What day is the Vatican closed? The Vatican Museums, home of the Sistine Chapel, are shut every Sunday except the last one of the month, and they also close on a short list of holidays that land on a different weekday each year. According to the official Vatican Museums hours page, the rest of the week they are open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I wrote this page for one reason: a closed door in Rome is an expensive surprise. A fixed holiday can cancel a plan you made months ago, and a Sunday can quietly erase a day of a short trip. Below I list every closed day, explain the one Sunday that breaks the rule, and show you how to double-check the dates before you pay for anything.

What Day Is the Vatican Closed Every Week?

The Vatican is closed every week on Sundays, with one exception per month. From Monday through Saturday the Museums welcome visitors from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and the official hours page gives 6:00 p.m. as the final entry time.

That final entry time matters more than the closing time. The museums ask visitors to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing, so a ticket you use at 6:00 p.m. gives you very little time inside. One Google Maps reviewer described exactly this squeeze:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

My advice: treat 4:00 p.m. as the latest sensible start for a first visit. The Sistine Chapel sits at the end of the route, and you do not want to reach Michelangelo’s ceiling while staff are already moving people toward the exit.

Vatican Museums Closing Days Explained

Vatican Museums closing days go beyond Sundays to 13 fixed dates, all named on the official closure list. The table below groups them so you can see which ones are religious feasts, which are anniversaries and which are national-style holidays.

Date Occasion What I’d do
January 1 New Year (Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God) Plan Basilica and Rome sights instead
January 6 Epiphany Book the Museums for the days around it
February 11 Anniversary of the founding of Vatican City Check the calendar before booking
March 19 Saint Joseph’s Day Book another weekday
April 6 Easter Monday in 2026 Confirm the date in your travel year
May 1 Saint Joseph the Worker Pick April 30 or May 2
June 29 Saints Peter and Paul Avoid completely
August 14 and 15 Eve of Assumption and Assumption Day Avoid both days
November 1 All Saints Day Move to the following Monday
December 8 Immaculate Conception Book December 7 or 9
December 25 and 26 Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day Plan around both

The occasion names in the second column come from the Vatican public holiday list on the Nager.Date holiday calendar, which matches the dates on the Museums’ list. The official page gives only the dates, so I added the names to help you remember why each day is shut.

Why April 6 is a trap

April 6 is a trap because the “6 April” entry on the official list is Easter Monday for 2026, according to the Nager.Date Vatican list. Easter moves every year, so in 2027 Easter Monday falls on March 29, and the official page points to a separate 2026 to 2027 openings and closures calendar for the details.

If you travel at Easter, don’t rely on a blog’s old list, including mine. Open that official calendar and check the exact week you land in Rome.

Which Vatican Holidays Affect Your Trip?

Vatican holidays follow their own calendar, which does not match Italy’s. The Nager.Date Vatican list for 2026 includes dates such as March 13 (anniversary of the papal election), April 23 (the Pope’s name day) and September 8 (Nativity of Mary) that are not on the Museums’ closure list.

So a Vatican holiday is not automatically a closed Museums day. The closure list is the document that counts. Still, a holiday that also falls on a weekend can change how busy Rome feels, and I’d rather you read the official calendar than guess.

Italy adds its own days. Italian public holidays such as Liberation Day on April 25, Republic Day on June 2 and St. Francis of Assisi’s Day on October 4 appear in the Italian list on the same site. They affect trains, shops and restaurants across Rome, even though the Museums stay open on those dates unless the closure list says otherwise.

Are the Vatican Museums Open on the Last Sunday of the Month?

The Vatican Museums are open on the last Sunday of the month in most cases. Doors run from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free, per the official hours page.

There is a catch. The last Sunday does not count if it coincides with Easter Sunday, June 29, December 25, December 26 or December 31. For the rest of 2026, that gives you November 29 and December 27 as free openings, and I’d confirm both on the official calendar.

If you only want to know about regular Sundays, my short page on whether Vatican City is closed on Sunday covers that single question in more detail.

Is the free Sunday worth it?

The free Sunday is worth it only if you tolerate crowds. Free entry means you spend nothing on admission, but you give up most of the day: the Museums close at 2:00 p.m., and the official page notes only that guided tours can be reserved separately.

My recommendation: use the free Sunday if your budget is tight and you are flexible about timing. If the Sistine Chapel is the point of your trip, I’d pay for a weekday slot instead. The full ticket is EUR 20, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on 2026-11-06, per the official prices page.

Is St. Peter’s Basilica Closed on the Same Days?

St. Peter’s Basilica does not necessarily close on the same days. It is a separate site with its own management, and the Google Maps listing shows it open every day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:10 p.m., including Sunday. The Museums and the Basilica do not share a calendar.

That said, I would never promise a Basilica visit on a feast day or during a papal ceremony. Access can change at short notice, and the Basilica’s own site is where to check. It’s also worth knowing that the Basilica FAQ says Dome tickets bought online include Basilica entry, to be used 90 minutes before the Dome time, per the St. Peter’s Dome FAQ.

The three places above sit close together, but their entrances are different. The Museums and Sistine Chapel use the entrance on Viale Vaticano, while the Basilica is reached through St. Peter’s Square, where a security check comes first.

Are There Extra Temporary Closures This Winter?

Temporary closures this winter do exist. The official page lists several short ones for the end of 2026, and none of them shut the whole complex for a day. They matter only if you have a very specific plan.

  • New Wing: closed all day on November 5.
  • Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi: closed from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on November 9.
  • All Vatican Museums sectors: closed 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on November 10.
  • Sistine Chapel: closed from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on December 4 and December 18.
  • Castel Gandolfo Museum Complex: closed 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on December 7.

The pattern I’d take from this list: a Sistine Chapel closure in the evening can wreck a late visit. If you have a 5:00 p.m. slot on December 4 or 18, the last entrance to the Chapel is 5:30 p.m., so move to the morning. These figures are the latest published as of November 2026, and the official page can change them.

What Time Do the Vatican Museums Open and Close?

Vatican Museums opening and closing times are 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on a normal day, Monday to Saturday. The Google Maps listing for the Sistine Chapel shows the same hours and marks Sunday as closed, which matches the official page.

If you want to understand how entry slots work, read my guide on when Vatican tickets go on sale each day. Booking early matters because a closed Sunday pushes everyone into the six remaining days.

For a first-time visit, I’d book the earliest slot you can manage. You will move through the Museums with more room, reach the Sistine Chapel with time to spare, and still have the afternoon for the Basilica.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers helps explain why the schedule works the way it does. This is a very small state with a very specific calendar, and every figure below comes from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City.

  • Area: 0.44 km². Everything you want to see is inside a walkable space, so a closed Museums day does not strand you far from the Basilica.
  • Founded: 1929-02-11. That is why February 11 is on the closure list.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. The collections you came to see are protected, which is one reason access is managed so tightly.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. A tiny resident community means holidays are observed by almost everyone who works there.
  • Currency: euro. Ticket prices on the official site are in euros, so I add dollar estimates at the ECB rate.
  • Time zone: Central European Time, UTC+01:00. Check your booking time against Rome time, not your home time.

If you want more background on the state itself, my pages on which city the Vatican is in and what the Vatican Museums are fill in the basics.

How Do You Book Around the Closed Days?

Booking around the closed days starts with a weekday that is not on the closure list, followed by a timed slot. The official ticket site is the only official place to buy online, and the prices page warns about copycat domains that charge much more.

Reduced tickets cost EUR 10 without online booking, about $11 at the ECB rate, and EUR 10 plus EUR 5 with the skip-the-line reservation. Tickets are valid only for the day of issue and cannot be refunded, which is why the closure calendar matters before you click pay.

If you’d rather compare options side by side, I’d book Vatican tickets online after you have picked a safe date. The tours below show timed entry, with and without a guide.

Notice that every one of these is date-specific. A fixed-time ticket for a closed day is useless, so pick the date first and the tour second.

Which option fits which traveler?

The best option for each traveler depends on your style: for seeing the art on your own, an entry ticket with skip-the-line access is the simplest. If you want context for the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, a guided option is the better value, and the early-morning tour is the one I’d choose for a quieter start.

One traveler put the value of that early start well:

“We are so pleased we paid for this tour. It wasn’t cheap but definitely worth every penny, not only to avoid the crowds, but our tour guide was absolutely fabulous.. She was so knowledgeable and friendly and ensured we saw everything whilst making the tour enjoyable and memorable. The museums were as spectacular as the Sistine chapel and Basilica. We would 100% recommend”

Where to Check Dates Before You Go

Checking Vatican dates before you go means using the official calendar, the only reliable source. Open the Museums openings and closures calendar for 2026 to 2027, find your travel week, and write down any date that is crossed out.

Then check the Vatican Museums hours page again a few days before you fly, because temporary closures appear there. My rule is simple: if a date is on the closure list, move it, and if it’s near a feast, verify it twice.

For a bigger picture of how the Vatican fits into a Rome trip, my Vatican and Rome guide walks through the sights, and the Visiting the Vatican hub groups every planning question in one place.

Plan Your Visit Around the Closed Days

The days the Vatican is closed are Sundays, except the last Sunday of the month, plus 13 dates that include January 1, January 6, February 11, March 19, April 6, May 1, June 29, August 14 and 15, November 1, December 8, 25 and 26.

My plan for you is short. Pick a weekday, book a morning slot, check the official calendar for your exact week, and keep a backup day in case of a temporary closure. If you do that, a closed Vatican will never surprise you.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Vatican museum free?

Yes, on the last Sunday of each month, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m. Children under 7 and some other groups also enter free, and the official site lists who qualifies. Free entry does not apply when the last Sunday falls on Easter, June 29, December 25, 26 or 31.

What time does the Vatican close tonight?

On a normal Monday to Saturday the Vatican Museums close at 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. Visitors are asked to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. On the last Sunday of the month the museums close at 2:00 p.m.

What day to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sundays other than the last one, and every date on the official closure list, because the Museums are shut. I'd also be careful with the free last Sunday if you want a calm visit, since a free day tends to attract more people. The official site publishes the exact calendar.

Can I wear jeans to the Vatican?

The official dome rules say clothing suitable for a place of worship is required, with shoulders and knees covered. That means jeans that cover your knees are not a problem on their own, but shorts, short skirts and bare shoulders can be refused.

Is St. Peter's Basilica open on Sunday?

The Maps listing for the Basilica shows it open every day, including Sunday, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:10 p.m. Services and papal events can change access, so check the Basilica's own website before you go.
