Sur quel site peut-on acheter des tickets pour le Vatican is the first question I’d settle before anything else, because a wrong click here costs real money. The short answer is one official portal, plus a small group of licensed resellers that sell the same entry with extras. This guide shows you which is which, what the official prices are, and how to avoid the look-alike sites that charge far more.

I’ll explain it in plain English for a traveler who may not read Italian: what each site sells, what it costs, and when I’d choose one over the other. Everything below comes from the Vatican Museums’ own pages, public data and the traveler reviews in the booking listings. Prices and rules change, so I point you to the official page for each number.

Sur Quel Site Peut-on Acheter des Tickets pour le Vatican? The Short Answer

The official site for Vatican tickets is tickets.museivaticani.va, and it is the only one. The Vatican Museums call it the only official site for purchasing tickets online, and they warn about look-alike domains that charge significantly higher prices.

Everything else is a reseller or a tour operator. Those are legal businesses, but they are not the Vatican Museums. They buy or reserve entry and sell it back to you, usually with a booking fee, a meeting point near the museum, an audio guide or a guide.

I’d give you this simple rule. If you want the lowest price and you are happy to book directly, use the official portal. If you want a guaranteed meeting point, a guide or a bundle with St. Peter’s Basilica, use a reseller and read what is included.

If you want the full picture of every ticket type side by side, my page on Vatican tickets compares them in one place.

How Can You Tell the Official Vatican Ticket Site From a Fake?

The official Vatican ticket site always shows tickets.museivaticani.va in the address bar, while the museum’s main site sits on museivaticani.va. If the domain differs by even one word, close the tab.

Visitors checking Vatican tickets on a phone near the Vatican Museums entrance, showing which site to use to buy ticketsBook aheadVatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance TicketCheck availability · from $36

The Vatican Museums advise you to always check that you are buying through the official portal. That matters because the scam sites are built to look right. They use the museum’s photos and similar names, and they charge a markup.

Here are the red flags I’d look for:

  • A domain that is not on museivaticani.va, such as a name that mixes “Vatican”, “tickets” and “Rome”.
  • A price far above the official figures in the table below.
  • A page that calls itself “the official ticket office” without the museum’s domain.
  • No clear statement of what is included, such as the time slot or the entrance.

Resellers are different. A real reseller tells you it is a reseller. On GetYourGuide, for example, the listing names the operator and says what you get: skip-the-ticket-line entry, an audio guide if you pick that option, and a booking fee. That openness is the difference between a reseller and a scam.

For a deeper walkthrough of the official portal, see my page on the official Vatican ticket site.

Official Vatican Museums Ticket Prices

Official Vatican Museums ticket prices start with a full ticket at EUR 20 without online booking, which is about $22.33 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06. Reduced tickets cost EUR 10, and the “Skip the Line” booking adds EUR 5 to the reduced rate.

The ticket covers the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only on the day it is issued, and tickets cannot be refunded. I always tell friends to read that line twice before paying.

Ticket type Official price (without online booking) Skip the Line booking Approx. USD
Full entry EUR 20.00 See the official page for the online price about $22.33
Reduced entry EUR 10.00 EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $11.17 (or $16.75 with booking)
Students EUR 10.00 EUR 10.00 + 5.00 about $11.17 (or $16.75 with booking)
Schools EUR 5.00 EUR 5.00 + 2.00 about $5.58 (or $7.82 with booking)

Dollar figures use the ECB rate of 1.1165 dollars per euro on 2026-11-06 and are rounded. The official site charges in euros, so your card statement may differ slightly.

Who qualifies for the reduced ticket?

The reduced ticket applies to students up to and including 25 years of age with a document from their school or university confirming enrolment for the current year. If you buy a reduced ticket without entitlement, you must buy a new full-price ticket and the reduced one is cancelled without a refund.

If you are not sure you qualify, buy the full ticket. It is cheaper than being turned away at the gate.

Which Vatican Tickets Are Free?

Free Vatican tickets exist, and it is worth knowing them before you pay any site. The Vatican Museums offer free entry on the last Sunday of the month, for children below the age of 7, and for visitors with a certified disability of at least 67%.

The last-Sunday rule is subject to the museums’ own calendar of openings and closures, so check the official calendar first. On that day the crowds are heavy, so I would not plan a first visit around it unless the price matters more than your time.

Free disability tickets cannot be booked online. They are issued at the “Special Permits” and “Welcome Desk” counters in the entrance hall, with certification, and the visitor and a companion get priority entry.

Papal audiences and Masses

Papal audience tickets for the General Audiences and the Holy Father’s liturgical celebrations are always free of charge. Lay faithful request them through the audience booking page on the Vatican’s own site. If a website asks you to pay for an audience ticket, walk away.

St. Peter’s Basilica

St. Peter’s Basilica entry costs nothing, as one traveler put it:

“Do not miss this place for a FREE location! This is the most beautiful church I've ever been to. Once your through security and the main doors, you are truly hit by the size and artwork. We got there 645am and already there's a line but got in very quickly. If your just there for free visit, you can see most of it in 40mins. Pay extra for the other locations.”
Crimsonpig101 · Google Maps review about Saint Peter’s Basilica

Access is not guaranteed on busy days, because crowd control can limit entry. The GetYourGuide entry listing says the same in its exclusions, noting that the basilica ticket is free but access may vary with crowd control. Paid extras, such as the dome, are separate.

Vatican Entrance Tickets: Official Portal or Reseller?

Vatican entrance tickets are sold by two kinds of seller, and each has a clear job. The official portal sells entry at the museum’s own prices. Resellers sell a time slot or a tour, usually with a meeting point and a small service layer on top.

Here is how I weigh them:

  • Official portal: the lowest price, the museum’s own terms, and no middleman. The downside is that popular slots can sell out, and you handle everything yourself.
  • Reseller entry ticket: a fixed time slot, a dedicated entrance, and often an audio guide. You pay more for the convenience.
  • Guided tour: a licensed guide, a headset and context for the art. It costs the most, and I think it is the best value if you want the history and not just the paintings.

A soft recommendation from me: if the official dates are sold out for your trip, or you want a guide, compare the options below. These are the entry tickets I’d look at first.

What the prices look like

Vatican ticket prices in the listings above are shown in US dollars. The entry ticket from GetYourGuide is rated 4.48 from more than 160,000 reviews. The listing says to go to the Vatican Museum entrance on Viale Vaticano, use the GetYourGuide entrance and scan the ticket at the “Cassa Online e Gruppi” box office after security.

Compare that to the official prices and you see the trade. You pay a premium of a few dollars for a booked slot and a dedicated entrance. For many visitors that is worth it in peak season.

One traveler summed up the value like this:

“value for money. I am glad that I choose this option. really helpful. thank you”

If you are comparing bookings, my page on how to reserve tickets walks through the steps, and the page on choosing a ticket for the Vatican shows what each ticket type includes.

Can You Buy Vatican Tickets at the Door?

Buying Vatican tickets at the door is possible, since the Vatican Museums run a ticket office and the official price page lists a rate for tickets bought without online booking. Expect a queue, and plan your day around it.

One traveler on a late visit described it this way:

“Truly amazing. The photos you see online don’t do the place justice. Just standing in the halls admiring some of Ancient Greek/Ancient Rome/renaissance/baroque masterpieces is beyond words. Definitely worth going too. Getting tickets online is a nightmare, so we turned up at roughly 17:00 and waited for 30/40mims to get tickets. We managed to get round the gallaries before closure, but it was a bit of rush.”
Simmons · Google Maps review about Vatican Museums

That review shows the trade-off. The visitor reached the ticket desk around 5 pm, waited 30 to 40 minutes, and then had to rush through the galleries before closing. Opening hours at the Museums are listed as 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Saturday and closed on Sunday, but confirm them on the official museum site because the last-Sunday opening and holiday closures change the pattern.

If you want to understand the walk-up option in detail, my page on buying tickets on site covers it. I’d only walk up if my schedule is flexible.

A note on the “Cassa Online e Gruppi” desk

The “Cassa Online e Gruppi” desk is where a reseller booking is usually scanned or exchanged, inside the Vatican Museums entrance. Many vouchers send you to the desk called “Cassa Online e Gruppi”, inside the Vatican Museums entrance. It is not the walk-up counter. It is the desk for pre-booked tickets and groups, and it is where the GetYourGuide entry ticket is redeemed after the security check.

Vatican City by the Numbers

Vatican City by the numbers helps explain why there is a ticket system at all. The Vatican is tiny, and most visitors want to see the same few places on the same days.

  • Area: 0.44 km². The compact site means the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s all draw crowds into a very small space.
  • Founded as a state: 1929-02-11, when the Lateran Treaty created the modern city-state. It explains why the Vatican has its own ticketing and rules.
  • Heritage status: World Heritage Site. That is why the collections are protected and visitor numbers are managed.
  • Population: 949 in 2024. Almost every person you meet inside is a visitor.
  • Currency: the euro. The official site charges in euros, so use the ECB rate above for dollar estimates.
  • Official language: Italian and Latin, though the ticket portal is also available in other languages.

Wikipedia describes the Vatican as a landlocked sovereign city-state inside Rome. That is the answer to a question many visitors ask: the Vatican is the state, and the Vatican Museums are one attraction within it.

Which Ticket Seller Should You Choose?

The right ticket seller is the one that matches what you need on the day, not the one with the loudest ad. I use three questions to decide.

Do you want the lowest price? Use the official portal and book early. The base ticket is cheapest there, and the terms come straight from the museum.

Do you want a fixed time and an easy start? A reseller entry ticket gives you a reserved slot and a named meeting point. Read the arrival rule carefully: one listing says to arrive 15 minutes early and that latecomers are not guaranteed entry, and another warns not to arrive outside your assigned time slot.

Do you want to understand what you see? A guided tour is better. Here are the guided and combined options I’d compare:

The Brastours listing is rated 4.59 from more than 11,000 reviews and includes skip-the-line entry for the Museums, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica with a small group. The Habemus Tours option is a guided visit with a licensed guide and priority entry, at a higher price. Both state their meeting points, which differ, so check the address before you leave your hotel.

What reviewers say about reseller tickets

Reseller ticket reviews praise the time saved with skip-the-line entry and say timed access makes the visit easier. They also ask for clearer directions to the correct queue and clearer details on what is included, especially that support often ends at the entrance. That matches my advice: read the inclusions list, and do not assume a guide is included in an entry-only ticket.

One reviewer wrote that they skipped the line with ease:

“We literally skipped the line like we were in the club when we were 20. Slide peasants”

Where Do You Go After You Buy?

After you buy, head to the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano, unless your reseller gives a different meeting point. Reseller tickets often start at an office near the Vatican, and the guide then walks you to the entrance, so read your voucher first.

The map below shows the places you are likely to need on the day.

Meeting points differ by operator. One listing tells you to check in at an office on Via Sebastiano Veniero, another at Via Germanico, another at Via del Mascherino, and a Gray Line option meets in Piazza del Risorgimento. They are all within the same neighborhood, but they are not the same address.

St. Peter’s Basilica has its own hours, listed as 7 am to 7:10 pm every day, and its own queue, so it needs a separate plan from the Museums. Hours can vary on ceremony days, so confirm them on the basilica’s site.

I’d also compare the official and reseller routes for a whole city visit on my page about Vatican City tickets from the official site, and the hub on all Vatican ticket guides lists every ticket page in one place.

Final Checklist Before You Pay

A final checklist before you pay takes a minute: run it anywhere you buy. It takes a minute and it protects you from the most common mistake.

  1. Confirm the domain. The official one is tickets.museivaticani.va.
  2. Compare the price with the official table above. A large gap means a reseller fee or a scam.
  3. Read the inclusions: entry only, audio guide, or guided tour.
  4. Note the time slot and the meeting point, and arrive early.
  5. Remember that official tickets cannot be refunded and are valid only on the day issued.

To sum up the question that started this page: sur quel site peut-on acheter des tickets pour le Vatican? Use the official Vatican Museums portal for the lowest price, and a licensed reseller when you want a booked slot, a guide or a bundle. If you are still deciding, I’d start from my overview of Vatican tickets online and pick the option that fits your day.

Frequently asked questions

How much do tickets for the Vatican cost?

The Vatican Museums list a full ticket at EUR 20, about $22 at the ECB reference rate of 2026-11-06, when bought without online booking. Reduced tickets are EUR 10, and the "Skip the Line" online booking adds EUR 5 to the reduced ticket. Check the official price page before you pay, because rates can change.

Is it possible to visit the Vatican without a reservation?

Yes. The Vatican Museums have a ticket office where you can buy an entry ticket on site, and the official price page lists a rate for tickets bought without online booking. Expect a queue, and plan for it, since one traveler reported waiting 30 to 40 minutes at the ticket desk in the late afternoon.

What is the difference between the Vatican and the Vatican Museums?

The Vatican is a sovereign city-state inside Rome, and the Vatican Museums are one of the sites inside it. The city-state also includes St. Peter's Basilica, the Apostolic Palace and the Vatican Library. You need a separate ticket for the Museums and the Sistine Chapel.

Can I get a refund if I buy the wrong ticket?

On the official site, no. The Vatican Museums state that tickets cannot be refunded, and a ticket is valid only on the day it is issued. Reseller rules differ, so read the cancellation terms on the booking page before you pay.

Are tickets for the Pope's audiences free?

Yes. The Vatican states that tickets for the General Audiences and the Holy Father's liturgical celebrations are always free of charge. You request them through the official audience booking page, never through a paid site.
