How to go to Vatican?

By Updated 11 min read

How to go to Vatican City: take Rome's Metro Line A to Ottaviano and walk about 10 minutes to the walls, then head to the entrance for the sight you want. The Basilica and St. Peter's Square are free to enter, while the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel need a timed ticket.

How to go to Vatican City is easier than most first-time visitors expect, because the state sits entirely inside Rome and you reach it on foot from the city’s streets. Vatican City is a landlocked city-state ruled by the pope, an enclave within Rome. There is no border crossing to queue at, but there are three very different entrances, and picking the wrong one costs you a long walk around the walls.

My advice is simple: decide what you want to see first, then pick the entrance. In this guide I cover the metro route, the walk, which gate serves which sight, what to book, and what to wear so you are not turned away at security.

Getting to Vatican City: The Short Answer

Getting to Vatican City is fastest for most visitors on Rome’s Metro Line A, riding to the Ottaviano stop. One operator’s meeting-point notes call Ottaviano a 10-minute walk from the local office near the Museums, and another places its meeting square 400 meters from the Ottaviano stop.

From there you walk. Vatican City covers only 0.44 square kilometers, so once you are at the walls nothing is far away. The only real question is which side of the walls you need. If you start from elsewhere in the city, my sibling guide on how do you get to the Vatican from Rome? compares the other transport options in more detail.

How to Go to Vatican City: Which Entrance Do You Need?

How to go to Vatican City depends more on the entrance you choose than on the transport you take. The Basilica and the Museums are two separate doors with two separate queues, on different sides of the state. Match your plan to the right row below.

The Basilica address on Google Maps is Piazza San Pietro, 00120 Città del Vaticano. The Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano, according to the meeting instructions on the standard entrance ticket. The Dome follows the Basilica’s rules: the Basilica’s own Dome FAQ says you must pass the security checks in St. Peter’s Square first.

How Far Is It to the Vatican, and What Does the Walk Look Like?

The distance to the Vatican from the Ottaviano metro stop is roughly a 10-minute walk to the Museums area, going by the operators’ own directions quoted above. Distances inside the state are tiny. With an area of 0.44 km² on Wikidata, the whole country is smaller than most city parks.

The longer walk is the one between the two main entrances. St. Peter’s Square and the Museums are on different sides of the walls, so I never plan to do both on foot without a gap in the schedule. If you have a timed Museum slot in the morning, I would see the Museums first, then walk round to the Square for the Basilica afterward.

One of the tour meeting points is worth remembering because it trips people up: one operator warns that St. Peter’s Square is not its meeting point. Read the meeting instructions on any booking before you leave the hotel, because many of them start at a partner office, not at the gate.

What Is the Best Way to Visit the Vatican?

The best way to visit the Vatican is to reserve a timed Museums entry ahead of time and use the Basilica as a free add-on the same day. That way you skip the biggest queue, the ticket line, and still see St. Peter’s.

Here is how I rank the main options:

  • Self-guided with a skip-the-line ticket. The standard entrance ticket uses a dedicated entrance and, according to its listing, you collect an audio guide at a dedicated desk inside the Museums if you chose that option. It suits people who like their own pace.
  • Escorted entry. Some operators meet you in town and walk you to the gate. One listing is explicit that it is escorted entry, not a guided tour.
  • Guided tour. A licensed guide explains the galleries and the Sistine Chapel, which is where first-timers get the most from the visit. Several tours below include a guide and headsets.

If you want every ticket type side by side, my main page on Vatican tickets lays them out and links to the booking options. Prices change, so I treat the figures on the listings as rough indications and confirm them at the time of booking.

As one traveler put it, the standard ticket was good “value for money” and “really helpful”.

Can You Just Walk Into the Vatican for Free?

Walking into the Vatican for free works for St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica, but the Museums and the Sistine Chapel will not let you in without a ticket. The Basilica is described in the tour exclusions as free of charge, though access is not guaranteed because crowd control can change it.

Security is the catch. Everyone goes through a check, and the line can be long in the middle of the day. A Google Maps reviewer wrote that they arrived at 6:45 am, found a line already forming and still got in quickly, and that the free visit takes about 40 minutes.

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”

If that is your plan, my page on visiting the Vatican without tickets covers what you can and cannot reach. For the Museums, a ticket is not optional. The Museums’ own site lists a reduced rate for students up to and including 25 with a document showing enrolment for the current year. Visitors who buy a reduced ticket without entitlement have to buy a new full-price one, and the reduced ticket is cancelled without a refund.

How to Get In Once You Arrive

Getting in once you arrive follows the same steps at every gate: security first, then your ticket. For the Museums, the ticket instructions say to show your voucher to the security guards at the entrance, then scan it at the online box office after the check. Do not arrive outside your assigned time slot.

For the Dome, the Basilica’s official FAQ says to show the QR code on your phone or in print. You get a voucher email straight after booking, a second email with the QR codes, and a third email 24 to 14 hours before the visit with codes for the digital audio guide. If the second email does not arrive within 30 minutes, check your spam folder and write to the address given on the official Dome help page.

A few practical points from the same page:

  • The Dome visit lasts about 1 hour on average.
  • The lift goes only to the terrace level, so you climb 320 steps from there to the outer ring.
  • Only small personal bags are allowed, and there is no cloakroom or luggage storage.

If you are mainly worried about the entrance procedure itself, my page on getting in the Vatican walks through it step by step.

What Should I Wear When I Go to Vatican City?

What to wear to Vatican City is simple whichever way you travel: cover your shoulders and knees. That is the rule the Basilica publishes for the Dome, and it is stated on the official Dome FAQ as clothing appropriate for a place of worship.

Can you wear jeans? Full-length jeans cover the knees, so they meet the rule as it is written. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops are the usual causes of refusal, and I would not risk an argument at the gate after traveling across the city. A light scarf in your bag fixes most problems in seconds.

Pack light, too. Large backpacks, trolleys and bulky luggage are not allowed on the Dome climb, and the Basilica offers no storage, so leave the big bag at your hotel.

What Days Should You Avoid the Vatican?

The days to avoid at the Vatican start with Sunday if the Museums and the Sistine Chapel are your main goal, since Google Maps lists both as closed then. The Basilica is listed as open daily, which makes Sunday a Basilica-and-Square day only.

Monday to Saturday the Museums are listed at 8 am to 8 pm, and the Basilica at 7 am to 7:10 pm every day. These are Maps listings, not the official calendar, so I always check the official opening hours page for temporary closures before I fix a date. If you are hoping to attend a service, read my guide to attending Mass at the Vatican first, since services change what part of the Basilica is open.

One Google Maps reviewer of the Museums described arriving around 5 pm and waiting 30 to 40 minutes for tickets, then rushing through the galleries before closing time. That is the cost of leaving it to the last minute.

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers gives the visit some scale, with a few figures drawn from Wikidata’s entry for Vatican City:

  • Area: 0.44 km². The whole state is tiny, so after you reach the walls the distances are short. It is the walk between gates that costs time.
  • Population: 949 (2024). Very few people live here, which is why most of what you see is museum, basilica and offices.
  • Inception: 11 February 1929. That is the date of the modern state, created by the Lateran Treaty, so the passes and procedures you meet today are fairly new in the city’s long history.
  • Heritage designation: World Heritage Site. Protection is why bags, clothing and security rules are strict.
  • Currency: the euro. You pay in euros here, as in the rest of Rome.
  • Official languages: Italian and Latin. Signs at the gates are mostly Italian, and English is common at ticket desks.
  • Time zone: Central European Time (UTC+01:00). Check your slot against local time, not your phone’s home clock.

For a wider overview of the state and its sights, my Vatican guide is the place to start, and the About Vatican City hub collects the rest of this topic.

Ways to Reach Vatican City and Pick the Right Tour

Ways to reach Vatican City include a tour that meets you at a fixed point, which settles most route questions if you would rather skip the logistics. The meeting points vary a lot, so read them closely.

  • One operator meets you at a square and the listing gives the Ottaviano metro stop as the landmark.
  • Another asks you to check in at an office on Via Sebastiano Veniero and has a host walk you to the entrance.
  • A guided tour at an office on Via Mocenigo sits a couple of minutes from the Museums exit, according to its meeting instructions.

The tours below are the ones I would compare first. The guided option adds a licensed guide and headsets, and some options add St. Peter’s Basilica or Dome access. Read what each one excludes before paying, because a few leave out Basilica entry.

For a general plan of the day, from which gallery to see first to how long to allow, my article on how do I plan the whole visit? goes further. If you are arriving from a different part of the city, reaching the city-state has routes from other directions.

Your Practical Wrap-Up on How to Go to Vatican City

How to go to Vatican City comes down to a short plan. Ride Line A to Ottaviano, walk to the entrance that matches your ticket, carry covered shoulders and knees, and keep your bag small. Book a timed Museums slot ahead, and treat the free Basilica as a flexible add-on.

Confirm opening hours on the Vatican Museums’ official site the week you travel, because closures happen and I cannot promise today’s listing holds. When you are ready to choose, compare the options for Vatican tickets and pick the one that fits your pace. That is how to go to Vatican City without wasting your morning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official website for buying tickets to the Vatican museums?

The official site of the Vatican Museums is museivaticani.va, and its "Organise your visit" section is where tickets and reduced-rate rules are explained. Always start there to confirm current prices and opening hours. Third-party sellers such as GetYourGuide offer skip-the-line options with extras, but they are not the official ticket office.

Can I wear jeans to Vatican City?

The rule published by St. Peter's Basilica is that shoulders and knees must be covered. Full-length jeans cover the knees, so they meet the rule as written, but ripped or cropped styles and sleeveless tops can get you turned away. Pack a light scarf or shirt to be safe.

Is there a McDonald's inside the Vatican?

I have no verified information about fast-food chains inside Vatican City, so I would not plan a meal around one. Eating just outside the walls is simple: Ristorante Pizzeria Castello on Via delle Fornaci is rated 4.7 on Google Maps and open 11 am to 11 pm daily.

What days to avoid the Vatican?

Avoid Sunday if the Museums and Sistine Chapel are your goal, because Google Maps lists both as closed that day. St. Peter's Basilica is listed as open every day. Closures for holidays and special events change, so check the official hours page before you go.

Do I need a passport to walk into Vatican City?

Vatican City is an enclave inside Rome, and St. Peter's Square is reached on foot from Rome's streets. You will, however, pass security checks before the Basilica, and online ticket holders may be asked to show their QR codes. I carry photo ID anyway when I book timed entries.
