Vatican Bag Policy

By Updated 11 min read

Vatican bag policy comes down to one rule: small personal bags go in, while luggage, suitcases and bulky rucksacks must be left in the free Vatican Museums cloakroom. St. Peter's Basilica and its Dome offer no such storage, so carry only a small bag there.

Vatican bag policy is simple once you know the two halves of it. At the Vatican Museums, visitors must leave luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, packages and containers in the cloakroom when staff judge them unsuitable because of their size or nature. At St. Peter’s Basilica and its Dome, there is no such storage, so the safest plan is to arrive with a small bag and nothing else.

I wrote this page so you can pack once, pass security once and skip the stress at the door. Below you will find what counts as a small bag, what the cloakroom does, which items get stopped and how clothing rules tie in.

Vatican Luggage Rules at a Glance

Vatican luggage rules differ between the Museums and the Basilica, so a side-by-side view helps. The table below condenses the Vatican bag policy as the official pages word it.

Item or situation Vatican Museums St. Peter’s Basilica and Dome
Luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, packages Leave in the cloakroom if staff find them unsuitable by size or nature Large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed on the Dome climb
Small personal bag Fine to carry Only small personal bags are permitted on the Dome climb
Knives, scissors, metal tools Must be stored in the cloakroom Do not bring them; security checks apply to all visitors
Cloakroom Free of charge No cloakroom or luggage storage for the Dome climb
Leaving bags before you continue Do not leave baggage in the Museums if you go on to the Basilica Plan to carry only what you need

What Does the Vatican Bag Policy Allow in the Museums?

The Vatican bag policy in the Museums favors small personal bags. Under the official rule, any luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, packages and containers that staff consider unsuitable because of their size or nature must be left in the cloakroom.

Notice the wording. The Museums do not publish a long list of banned bag models on that page. Staff at the security point decide. That means a compact handbag, a small crossbody bag or a slim daypack almost never causes trouble, while a big hiking pack or a wheeled case almost always does.

My advice: if you have to ask yourself whether your bag is too big, it probably is. Shrink it before you reach the entrance, because a bag that fails the check sends you to the cloakroom, and that costs you time inside your booked slot.

What counts as a small bag?

A small bag is only defined loosely by the official pages, which say “small personal bags” for the Dome and “size or nature” for the Museums. No size in centimeters appears on those pages, so I will not invent one. In plain terms, think of a bag that holds your phone, wallet, tickets, passport, a small bottle and a light layer, and nothing much more.

If you pack more than that, you are in cloakroom territory. That is not a disaster, but it changes how you plan the day, as the next section explains.

Where Is the Vatican Museums Cloakroom and Does It Cost Money?

The Vatican Museums cloakroom costs nothing, according to the official page. Visitors use it before going into the exhibition spaces, and the same service accepts knives, scissors and metal tools. The Museums also publish cloakroom regulations as a PDF if you want the full terms.

Here is the catch I want you to plan around. The Museums remind visitors who continue to the Basilica not to leave their baggage in the Museums. So a cloakroom is a good fit if your day ends with the Sistine Chapel, and a poor fit if you plan to walk on to St. Peter’s afterward.

The Museums also state that they cannot be held responsible for the loss of personal belongings. Keep passports, cards, phones and medication on you, and leave only the bulky items in the cloakroom. If you do lose something, report it at the nearest security point; the Museums list an email address for visitors who have already left, and unclaimed items go to the Vatican Gendarmerie at the end of the day.

Vatican Bag Policy for St. Peter’s Basilica and the Dome

The Vatican bag policy at St. Peter’s Basilica is less convenient still, because storage is the sticking point. For the Dome, the official FAQ says that only small personal bags are permitted, that large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed, and that the excerpt of the page mentions no cloakroom or luggage storage service for the climb.

Before you reach the Dome, you must pass the security checks in St. Peter’s Square. Visitors who buy online follow an assigned route, Sobieski or Lambertini, and security checks remain mandatory for everyone, as the Dome FAQ explains.

One traveler on Google Maps described the morning routine well:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

That review shows why a light bag matters. A short line moves fast when everyone has a small bag and nothing metal in the pockets.

Climbing the Dome with a bag

Climbing the Dome with a bag adds a physical limit on top of the rule. The lift goes only to the terrace level, and from the inner ring visitors climb 320 steps to reach the outer ring, based on the same FAQ. A bulky bag on 320 steps is a poor idea, so a small bag worn across the body is much easier.

The Dome ticket bought online also includes entry to the Basilica, which you are asked to do 90 minutes before your Dome time. That means you carry your bag through two checks in one visit.

Can You Bring a Backpack or Suitcase to the Vatican?

A backpack or suitcase is handled differently by size: suitcases are refused at the Museums, and large backpacks are refused on the Dome climb. Small backpacks fall in a gray area that staff judge by size and nature, so keep yours compact and flat.

If you arrive straight from a hotel or station with wheeled luggage, solve that first. The official pages describe a cloakroom inside the Museums for items staff find unsuitable, not a baggage service for travelers passing through Rome. I would leave suitcases at your accommodation or at a storage service in Rome, and walk to the Vatican with a small bag only.

Planning a day that covers both the Museums and the Basilica? Then take the lightest bag you can, because the Museums ask you not to leave baggage there while you go on to St. Peter’s. For a wider picture of how the sights fit together, my guide to the Vatican and Rome shows the layout.

What Else Does the Vatican Bag Policy Stop at Security?

The Vatican bag policy at security stops knives, scissors and metal tools of any type, which must go in the Museums cloakroom. The Museums say this protects visitors and the artistic patrimony. Everyone passes through security before the galleries, so pocket knives, multi-tools and small scissors in a toiletry kit will be flagged.

Animals are not allowed in the Museums, even small ones, with two exceptions. Guide dogs for blind or partially sighted visitors are allowed if they have a muzzle and lead, as are animals for certified pet therapy. Leave the pet at your accommodation.

Staff also look at what you carry in plain view. The Museums extend their decorum requirement to visible personal objects and distinctive signs, such as tattoos, that may offend Catholic morality, the Catholic religion and common decency. A T-shirt with an offensive slogan, for instance, could cause the same trouble as a banned item.

Dress Code Rules That Go With Your Bag

Dress code rules are checked at the same time as your bag, so pack with both in mind. Entry to the Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors. Sleeveless or low-cut garments, shorts above the knee, miniskirts and hats are not permitted.

Many visitors carry a scarf or light cover-up in their bag for this reason. It takes little space, and it solves the problem if you leave a hotel in sleeveless clothes on a hot day. For the Dome, the FAQ confirms that shoulders and knees must always be covered.

Hats are the item people forget. The Museums list hats among the things not permitted, so a sun hat that fits in your small bag is not much use inside. Plan to put it away before the check, and bring sunscreen instead.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers shows why space is tight and security is strict. Wikidata gives these figures for the state:

  • Area: 0.44 km². Everything you visit sits in a tiny space, so queues for security build up quickly.
  • Founded: 11 February 1929, the date of the modern state, which is also when the Lateran Treaty set it up.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Tens of thousands of visitors a day are guests in a very small place.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site, which is why the rules protect the art.
  • Currency: euro. Bring a card for the cafe if you leave your wallet in the cloakroom.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs at security will mostly use Italian and English.

How to Pack for the Vatican Without Paying for Storage

Packing for the Vatican without paying for storage means taking one small bag with only the essentials. This is the list I would follow:

  • Passport or ID, and your ticket or QR code on your phone or on paper
  • A card and a little cash
  • A phone with a charged battery
  • A scarf or light layer for shoulders
  • A small water bottle, if you want one (the official page does not list bottles, so be ready for staff to decide)

Skip the knife, the multi-tool, the big camera bag and any wheeled case. If a bag is needed for souvenirs after the visit, buy a small foldable one on the way out rather than carrying a big one in.

QR codes matter for the Basilica Dome. After booking you receive the confirmation voucher and then the QR codes for all participants, which you show during access checks, either on a device or in print. Keeping them on your phone means one less paper to carry.

Booking a slot that works with a light bag

A timed slot suits a light-bag day, because you skip the long ticket line and head straight to the security check. If you want to see every ticket type side by side, the page on how to book Vatican tickets online is where I would start.

The tours below all cover the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, and some add the Basilica. Check the meeting point on each listing, because several begin at a partner office and not at the gate, which changes how long you carry your bag before security.

Those with a guide are handy if you want someone to walk you through the check in. Those with only an entrance ticket suit you if you prefer to go at your own pace, which one traveler described like this:

“We were unable to do this with a guide due to my child being in a wheelchair. We did the tour on our own with an audio guide. The Vatican was beautiful and we did get to see most of the sights”

Where to Go After Security

After security, the route is long and mostly indoors. The Museums list relaxation areas with seats along the itinerary, in the Courtyard of the Cuirasses, the Courtyard of the Pinacoteca, the Square Garden and the Courtyard of the Pinecone. A short rest is much nicer when you carry a light bag.

The map below shows the main sights and a place to eat nearby after you leave.

Does the Vatican Bag Policy Change If You Change Your Ticket?

The Vatican bag policy does not change with your ticket: it applies to every visitor, whatever the ticket type, on the day. What can change is the ticket itself, and that is covered by separate policies on each seller’s page.

If your plans shift, my notes on the refund policy and the cancellation policy explain the steps. Wondering whether you can change the date on a ticket? That page covers it, and the name change rules cover who can use a booking.

Pack Light and Plan the Day

The Vatican bag policy in short: carry a small personal bag, leave luggage and bulky rucksacks in the free Museums cloakroom or at your hotel, and expect no storage at St. Peter’s Basilica or the Dome. Keep knives, scissors and metal tools out of your pack altogether.

My final tip is to pack the night before and test the bag by wearing it for ten minutes. If it feels heavy, it will feel heavier on 320 steps. Before you go, confirm the latest rules on the official Museums page, because staff can change what they accept.

Compare timed options and choose the one that matches your day when you book Vatican tickets online, then walk to the gate with a light bag and a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear shorts in the Vatican?

Not shorts above the knee. The Vatican Museums list shorts above the knee, miniskirts, sleeveless or low-cut garments and hats as not permitted. For the Dome climb, shoulders and knees must always be covered.

Are sandals ok in the Vatican?

The official rules I found do not ban sandals by name. They focus on covered shoulders and knees and on decorum, so open shoes are fine as long as the rest of your outfit meets those rules. Check the Museums' useful-information page before you go.

Can I bring a water bottle into the Vatican?

The official page does not list water bottles by name. Staff decide whether an item is suitable on account of its size or nature, so pack a small bottle in a small bag and be ready to leave it in the cloakroom at the Museums if asked.

How to visit the Vatican?

Book a timed entry for the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, dress with shoulders and knees covered, and bring only a small bag. St. Peter's Basilica is a separate entrance in St. Peter's Square, with its own security check.
