Sistine Chapel Tickets Official Site

By Updated 11 min read

Sistine Chapel tickets official site means tickets.museivaticani.va, the Vatican Museums' own online ticket office, and there is no separate Sistine Chapel ticket. Your Vatican Museums ticket covers the chapel on the day it is issued, and it cannot be refunded.

Sistine Chapel tickets official site searches have one correct answer: tickets.museivaticani.va, the online ticket office of the Vatican Museums. The museums themselves state that it is the only official site for purchasing tickets online, and they warn that look-alike domains may charge significantly higher prices.

I wrote this page for visitors who want to be sure they are on the right site before they pay. I cover what the official ticket includes, what it costs, when the chapel is open and when to choose a reseller instead. I am an independent guide, not the ticket office, and I will always send you to the official page to confirm prices and dates.

What Is the Official Site for Sistine Chapel Tickets?

Official site for Sistine Chapel tickets means the Vatican Museums’ ticket portal at tickets.museivaticani.va, which you can reach from the museums’ own prices and tickets page. The chapel has no sales site of its own, because it belongs to the Vatican Museums, and only the museums’ portal issues the original ticket.

Here is the quick test I use. The address ends in .va and begins with museivaticani. The museums list their main website as museivaticani.va, and Wikidata records the same address as the Sistine Chapel’s official website. If you land on a page with a different domain that says “official”, close it.

If you are still comparing options, where to buy Vatican tickets? is the short answer page on this site, and it lays out how official and reseller routes differ.

Is There a Separate Ticket for the Sistine Chapel?

Separate Sistine Chapel ticket is a myth, as there is none. According to the official page, the Vatican Museums entry ticket entitles you to the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and only on the day the ticket is issued.

That matters for how you plan. My advice is to treat the chapel as part of a museum visit, not as a stand-alone stop, and to book the whole visit as one ticket. If you are weighing the museum ticket types, the Vatican Museum tickets guide covers them in more detail.

The ticket is not refundable, which the museums state plainly. So pick your date with care, because you cannot cancel and rebook the same ticket.

The Official Vatican Museums Ticket Portal Explained

Official Vatican Museums ticket portal sales cover timed entry for the museums and the chapel, and the portal also lists free-entry and reduced categories. Reduced and student tickets can be booked online with a “Skip the Line” option. Free tickets for disabled visitors cannot be booked online at all; they are issued at the “Special Permits” and “Welcome Desk” desks in the entrance hall, and the visitor and a companion get priority skip-the-line entry.

For a visit on the last Sunday of the month, the museums point to guided tours that you can reserve through a separate calendar page. Entry itself is free that day.

I find the portal clearest when you work in this order:

  1. Check the opening and closure calendar for your date.
  2. Pick the ticket category that applies to you.
  3. Choose the Skip the Line booking if you want a reserved slot.
  4. Pay, then keep the confirmation for the entrance.

If you prefer a step-by-step walkthrough of the buying process, I explain it in buying official Vatican and Sistine Chapel tickets.

How Much Do Official Sistine Chapel Tickets Cost?

Official Sistine Chapel ticket prices start at EUR 20 for a full ticket bought without online booking and EUR 10 for reduced and student tickets, per the Vatican Museums price list. At the ECB reference rate of 6 November 2026 (1 EUR = 1.1165 USD), EUR 20 is about $22.

Ticket Official price, no online booking With Skip the Line booking About in USD
Full entry EUR 20.00 See the official page about $22
Reduced entry EUR 10.00 EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $11 / $17
Students EUR 10.00 EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $11 / $17
Schools EUR 5.00 EUR 5.00 + 2.00 about $6 / $8
Children below 7 Free Not needed $0

I could not confirm a skip-the-line fee for the full ticket from the page I used, so I left it out. Check the live price on the official site before you decide, because prices and booking fees can change.

For the other categories, the museums describe reduced eligibility here and student eligibility here. If you are not sure you qualify, read those pages first, because you may be asked for proof at the entrance.

Can You Buy Sistine Chapel Tickets in Person or on the Day?

Buying Sistine Chapel tickets in person is possible, since the museums list a price for tickets bought without online booking. The official page gives EUR 20 for a full ticket in that case, but it promises no availability on any given day.

One Google Maps reviewer described the trade-off well:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That experience shows the risk: you may wait, and a late arrival leaves you rushing through the galleries. The museums close at 8:00 p.m. and stop admitting visitors at 6:00 p.m. on regular days, so arriving at 5 p.m. leaves very little time. If you are traveling in a busy week, I would not rely on a walk-up ticket. Reserve a slot, either on the official portal or through a reseller below.

Official Site or Reseller: Which Should You Pick?

The official site versus a reseller comes down to your needs: choose the official site for the lowest face price when your date is open, and a reseller when the official calendar is full or you want a host, audio guide or guided tour. Resellers add a booking fee and sometimes a meeting point away from the museum, which raises the cost.

Here is how the GetYourGuide listings in my data compare. They are independent products, not official tickets:

  • Entrance ticket, Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket: $36.21, rated 4.48 from 160,009 reviews. It includes skip-the-ticket-line entry and an optional audio guide, and you go straight to the Viale Vaticano entrance.
  • Budget skip-the-line ticket: $32.31, rated 4.23 from 13,313 reviews, with a host who walks you to the museum entrance. You redeem it at Via Germanico 8 and arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Guided options: the guided tours run from about $66 to $68 and include a guide and headsets.

The cards below show current prices, ratings and meeting points for the options I would look at first. Prices on GetYourGuide change, so confirm them on the listing.

My recommendation: book through the official portal first, and use these listings when your date has no official space. That keeps your cost down and gives you a fallback. If you want every ticket type side by side, see every ticket type side by side on the homepage.

One common complaint in the traveler summaries is unclear information about what is included. The Fast Entry listing, for example, is escorted entry rather than a guided tour unless you choose the guide option. Read the inclusions before you pay.

How Do You Spot a Fake Ticket Site?

Spotting a fake ticket site starts with the domain: the official online ticket office is tickets.museivaticani.va, and anything else selling “official” Vatican Museums tickets is a reseller. The museums warn that sites with domains similar to the official one may charge significantly higher prices.

These are the checks I run, in order:

  • Domain: it should read tickets.museivaticani.va, not a similar spelling or a different ending.
  • Price: if a full ticket is far above the official EUR 20 plus a small booking fee, you are likely paying a reseller’s markup.
  • Wording: a reseller should say it is a third party. A site that claims to be the museum while charging a high fee is a warning sign.
  • Route: start from the Vatican Museums’ own site and follow its ticket button, instead of searching for tickets and clicking an ad.

Resellers are not scams by definition. Many sell real timed entry at a higher price with a host or a guide. The problem is a site that pretends to be official. If you want to compare what a legitimate reseller adds, what counts as an official Sistine Chapel ticket? goes through the difference in more detail.

When Is the Sistine Chapel Open?

The Sistine Chapel opening hours match those of the Vatican Museums: Monday to Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with final entry at 6:00 p.m. On the last Sunday of each month the museums open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m., and entry is free, according to the official hours page.

Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time. That means a 6:00 p.m. entry gives you far less time than a morning one.

Closures I would note for the coming weeks, all from the same official page:

  • All sectors: closed 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on 10 November.
  • Sistine Chapel: closed from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on 4 December and 18 December, with last entrance at 5:30 p.m.
  • Full-day closures: 8, 25 and 26 December, and 1 and 6 January. Sundays are also closed, except the last Sunday of the month.

The museums publish a 2026-2027 openings and closures calendar. Check it again close to your date, because temporary closures are added.

Sistine Chapel by the Numbers

The Sistine Chapel’s dimensions are easy to picture with these figures from Wikidata, which describe the large, plain, tall room you are walking into. Each one is linked to its source.

  • Length: 40.9 m. That is the long walk down the room from the entrance to the altar wall with The Last Judgment.
  • Width: 13.4 m. The room is narrow for its length, which is why it feels full quickly.
  • Height: 21 m. Look up; the ceiling is the main attraction.
  • Built from: 1473, commissioned by Sixtus IV and designed by Baccio Pontelli.
  • Ceiling size: 4,093 cm by 1,341 cm, painted in fresco by Michelangelo.
  • Ceiling painted: 1508 onward, finished in October 1512 per the museums.

The Sistine Chapel Wikipedia entry adds that Michelangelo painted the ceiling between 1508 and 1512 under Pope Julius II, and The Last Judgment between 1535 and 1541.

“The Sistine Chapel ceiling (Italian: Soffitto della Cappella Sistina), painted in fresco by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art.”

What You See Once the Ticket Gets You In

What you see in the Sistine Chapel comes at the end, because the official ticket admits you to the whole museum and the chapel is the last major room, so pace yourself. The museums describe the 15th-century wall decoration as the Stories of Moses and of Christ, with papal portraits, painted by a team that included Perugino, Botticelli, Ghirlandaio and Rosselli, as the museums’ Sistine Chapel page explains.

Michelangelo’s ceiling has nine central panels from Genesis, and the museums say the work was finished in October 1512. On the altar wall is The Last Judgment.

Is a Guided Visit Worth It?

A guided Sistine Chapel visit is worth it if you want context for the chapel and the museum, while the entrance ticket is enough if you prefer to wander. The guided listings in my data include a guide and headsets, and the travelers who rate them praise the knowledge of the guides.

The two guided options I would compare are the Habemus Tours guided tour at $65.91 and the Vivicos tour with Basilica entry at $67.97. Some travelers say it is unclear whether the Basilica part has a guide, so read the description before you book.

If you only need entry and not a guide, the cheaper entrance listings above do the job. For a wider look at ticket types, the hub of all Vatican ticket guides is a good next stop, and Sistine Chapel tickets for every budget compares the common choices.

Booking Through the Sistine Chapel Tickets Official Site: My Plan

My plan for booking is simple for most visitors. Go to the Sistine Chapel tickets official site, tickets.museivaticani.va, check your date against the closure calendar, and book the Skip the Line option if you qualify for a reduced ticket. If the date is full, take a reseller listing with clear inclusions.

A few final points I would keep in mind:

  • The ticket works only on the day it is issued, and it is non-refundable.
  • Allow time: the chapel comes late in the route, and the halls clear 30 minutes before closing.
  • The Basilica is separate, so do not assume your museum ticket covers it.
  • Check the official ticket guide one more time before you pay, since prices and rules change.

For the combined ticket in plain terms, the combined Museum and Chapel ticket explained is the sibling guide, and the official website walkthrough covers what the screens look like. Whatever route you pick, the Sistine Chapel tickets official site remains the baseline to compare every other price against.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get tickets to the Vatican museum?

Buy them online at tickets.museivaticani.va, the only official online ticket office, or buy at the door without online booking. The online route adds a skip-the-line fee on reduced tickets, and tickets are valid only on the day they are issued. If the official calendar shows no space, a reseller's timed ticket is the usual backup.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sundays, because the museums are closed except on the last Sunday of the month. Also avoid the official closure dates, such as 1 November, 8 December, and 25 and 26 December. The last Sunday is free, so I would expect it to be busy, and I would not plan around it unless the price matters most.

How to enter Sistine Chapel for free?

Free entry to the Vatican Museums, which includes the chapel, applies on the last Sunday of the month, to children below age 7, and to some other groups listed by the museums. Disabled visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67% also enter free and get priority entry. Free disability tickets are issued at the Museums' desks, not online.

What is the best time of day to visit the Sistine Chapel?

The museums are open 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday, with final entry at 6:00 p.m. One Google Maps reviewer suggested going after 3 p.m. when the cruise ship tours are over. If you go late, remember that visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing.

Can you walk from Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica?

The Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums, and the Basilica has its own address on Piazza San Pietro. A Vatican Museums ticket does not include the Basilica, as the tour listings below make clear. Plan the Basilica as a separate stop with its own entrance.
