Is Vatican City closed on Sunday?

Is Vatican City closed on Sunday? Not as a place, but most of what visitors come to see is. The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays, with one big exception: the last Sunday of each month, when they open for free, according to the official opening days page.

I’ll break this down by what you actually want to see. Some parts of Vatican City stay open, some close, and one Sunday a month turns the rule upside down. Here is how to plan around all three.

Is Vatican City Closed on Sunday? The Short Answer

Vatican City is not closed on Sunday, and you can stroll into St. Peter’s Square on any day of the week. The museums are the part that shuts. Their official page lists “Sunday (except the last Sunday of each month, if not in conjunction with the Feast of 29 June, Saints Peter and Paul)” under closures.

So the answer depends on what is on your list. The square and the basilica are open. The museums, the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms are not, unless it is the last Sunday of the month. Many visitors get caught out because they hear “the Vatican is open” and assume the museums are included.

Here is the rule I give friends. If you want Michelangelo’s ceiling, plan for Monday to Saturday. If you only want the basilica and the atmosphere of the square, Sunday works fine.

Vatican Sunday Opening Hours by Section

Vatican Sunday opening hours differ by section, and the table below lays out what to expect on a regular Sunday. Opening hours for the museums come from the official hours page. Basilica hours come from Google Maps data, so confirm them on the basilica’s own website.

St. Peter’s Basilica Open, 7 a.m. to 7:10 p.m. (Maps data) Same hours (Maps data)

Monday to Saturday the museums run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with final entry at 6 p.m. The official page also asks visitors to leave the halls 30 minutes before closing. Notice the difference between a normal day and the free Sunday: the Sunday window is only five hours long.

If you are comparing days, my advice is simple. A weekday gives you six extra hours, a skip-the-line option and far fewer crowds than the free Sunday. If you want a deeper look at which Sundays work for which sights, my guide to the Vatican on a Sunday goes through them one by one.

Is the Shut Vatican on Sundays Just a Museum Rule?

The Sunday closure is mostly a museum rule, since it applies to the Vatican Museums, which include the Sistine Chapel, the Raphael Rooms and the Pinacoteca. The museums’ homepage lists these galleries as part of one complex and one ticket.

Vatican City itself is a tiny state. Wikidata gives its area as 0.44 km², and Wikipedia describes it as an enclave inside Rome. The museums are one set of buildings inside it. The basilica, the square and the surrounding streets work on their own schedules.

That is why you see conflicting answers online. One person says “the Vatican is open on Sunday” because they walked into the basilica. Another says “closed” because the museum gates were locked. Both are right.

The Last Sunday of the Month: Free Entry

The last Sunday of the month brings free entry, with the Vatican Museums open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and final entry at 12:30 p.m. The official hours page notes that guided tours are possible by reservation that day.

The free Sunday does not apply when the last Sunday coincides with Easter Sunday, June 29 (Saints Peter and Paul), December 25, December 26 or December 31. The museums’ price page adds that the free day is subject to their calendar of openings and closures. Always check that calendar before you plan around it. The official 2026-2027 openings and closures PDF is the one to trust.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

The review above shows a common problem. Visitors who arrive late and rush through the galleries often regret it. On the free Sunday that risk is bigger, because the doors shut at 2 p.m. and the final entry is 12:30 p.m.

Should you take the free Sunday?

The free Sunday is worth taking or skipping depending on how well you handle crowds. Free entry brings a lot of people into the same galleries over five hours. I would only recommend it if your trip dates leave no other option, or if budget is the main concern.

If you can pick a different day, I’d book a timed slot Monday to Saturday. You will get longer hours, and the pace in the Sistine Chapel is calmer. For a closer look at how the free day works, see my page on whether you can tour the Vatican on Sundays.

Can You See the Sistine Chapel on a Sunday?

The Sistine Chapel on a Sunday is possible only on the free last Sunday of the month. The Sistine Chapel is reached through the Vatican Museums, so it closes whenever they do. Google Maps data for the chapel also shows Sunday as closed.

This is a common source of disappointment. People assume the chapel is a separate church with its own Sunday schedule. It is not. The museum ticket covers both the galleries and the chapel, and the official price page says the entry ticket is valid for the day it is issued.

If your only free day is a regular Sunday, my advice is to shift the museum visit to Saturday or Monday and use Sunday for the basilica and a walk around the square. You still get the Sistine Chapel, just on a different day.

What Stays Open: St. Peter’s Basilica and the Square

St. Peter’s Basilica stays open and is the highlight of a Vatican Sunday. Maps data lists it as open from 7 a.m. to 7:10 p.m. on Sundays, matching the weekday hours. Entry is free, and one visitor wrote that if you are only there for a free visit, you can see most of it in about 40 minutes.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

Sunday can be busy at the basilica because of services and ceremonies. I can’t tell you the schedule from the data I have, so check the basilica’s own website before you go. If you want to attend Mass, my pages on Sunday Mass at the Vatican and Sunday Mass in Vatican City cover what to expect.

A practical tip: arrive early. The reviewer above got in line at 6:45 a.m. and still entered quickly. Security checks are the bottleneck, not the doors.

Other Days the Vatican Museums Are Closed

Other Vatican Museums closure days exist beyond Sundays. The official page lists these closure dates: January 1 and 6, February 11, March 19, April 6, May 1, June 29, August 14 and 15, November 1, and December 8, 25 and 26. These are in addition to regular Sundays.

Many of these match Vatican public holidays. The Nager.Date holiday data for 2026 lists, among others:

  • January 1: Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
  • February 11: anniversary of the foundation of Vatican City
  • March 19: Saint Joseph’s Day
  • April 6: Easter Monday
  • June 29: Saint Peter and Saint Paul
  • August 15: Assumption Day
  • November 1: All Saints Day
  • December 8: Immaculate Conception
  • December 25 and 26: Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day

The museums also post temporary closures. At the time of writing, the official page lists a short closure of all sectors on November 10 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., and the Sistine Chapel closing early at 6 p.m. on December 4 and December 18. Check that page again right before you travel, because the list changes.

If you search “why is the Vatican closed today,” the answer is almost always one of three things: it is a regular Sunday, it is a holiday on the list above, or there is a short temporary closure. Reading the official page takes one minute and saves a wasted trip.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers gives the Sunday question some context through a handful of facts. Every figure below comes from Wikidata’s Vatican City record.

  • Area: 0.44 km². It is tiny, so you can walk from the square to the museum entrance, but the walk along the wall takes longer than people expect.
  • Founded: February 11, 1929. That is why February 11 is both a holiday and a museum closure day.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Very few people live here, so there are no ordinary Sunday shops or cafés as you would find in Rome.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. This is why the collections draw visitors every day they are open.
  • Currency: euro. You pay in euros for tickets and food.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs and announcements are often in Italian first.
  • Time zone: Central European Time (UTC+01:00). Check your booking times in local time.

What Does Entry Cost on a Normal Day?

Entry on a normal day costs EUR 20.00 for the official full ticket without online booking, about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06 (ECB rates). The reduced ticket is EUR 10.00, about $11.17. With “Skip the Line” booking on the official site, the reduced ticket is EUR 10.00 plus EUR 5.00, so EUR 15.00 in total, about $16.75.

Children below age 7 enter free, as do visitors with a certified invalidity of at least 67%. The official price page lists the full details and warns that tickets cannot be refunded. It also warns about scam sites that copy the official domain and charge more. Prices change, so confirm them on the official page before you pay.

Compared with that, the last Sunday of the month costs nothing. The price you pay instead is time: the shorter window and denser crowds.

How to Plan Around the Sunday Closure

Planning around the Sunday closure is easier if your trip includes a Sunday and you choose one of these three plans.

  1. Move the museums to Saturday or Monday. This is my default advice. You get the full 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. schedule and a timed slot.
  2. Use Sunday for the basilica and the square. Both are open, and you avoid museum crowds altogether.
  3. Go on the free last Sunday. Arrive before 9 a.m. and expect to be inside by 12:30 p.m. at the latest.

Whichever you pick, book ahead for non-Sunday slots. If you want to compare ticket types before choosing, you can see every ticket type side by side on my main guide. For an overview of how Sunday ticketing differs, my page on Vatican tickets for Sunday is a good next stop.

Skip-the-line options for Monday to Saturday

Skip-the-line tickets for Monday to Saturday are my pick, ideally with timed entry. The first tour below is a plain entrance ticket with an audio guide option, and the others add a guide. Since the museums are closed on Sundays, choose a Monday to Saturday date when you book. Prices below are in US dollars as listed.

Reviewers of the first option praised value for money, and many mention that timed entry made access easier. One traveler wrote:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”
Sukanta, Ireland, 2026-11 · GetYourGuide review about Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket

If you prefer a guide who explains the galleries, the guided options include licensed guides and headsets. The Crown Tours option adds an optional basilica upgrade and pre-reserved dome access with an elevator.

Do not forget that none of these tours changes the museum calendar. A ticket for a closed day is worthless, so double-check the weekday before paying. If you are ready to book, my guide to Vatican tickets shows which option suits each type of visitor.

Questions Visitors Ask About Sunday Visits

Sunday visit questions come up often, and a few more are worth covering, and I have answers for the ones the data supports.

Can you visit the Vatican on a Sunday at all? Yes. The basilica and square are open, and the museums open on the last Sunday of the month. My page on whether you can visit the Vatican on a Sunday goes deeper into each case.

What about a Sunday at the museums when you only have one day in Rome? Choose the free Sunday if it lines up. Otherwise, spend the Sunday at the basilica and book the museums for another day.

Is the schedule the same every year? The rule is stable, but the closure dates change. Always check the current openings and closures PDF linked above.

All of these answers come back to the same point. The Vatican has a clear calendar, and a couple of minutes on the official site will tell you which Sundays are open.

Final Advice: Is Vatican City Closed on Sunday for Your Trip?

Whether Vatican City is closed on Sunday on your travel day comes down to a quick check. Check three things: whether it is the last Sunday of the month, whether it clashes with Easter or one of the December dates, and whether a temporary closure is listed. If none of those apply, expect the museums and Sistine Chapel to be closed, and the basilica and square to be open.

My recommendation is to book the museums on a weekday with a timed slot, keep Sunday for St. Peter’s, and treat the free last Sunday as a bonus rather than a plan. Facts here are the latest published as of November 2026, and the official hours page is the place to confirm them before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sistine Chapel closed on Sunday?

Yes, on most Sundays. The Sistine Chapel is part of the Vatican Museums visit, so it follows the museum calendar and opens on Sunday only on the last Sunday of the month, when entry is free and runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

What time does the Vatican museum close?

From Monday to Saturday the Vatican Museums are open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with final entry at 6 p.m. Visitors must leave the halls 30 minutes before closing time, so plan to be done by about 7:30 p.m.

Is St. Peter's Basilica open on Sundays?

Maps data for the basilica lists Sunday hours of 7 a.m. to 7:10 p.m., the same as every other day. Hours can change for papal ceremonies, so check the basilica's website before you go.

Is the last Sunday of the month really free?

Yes. The official Vatican Museums site lists free entry on the last Sunday of the month, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with final entry at 12:30 p.m. It does not apply if that Sunday falls on Easter, June 29, December 25, 26 or 31.

Can I book a guided tour on a Sunday?

On the free last Sunday, the museums say guided tours are possible by reservation. On other Sundays the museums are closed, so I would book a Monday to Saturday slot instead.
