hours list the Vatican Museums as open 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. St. Peter’s Basilica is listed as open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm.

Those hours come from the place listings, and the museums’ own site is the authority. Its opening hours and temporary closures page is where changes appear. The Sistine Chapel is listed with the same hours as the museums, since you reach it through the museum route.

Here is how I’d plan around that:

  1. Pick a weekday or Saturday for the museums, since Sunday is closed.
  2. Visit the basilica on a different day or at a different time, because its hours differ.
  3. Check the official hours page the week you travel, in case of a temporary closure.

The map below shows the three main sites and a nearby place to eat, so you can see how far apart the entrances are.

The museums and the basilica are separate visits with separate entrances. A tour that covers both says so in its meeting details, so I would read those before you set a start time.

Are Official Vatican Tours Worth Booking?

Official Vatican tours are worth booking when you want a guide to explain the art, because a guide turns a crowded route into a story. To move at your own pace, an entry ticket with an audio guide is the lighter choice.

Several listings in my data advertise guided visits with an official Vatican guide or a licensed guide, plus skip-the-line entry. The listing for the museums tour with an official guide starts at 30 minutes before the scheduled time at the museum entrance on Viale Vaticano. Another meets at the local partner’s office on Via Vespasiano, and says that St. Peter’s Square is not the meeting point.

Meeting points differ a lot, and that is where visitors lose time. My guide to how official tours work explains the main formats. Here are the guided options I’d compare:

The cheapest of these is $52.37 and the most expensive is $76.88, though prices change, so confirm them on the listing. One traveler wrote about the guided option:

“Do not visit the Vatican without a tour guide and skip the line tickets. The Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel are wall to wall people. Lots of stairs . Our museum guide was excellent, knowledgeable and a good sense of humour. Escorted by tour company rep to official guide meeting point with skip the line tickets. Always get your tickets in advance to avoid horrendous lines!”
Thomas, Canada, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Rome: Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museums and Basilica Entry

I agree with the advice to book ahead. I would still read the exclusions first: one listing leaves out a basilica guide, and another says basilica access is not available on Wednesday mornings.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers shows how tiny the state is, and a few figures explain why its sites sit so close together. They come from Wikidata, each with a note on what it means for you.

  • Area: 0.44 km². Everything you want is within walking distance, so the hard part is entrances and timing, not distance.
  • Inception: 1929-02-11. The modern state dates from the Lateran Treaty, and Wikipedia confirms the 11 February 1929 signing.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The collections you see are protected, which is one reason for timed entry and dress rules.
  • Population: 949 (2024). It is the least populous country, so the visitors outnumber residents on any open day.
  • Currency: euro. Pay in euros on official pages.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Official sites also offer English pages.
  • Head of state: Leo XIV. The pope rules the state as an absolute monarch, according to Wikipedia.

Wikipedia’s own opening line puts it simply: Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe.

What Else Should You Know Before You Click Buy?

Before you click buy, check three things on the official pages: the opening hours for your date, any temporary closure, and what your ticket includes. Everything else is detail.

The museums’ ticket does not include a guide unless you choose one, and it does not include the basilica dome. The basilica’s extras are sold on its own site. I find that most confusion comes from assuming one ticket covers both places.

If you want the shortest route, here is my advice. Use the museums’ site for the Sistine Chapel, use the basilica’s site for the Necropolis and the Treasury Museum, and use a partner listing only when you want a guide or a bundled meeting point. For a deeper look at the museum side, all ticket guides are collected in one place.

Pay attention to your arrival time as well. The listings I reviewed ask you not to arrive outside your assigned slot, and one asks you to be at the entrance 30 minutes early for a guided start. Treat those instructions as part of the ticket.

Using the Vatican Official Page Well: A Short Plan

The Vatican official page that matches your goal is the one to use, and the .va domain test is worth keeping in mind. That single habit prevents most of the mistakes I hear about.

My practical plan is short:

  • Decide whether you want the museums, the basilica or both.
  • Open the matching .va site and read the hours and closure notice for your date.
  • Choose between buying direct and a guided partner listing, and read the inclusions either way.
  • Book a timed slot and keep the voucher on your phone.

If you want help choosing between ticket types, see every ticket type side by side and then return to the official sites to confirm the details. A Vatican official page will always be the final word on hours and closures, and a good booking should never contradict it.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the official Vatican website?

There is no single site for everything. The Vatican Museums run museivaticani.va, St. Peter's Basilica runs basilicasanpietro.va, and Wikidata lists vaticanstate.va as the official website of Vatican City State.

Is the Vatican Museums open on Sunday?

The museum's listed weekly hours show it closed on Sunday and open 8 am to 8 pm Monday through Saturday. Hours and temporary closures change, so check the opening hours page on the official museums site before you go.

Do I need a ticket for St. Peter's Basilica?

Entering the basilica itself is free of charge, but access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it. Extras such as the Treasury Museum, the Necropolis and guided tours are booked through the basilica's official site.

What language is official in Vatican City?

Wikidata lists Italian and Latin as the official languages of Vatican City. The state uses the euro, so you pay in euros on official sites.

Is a GetYourGuide ticket the same as an official ticket?

No. It is a ticket from a booking marketplace that includes entry with a reserved time. We are not the official ticket office, and the museums' own site is where you confirm hours and closures.
