Whats a Vatican

By Updated 13 min read

Whats a Vatican? It is Vatican City, a sovereign city-state inside Rome ruled by the pope, and it is also the common name for the Holy See, the central authority of the Catholic Church. It is the smallest country in the world, and it holds St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums.

Whats a Vatican? In everyday speech it means two things at once: a tiny independent state inside the city of Rome, and the government of the Catholic Church that sits there. Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state in Southern Europe, ruled by the pope, and it is the smallest country in the world by area.

I’ll keep this practical. Below I explain the word, the state, the church link, the history and the sights, so you know exactly what you are asking about before you plan a visit. If you only want the highlights, read the short answer first and jump to the section you need.

Whats a Vatican? The Short Answer

Whats a Vatican in short is a walled enclave within Rome that serves as both a country and the headquarters of the Catholic Church. It is formally called the Vatican City State, and it is an enclave surrounded by the city of Rome, Italy.

The size surprises most people. Wikipedia gives an area of 0.49 square kilometres (0.19 square miles) and a population of about 882, which makes it both the smallest country by area and the least populous. You could walk across it in a short time, yet it contains some of the most visited sites in Europe.

Three things sit inside that small space:

  • A state. It has its own territory, its own government and its own euro coins.
  • A church capital. It is the administrative center of the Catholic Church.
  • A museum city. It is a World Heritage Site with St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Apostolic Palace, the Vatican Library and the Vatican Museums.

Our Vatican overview goes deeper on the place as a whole, and the About Vatican City hub collects every background question in one spot.

What Does the Word Vatican Mean?

The word Vatican comes from an old name for the land rather than from the church. Vatican itself is derived from the name of an Etruscan settlement, Vatica or Vaticum, located in the area the Romans called Ager Vaticanus, which means “Vatican territory.”

That Roman district was a marshy area on the west bank of the Tiber, across the river from Rome. Because it was close to the Etruscan city of Veii and was flooded by the Tiber, the Romans considered this part of Rome dismal. Later the name narrowed to Vatican Hill, which is today’s St. Peter’s Square area.

The official names are worth knowing if you read signs or tickets:

  • English: Vatican City State.
  • Italian: Città del Vaticano, or more formally Stato della Città del Vaticano.
  • Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanae, used in official documents.

The modern name was first used in the Lateran Treaty, signed on 11 February 1929. So when a traveler asks me whats a Vatican, the honest answer starts with a hill, a marsh and an Etruscan village, long before any popes.

Vatican vs. Holy See vs. the Church: What Is the Difference?

Vatican vs. Holy See is easiest to sort out this way: the Vatican is a place, the Holy See is the government, and the Catholic Church is the worldwide community of believers. People mix them up because the three are tied together, but they are not the same thing.

Vatican City is governed by the Holy See, the episcopal see of the Diocese of Rome and the central authority of the church worldwide. The Holy See is itself a sovereign entity under international law. It is also the part that deals with other countries.

That is why you hear two different statements that are both true. The Holy See maintains diplomatic relations with 180 states and is an observer state of the United Nations. Vatican City is the territory where that government has its home.

If you want the religious side of the question, I cover it in what the Vatican church is. In short, the pope leads the church, the Holy See administers it, and Vatican City is the ground under their feet.

Is Vatican City Really a Country?

Vatican City is a country, a sovereign state that counts as the world’s smallest fully independent nation-state. The 1929 Lateran Treaty is the document that created it.

It behaves like a country in several ways:

  • It has an area and a population of its own.
  • It uses the euro and issues its own euro coins.
  • It is a de facto member of the Schengen Area.
  • Its government, the Holy See, has diplomatic ties with 180 states.

There is one catch for visitors. You do not need a special visa-style border check to step inside, because the line between Rome and Vatican City is open to the public at St. Peter’s Square. You do pass security screening before entering the basilica or the museums, which is a separate matter from the border.

How Did the Vatican Become a State?

The Vatican became a state after the popes lost their lands in the 1800s and won back a small piece of territory in 1929. The timeline below shows how the story fits together.

Catholic theology holds that Saint Peter, an apostle of Jesus and considered the first pope, was crucified on Vatican Hill in Rome during the 1st century AD. That is the spiritual root of the site, and it is why a basilica stands here today.

  • 1st century AD: Saint Peter is said to have been crucified on Vatican Hill.
  • 756: The Holy See first exercises temporal power over the Papal States, formed with a donation of Frankish territory.
  • 1377: The pope returns to Rome at the end of the Avignon Papacy.
  • 1870: The Kingdom of Italy captures Rome, and the pope declares himself a “prisoner in the Vatican.”
  • 11 February 1929: The Lateran Treaty settles the Roman question and creates the modern state.

All of these dates come from the Wikipedia entry on Vatican City. The Wikidata record for Vatican City lists the inception date as 1929-02-11, which matches the treaty date.

One honest note on numbers: the sources do not agree on every figure. Wikidata lists an area of 0.44 km² and several population values, while the Wikipedia text says 0.49 km² and about 882 people. I would treat both as “under half a square kilometer and under a thousand residents.”

Who Runs the Vatican City State?

The pope runs the Vatican City State as its sole ruler. Vatican City is an absolute monarchy under the pope, who is elected by the College of Cardinals through conclaves.

In daily practice the pope delegates authority. The Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State acts as the state’s legislative body. That means the pope sets the direction while a commission handles the work of the state.

This answers a question that comes up a lot: is a Vatican a pope? No. The pope is the ruler and the head of the church, while the Vatican is the state and the seat of government he leads. The two words are linked but not interchangeable.

What Is in the Vatican? The Main Sights

The main sights in the Vatican are a basilica, a chapel, a palace, a library and a very large museum complex, all inside the walls. These are the places that turn a tiny state into one of the busiest destinations in Rome.

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica is the biggest church most travelers will ever step into, and it is the sight most people picture when they ask whats a Vatican. According to the Maps listing, it is open daily from 7 am to 7:10 pm, though you should check the official St. Peter’s Basilica site before you go because hours can change.

Entry to the basilica itself is free, as one visitor noted below. Climbing the dome costs extra, and the official page explains the details. The lift only goes up to the terrace level, and from the inner ring visitors must climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring of the dome. The visit takes about an hour on average.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

The Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is the main reason many people make the trip. Michelangelo’s fresco The Creation of Adam is the best-known image, and you reach the chapel through the Vatican Museums rather than through the basilica.

According to the Maps listing, the chapel keeps the same schedule as the museums: open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm and closed on Sundays. These are listing hours, not official ones, so confirm them on the Vatican Museums website before you plan around them.

The Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums hold most of the art in the complex. Some ticket listings describe more than 20,000 works by painters such as Michelangelo and Raphael, though I would treat that as a listing claim rather than an official count. If you want the full breakdown of the galleries, read what the Vatican Museums are.

The Apostolic Palace and the Vatican Library

The Apostolic Palace and the Vatican Library appear on Wikipedia’s list of the cultural sites that make Vatican City a World Heritage Site. They are not ordinary tourist stops, so most visitors see the outside or only parts of them as part of a museum route.

Can You Visit the Vatican, and What Do You Need?

You can visit the Vatican, since it is open to everyone, but you need tickets for the museums and the Sistine Chapel, and the lines can be long. My advice is to book a timed slot ahead of time rather than hope for a short wait.

One visitor on Google Maps described the problem plainly:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That experience is why I like timed entry. If you are still deciding which pass fits your trip, the guide to what tickets to get for Vatican City compares the options. And if you want everything in one place, here is where to buy Vatican tickets? with every ticket type side by side.

Tours worth a look

Tours worth a look range from plain entry tickets to guided options. If you want the stories behind the art, a guided option helps. The tours below cover both styles, and they come from GetYourGuide, so I am not the official ticket office. I’d book the cheapest timed ticket if you love wandering alone, and a guided tour if you want context.

Notice one detail in the tour data. The basic entrance ticket excludes a guided tour, the basilica dome, and guaranteed basilica access. Another listing says the basilica is free, but access is not guaranteed and may vary due to crowd control. Plan for that rather than assume it will be open.

Opening hours and last entry

Opening hours are where visitors most often slip up when planning. The museums run Monday to Saturday and close on Sunday according to the Maps data, while the basilica is listed as open every day. To avoid arriving at a closed door, check what time the Vatican opens and what time Vatican City closes for the latest guidance.

What Should You Wear and Bring?

What to wear at the Vatican is simple: dress for a place of worship. On the dome climb, the official page states that shoulders and knees must always be covered, and the same sensible rule is the safest approach for the whole visit.

The official dome page also gives a few rules that help you pack:

  • Only small personal bags are permitted. Large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed.
  • There is no cloakroom or luggage storage service listed on the page.
  • Security checks in St. Peter’s Square are mandatory for all visitors.
  • If you book the dome online, show the QR code at the entrance, on your phone or in print.

Keep your confirmation emails handy. The official page says that if you do not get your QR codes within 30 minutes of booking, you should check your spam folder and then write to the booking address it lists.

A Good Plan for First-Time Visitors

A good plan for first-time visitors does not have to be complicated. I’d split the visit into two parts: museums and the Sistine Chapel first, then the basilica, which is free to enter.

  • Pick a morning museum slot. A timed ticket keeps the wait short.
  • Allow a full half day. The tours above run from about 2 to 4 hours, and the entry-only options let you stay as long as you like until closing.
  • Add the basilica after. Some tours offer it as an option, so read the inclusions first.
  • Eat outside the walls. The pizza place Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci is rated 4.7 on Maps and sits a short way away in Rome.

One traveler with a child in a wheelchair wrote that they skipped the guided option and used an audio guide instead, and still saw most of the sights:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

Whats a Vatican? A Short Wrap-Up

Whats a Vatican comes down to this: a small sovereign state in Rome, ruled by the pope, governed by the Holy See and home to the sights that define Catholic art and history. The word comes from an Etruscan settlement, the state dates to the 1929 Lateran Treaty, and the site is a World Heritage Site.

My advice is simple. Decide whether you want the museums, the basilica or both, book a timed slot, dress with covered shoulders and knees, and confirm prices and hours on the official sites before you travel. When you are ready, look at the tours above or the timed Vatican tickets overview to compare your options.
